A sightseeing train in the town of Takachiho on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu has been using old cooking oil from ramen and rice dishes as a new kind of biofuel. The oil is collected from restaurants and refined with other chemicals to form a non-smoky fuel. The cost of the fuel is said to be almost the same as that of diesel. The idea of the environmentally-friendly fuel first emerged in 2013 and was developed by transportation company Nishida Shoun, in Kyushu’s Fukuoka prefecture.
