Protectionism isn’t the only thing though..ironically for the likes of xiaomi, it’s actually insufficient production capacity..they only got 200-300k/yr production capacity this yr but they are expanding 3X to meet insatiable demand in China and other upcoming models..they probably need to 10X capacity to meet large overseas markets like the US

Apart from the fact that Europe wants to charge almost 40% taxes for any Chinese imported vehicle, which makes it almost impossible for them to find a market here.

@durlacher1826 I agree that it’s not that easy flooding the US market, it could take years to gain trust, except the price is reasonable, we all know it’s not going to happen because of the 100% tariffs. but the Europe part is not true, check Norway as one example,and the European EV can’t even compete with Chinese EV, that’s why some countries put tariffs 100% on it. Protectionism will weaken the competitiveness of the American auto industry, something we already experienced during the late Qing Dynasty. One of the benefits of a nation with a long history is the ability to draw lessons from past experiences, clearly Trump has no idea

Tesla has been losing sales in Europe and the USA - mostly due to Musk's off the rails political activism... but they're losing sales in China too, and there it's due to domestic competition that is making some cars comparable to Tesla for half the price.... and, they look they will pull away from Tesla in mechanical refinement, tech and features before long. Near term - next few years, I don't know where Tesla's sales will come from. If it weren't for American protectionism, the Chinese EVs might wipe ALL the competition out.

I did with model 3 performance after about 10mins of hard driving overheating begins battery gets hot and drops the power output brakes become very soft. All the other cars around me I was driving with including a 3 cylinder gr corolla left me in the dust because car had to cool down. Speaking of comfort and luxury I daily drive a 2022 bmw 5 series the comfort/build quality leaves all the evs especially the Chinese ones behind. The only trend i see with new cars especially ev it to shove as much ipads and tech into the car as possible. Thats not luxary look at Rolls Royce they prioritize quality over tech thats why their cars barley fall in value and are very respected.
