What secrets does Thailand have that they don't want to let foreigners know?

I was teaching there for a year and half. To say that they are the friendliest people is only the tourists’ perception, since they are paying customers and of course treated nicely for money.
I don’t want to be disrespectful, but honest, and the truth is the students are the laziest I have ever met (also taught in China, Taiwan and Vietnam). 90 per cent were not interested in learning at all, only thing they did diligently was pray in front of the Buddha statue in the morning.
Also, I lived in three places and every time my rental deposit was never returned with all kinds of excuses. I better to stop here before I get flagged, there are always people who get offended when earnestly telling about my own experiences.
Naturally there are all kinds of people in every countries, but especially China and Vietnam were very different than Thailand.

Yeah very easy for them to lie to your face. Very easy to gaslight and pretend they give back change. I would never give a server money to go to the bar etc again. It’s not much on conversion but just makes me rage when people blatantly lie to my face and pretend they gave me change or didn’t serve me at all
I’m Thai, and I agree. We are very lazy. I think it comes from the fact that we’ve never really had any thing disastrous or truly terrible happen. Complacency of sorts.

I have lived in Thailand for over 19 years, spent one third of the three years before that working in Thailand, and worked with them on and off since 1992. I worked in a school where one of my students was the son of a Supreme Court Justice - one of the best students I ever had when I was teaching in a public, albeit prestigious, school. I taught the children of Members of Parliament at that same school where I worked for my first four years living in Thailand. The classes were divided into groups based on their past academic accomplishment in years 7–9: classes 1–3, 4–6, and 7–9. 1–3 were exceptional students that did very well, 4–6 were mediocre, 7–8 was horrible, and 9 was a mixed bag where some were horrible students of the last group, and some just were caught in there because of late registration. Most of the poor students were not allowed to come back for years 10–12, and they were all decent students. After those 4 years, I had a position in the Faculty of Science at a university in Bangkok. I cannot say anything bad about any of the students I worked with there. One works with me now (not directly) at the National Science Museum, where she has excelled.

Most foreign teachers, in my experience, that have come to Thailand spend a year or two just to make money to drink it away at the bars. What kind of comments would you expect from such people? Most foreigners staying in Thailand make no attempt to speak the language, yet alone read or write it. “Too difficult” they say. Well, if you find Thai difficult, imagine how Thais think about a language that you could fill an encyclopedia set worth of exceptions to rules, and where there are no set rules for pronunciation. English is truly one of the worst languages in the world when it comes to any kind of logic.

Yes, I understand that it comes from a mixed group of languages, and strange spellings and grammar rules have resulted from it. It does not make it any more logical. I have learned 6 languages in my life, and I understand how difficult English is for the Thais. If you think teaching English is difficult for the Thais, imagine German, which most English speakers have massive problems with when it comes to grammar. The high school German students that I have had in the past were wonderful, but it was an elective, so nearly every student wanted to be there and learn it. English, on the other hand, is a required subject, that many students have no desire to learn and see no use for while they are in school.

I have had no problem whatsoever over my 31 years working with Thais and 19 years living in Thailand. I have found it much more pleasant than living in the United States. When you speak, read, and write the language, and understand the culture, as a foreigner, you often find yourself treated better than the Thais will treat each other.
That’s what I also heard from a friend of mine who went to teach at one of the international schools where there were lots of spoiled kids attending.

Another friend went to teach at Triam Udon high school which is known to be one of top-uni feeder schools. He had a whole different experience with kids paying great attention. He said he needed to work extra hard as he could be challenged easily by the students if not well prepared.

I worked in Thailand for 3 years, working there is fine when you are in charged. Upon retirement, I chose Thailand and that is a big mistake. A Thai friend was ask to translate with my landlord, guess whose side he chose. Should have gone to Manila instead, the Filipinos are more sincere.
One of the highest murder rates in asia, infantacide is rife, HIV stats are grossly under reported, corruption is rife , crime is off the scale with 350,000 in jail at any one time. Scamming tourists is an acceptable part of life , banks can not be trusted with your cash. Driving licences are given after one lesson and test on same day, 35,000 road deaths daily per year. Health and safety is non existant , i could go on and on and on.
