Russia is the nation equivalent of that. Do they have some elite forces? Yep. Do they have some interesting hardware? Yep. But on the whole, they’re not a badass nation, they are not the world power they carry themselves as being. They are mostly out of shape and don’t have the first clue when it comes to modern military strategy. They have to threaten with nukes all the time because in a conventional war with the west, they don’t have a prayer in hell. It would be a quick one sided defeat of the ages. Because it’s not enough to have some nice hardware and elite soldiers, you have to know how to use them, and Russia simply doesn’t. Like Meal Team 6 with their military hardware, they’re simply no match for those who do.

The “elite” Russian forces — spetsnaz, paratroops, naval infantry, and “guards” units are no more. They have literally been devastated. Overhead photography of assembly areas shows that these units have lost 40–60% of their personnel and have filled out the hole with untrained conscxts. This is called “force dilution” and means that the units are ”elite” in name only. These days they are far less than fearsome.
