You are absolutely right about getting ripped off in the west. I went to a small hospital in Lianjiang, Fujian China a couple months ago for gastro type tests. Went in at 8:30am, they took my blood pressure, an ultrasound on my abdomen, blood test, upper GI with the camera (while I was awake) and an electrocardiogram. All the results went to the doctor, he told me what I needed to do, and what not to do. He prescribed some medication, and I picked it up right down the hall from his office. I was out by 12:30am. Total cost? $275.00 US. That would have cost thousands of dollars in the US.

Here in the US the secretary for my mom’s heart doctor told me she will call me within a few weeks to set up a date for my mom’s surgery to have a blood clot device to be placed in her heart to catch blood clots that pass through my mom’s heart. Well, I have waited about 5 months now and the secretary hasn’t called me yet! I called her two weeks ago to ask her why she hasn’t called me yet to set up an appointment for my mom’s surgery and she told me she will call me back in about a month or so! By this rate my mom could wait a year or more to have a procedure done for her heart! A procedure her heart doctor said is vital for her to get done because the next blood clot in her heart could be the end of her! That is the kind of tragedy that is happening in a country that calls itself, “The richest and most powerful country in the world!”

@dadonweIfare? Many variables go into the measure of life expectancy. I argue that life expectancy is attributed more to lifestyle and diet. Americans have one of the worst diets in the world. Of course, health care has a huge effect on life expectancy as well. I am not saying the USA has the best healthcare system. It doesn′t. My gripe is with how people quote universal healthcare as "free" and the best system that every country should adopt. Citizens of Japan and Korea also have to pay 20-30% of their medical bills plus a tax from their paychecks every month. The same for Singapore. They are mandated to pay a certain percentage through insurance.
The point I′m trying to make is that free healthcare does not exist. You are forced to pay it out of your wages. Which is distributed terribly because the government is involved.
I don′t know what the best system is but I have personal issues with the government managing my healthcare. It′s a monetary and moral issue that people have different opinions on. All that being said, I am grateful for having the peace of mind that I can go to the hospital and be served when I need it.

Good to see you back in China with good spirit! The tradition of not having the ashes in a home is not necessarily a Chinese superstition. It is local as different villages different town carry different traditions. Just like the number “4”, folks of some regions don’t like the number because it sounds like death, but some area of China like the number “4” because it sounds like happiness in their dialect. After all, China is a multiethnic country. It is the rich culture that makes China interesting and lovable to explore and live.

Good luck on your property settlement. I myself did some research recently regarding Chinese law. In your case, the property should be shared between spouse, any children, and her parents. You don't have any kids together; that is not an issue. I guess you are the only survivor, and as long as you have legal marriage document, it should be straight forward. If there is a will, the will will take precedence. I guess in your case, either way will result in the same outcome. Once the court grant you the whole property rights, you will also need to go to the local registration agency to officially change the title to your name only. Sometimes, the court will ask you to prove that her parents are all deceased (you might need to get their death certificates as well). The Chinese system can get complicated because the children and parents have the rights, not like the western world, where the spouse is usually the only person entitled to the property.

Regarding assets of the deceased, probate is always as pain in the butt. The probate process in China is actually a lot easier in the East, including China, than in Western countries.

Glad that you are back in Nanning, China. you should have learned some Mandarin during your 20 years there. Easier to learn when you are younger. I hope you can pick up the important words quickly. Too many expats living in China fail to learn the language because they were relying on their partner. Some on my friends however did learn Mandarin and speak it quite well now. Chinese idiom “好好学习天天向上。”study hard and every day you will improve. All the best to you.
