Honestly, I've been a voracious reader since I was 9 years old.
The joke about me as child was that if nobody knew where I was, I was likely to be discovered in some obscure corner, nose buried in a book.
My first “serious” books were the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. I snuck-read them late into the night, flashlight under my blankets.
Even before that magnificent discovery, however, I'd been losing myself quite regularly in adventure books for boys.
After Narnia, I moved on to Middle Earth. My passion ignited fiercely under Tolkien's fine tutelage.
I'd often read more than one book at a time —several chapters of my main read every day.
I read probably two or three books a week that way, all the way through high school.
That was just the beginning of my reading life.
I've read thousands of books. Good books, great books, cheap books, trashy books, mediocre books.
I couldn't even begin to make a list of them all.

A book must captivate in the first 30 - 40 so pages : over several decades of reading it is these literary gems that have done that for me. Life is too short for reading crappy and long winded books. Any book lover knows the feeling, you finish a book and turn it around in your hands, half expecting the wonderful characters in it to fall out, so alive are they in your sub-conscious, obviously they don't and whilst you are pained that the experience is over you just want to get the message out there to all and sundry : you must read this book !
I have purposely avoided the well-known books eg "the Millennium Series" + Ken Follett's Knightbridge trilogy and stuck to books that are (mostly) out of the mainstream best sellers list.
"Chiefs" by Stuart Woods. Three consecutive town marshals in the Deep South struggle to find the serial killer in their rural community.
"The Wardens" by Clark Howard. The riveting tale of a dynasty of chief prison wardens in charge of dangerous inmates.
"Brothers" by Bernice Rubens. The author follows the lives of generations of Jews from Tsarist Russia to the gulags of Stalin. A Hebrew school teacher got this book listed in the school’s required reading curriculum after he picked up my recommendation from Amazon.com.

"When the Lion Feeds" by Wilbur Smith. Prolific author of adventurous novels. First book in his best trilogy …. 2nd book "Sound of Thunder" and 3rd one "When Sparrows Fall"
"Dirty White Boys" by Stephen Hunter. Violent inmates escape from their penitentiary and go on a killing rampage followed by a detective burdened by his own secrets and guilt.
"The Extra Man" by Andrew Rosenthal. The Korean War ends and a veteran's buddy comes to stay awhile with him and his wife with devastating results.
"Class Reunx" by Rona Jaffe. Jaffe vows the readers i n her story of the lives of students after college and their class reunx where the balancing scales of their lives reveal their successes and failures.
"The Journeyer" by Gary Jennings. Captivating and long narrative of the journeys of Marco Polo along the silk road to China and the years he spent there. . "Aztec" (same author) covers the fascinating tale of that S American culture. Epic literary works.

"The Girl Next Door" by Jack Ketchum. The master Stephen King could not have penned a book of such horror . Apparently is based on true events which makes it even more horrifying..

"The Sergeant" by Dennis Murphy. A sergeant at an army base becomes obsessed with a new recruit.
“The Seven Minutes” by Irving Wallace. An ivy league student is indicted for rape and his lawyers accuses a book titled The Seven Minutes for inciting him to commit the act. An investigative journalist goes in search of the book’s author and its origins.

The single best book I’ve read is “This Hallowed Ground” by Bruce Catton. It is everything a narrative history should be: factual, well structured, clear, and fun to read several times with brilliant turns of phrasing.
Anyone interested in history should read it at least once in their lifetime.
In fact, I think I’ll read it again this year.

Anyone interested in history should read it at least once in their lifetime.

This is an impossible question to answer. There have been thousands, perhaps millions of books written, and I’ve read a few thousand at most. Recently I came across a book called “The Story of a Stanley Steamer” that was being discarded by my library. It was written in 1950. Because I’m a big fan of the Stanley Steamer, I plucked it from the refuse pile and took it home. It was the story of a man who restored a Stanley in 1950. The writing is riveting. The point I am trying to make is that there are so many books that are excellent that will never, ever be read just because, and as time goes by, more and more of them will be forgotten, no matter how good they are. We try to set aside what someone thinks is “great writing” by elevating the books with things like the Pulitzer Prize or the Booker Award, but writing is so subjective that it’s no guarantee they are good books. There are some real gems - on the Pulitzer list.
The question should read, what are the best books I’ve ever read, because that I can comment on with some authority.

The best book I have ever read is “The Caine Mutiny” by Herman Wouk. It’s a long, involved book about a minesweeper lost in the Pacific during WW2. It won the Pulitzer; it was made into a movie and won the “Best Picture” Oscar; it was made into a play and won whatever the top award is for that. Another book that came out not long after was “The Flight of the Phoenix” by Elliston Trevor, a marvelously written book that puts you into the desert with those men dying of thirst while they struggle to repair their downed aircraft so they can escape. “Catch-22” by Joseph Heller just gets better with every reading, it is intelligent, funny, heartbreaking and the only book that ever made me laugh and cry at the same time, the heartbreaking story of men fighting WW2 in the air and the crazy things they have to do to survive. The best book I’ve read in the last 20 years is “Cutting for Stone” by Abraham Verghese. I cried for the last 100 pages and I rarely, if ever, cry. It is astounding in it’s rich detail and timeless story of love and betrayal and redemption and sacrifice. There are other marvelous books - many of the “Horatio Hornblower” books by CS Forester are incredibly well written - but Hornblower is such an unlikable anti-hero that he never really caught on so much. Even the A&E series made about him had to change the character into a likable one. Forrester made a huge mistake when he made Hornblower so, no only unlikable but dis-likable. No one wants a hero they can’t relate to. I’ve read the entire series three times. The most relentlessly exciting book I have ever read is “True Crime” by the distasteful author Andre Klavan, and it’s no longer in print. You can’t even get it anymore. There are lots of authors who have written incredible - and I mean incredible books that will never be read, such as “Suspects” by William J. Caunitz, who wrote a series of exciting, richly detailed police stories in the 1980s and 90s. Who has even heard of him? I’ve read “Suspects” over a dozen times. Or anything by Donald E. Westlake. There are so many good books- “All the Light We Cannot See”, “The Book of Air and Shadows”, “Beat the Reaper”, “Hearts in Atlantis” (Steven King’s best book) and so, so many others. There’s no way to determine the “Best book ever written”. How would I know? How would you know? Who could prove it?

I’m not much of a reader actually, and having read in total 10 books (I suppose) I really should not be answering this question. But recently I did find one book, which changed my life and plunged into the desert, having me searching for more and more books to fill my never ending satiety to read.
Chaos by james Gleick found me somehow and I instatntly became an addict. It showed me a world, not too far away from me, infact within my very reach and allowed me to interpret my surroundings in new ways. Every page asked new and strange questions. Every line begged me to think and reassess everything around me.
It was an absolutly unusual combination of delight, pleasure and astonishment, a feeling I had not felt for very long! For the first time reading a book was not just reading but a trip to another land altogether.
It’s certainly not the answer to your question but the experience was worth mentioning..

But anyways, I have read quite a few books, but now I am going to tell about the last book I read (or listened to on Storytel). And since, as per this question, that is the best for me now.
“I CAME UPON A LIGHT HOUSE” BY SHANTANU NAIDU.
Do you want to know about the 28 year old Shantanu Naidu? Perhaps you have heard or read about his journey from starting Motopaws and making shiny reflective collars for dogs to working with Mr. Ratan Tata!
But, we don’t know the story in detail. We don’t know much about Mr. Tata beyond his industrial image!
Mr. Naidu has taken us on an excursion with Mr. Tata through his book!
Trust me, you will know so much more about Mr. Tata. How love for dogs united them, how they get along with each other, how they spend their time, and how much you get to learn from both of them in this book.

Since I have listened to the audiobook, the narrator, Jehan Dhalla, has done an outstanding job too! The way he changed his voice from becoming Mr. Naidu in one second to Mr. Tata in another, is truly laudable.
There is humor, emotion, lessons, adorableness throughout! It almost feels like the narrator is talking to you. And, few chapters as I said it’s funny, can make you laugh or chuckle!
A very beautiful thought I caught from Mr. Naidu. He says he likes to share everything that made him smile with people so that he can make them smile too. He wants to make them meet Mr. Tata through him! He has so adorably described the humbleness, kindness and compassion of Mr. Tata, that you definitely do not want to miss out on it.
You ask me, WHY?
I have reasoned already why to read it. But I also want to emphasize one more point. We spend hours watching movies or series. If one does not like to read, they can avail this option of audiobook! Why not invest some time in also knowing about Mr. Tata who has done so much for our country? Besides, I am sure, you will enjoy this book :)
