@praks07
If they found a loophole and the import was legal. It's the government's fault for trying to impose retroactive taxes for loopholes it left in It's laws.

@hengzi-cartoon
Introduce new retrospective tax laws, claim that all foreign companies are tax evaders, confiscate all their assets, and drive them out of India.
India cannot be colonized by foreign companies anymore.

@sparshmaheshwari4523
And it is for a reason. Government wants car manufacturers to assemble in India if they will be selling jn India, and its good only to generate employment. Stop mindlessly attacking government for taxes.

@2531Prasad
Sorry to say but I'm on VW side here .
I wanted to start a company which builds custom mini-PC's . The Import duties and taxes make my Manufacturing Cost higher than someone from Chinas Landed Cost.
Only thing I can do is move out of India so I can make a competitive Product

@banestock
There's a reason this country is a banana republic.. The only ppl who make it big are corrupt politician and ppl who deal in black money! The hard working citizen is the bakhra... We need to start holding accountable these scum bag politician and not be dumb sheep taking what ever they throw at us.. Tell me which politician is poor or Middle class?

@nilsocket
Indian government can do this if they have proper infrastructure here.
Without proper infrastructure for manufacturing they can't expect companies to do their part of building infrastructure.

@nilsocket
I'm not saying these companies should be above the law or something.
All I'm saying is, it's morally not correct to force/ make rules which are too much skewed towards one side, forcing global companies to manufacture in india, when proper manufacturing infrastructure is not available.
If manufacturing infrastructure is available, then you can say to global companies to source locally and keep high taxes for imported parts.
It doesn't make any sense for vw/skoda group to manufacture Kodiaq, superb, ... in india, as it takes too much effort with complete loss for such low selling cars numbers due to advanced tech and premium materials required.

@yatheeshchandra718
Such high taxes are charged so that you source the components locally. It'll take a few years for the local manufacturing power to reach international standards. Let's do our part in moving the nation forward instead of cursing it for our shortcomings.

@SmitePlayz1
Indian want money, german want money. Indian give bad value, German give good value. I buy German. I happy.
Half of the price you pay to buy a car longer than 4 metres goes to the government. All that tax but still sub-par services. What is the point of keeping money in the country's economy then?

@TJSaw
As an Indian, I hope VW wins this case against the Indian government. I’m sick of being taxed to death.

@SamyakMittal-
No, these foreign companies should be heavily taxed in order to promote Indian companies and taxes on the commoners should reduce. Its a good thing

@anirudhkhandal
It is impossible to do business in India for foreign car makers. An equivalent car from toyota, honda, hyundai or volkswagen is double the cost than tata, suzuki and mahindra.
This is also the reason why car makers like Chevrolet have left india

@anirudhkhandal
we don't get good quality of cars. All we get are cosmetic upgrades. German and Japanese engines are way superior in performance than Indian engines. Until we are able to manufacture such technology, we should have affordable access to the foreign technology. If you drive a volkswagen or toyota for over 50k km you will never drive a suzuki, tata, mahindra or hyundai

@shashisubramaniam3630
I wish the government showed the same enthusiasm and zeal in matters like accountability of Municipal Corporation & their staff for the kind of pathetic services and facilities they provide us, an administration which cannot provide basic drinking water to it's citizens should fix their own problems first before penalizing people and companies with tax burdens.

@Apache1970
I am glad most Indians are on the side of Volkswagen rather than Indian government. That itself says a lot on who is in the wrong

@halo7250
And you are wondering why FDI is decreasing… India.. Graveyard of MNCs

@nileshb354
Govt. Should really give a thought on this. Because if companies will leave India they will not gonna come back + Lot of people will loose employment + interested upcoming foreign investors will also go back. So some middle point should be considered by both. But if VW is doing it since 2011 n Govt. Know this practice then I am on VW side.

@MayankShekhar
I believe there is a reason why this being done now if this true that VW group has been importing like this since 2011. VW group has started making decent sales in India, the cars have features, quality and above all Safety. People are now more aware about these awesome vehicles than they were before. This has upset some safe for India car makers and they are trying to control the market. If VW group loses and decides to exit india will the govt take responsibility of the thousands of cars that will not get official service and it will be the people of India who will be at loss.

@Aryavart-h3c
Government does dacoity with automobile makers. One of the reason why cars are so expensive in india. With this kind of attitude you can't turn into a manufacturing hub. Taxes in automobile are exorbitantly high. The government is trying to fill their coffers so that they use that money to finance their appeasement schemes and freebies

I agree that the tax situation in India is not ideal, but VW is run by crappy management in last few years, and it's not hard to believe that they may have tried these things to evade tax.

@yeskay7
Dear Customs, You should investigate VW the same way you investigate the Adanis and Ambanis or any politicians or government officials! Psst...! Start with yourself!

@testingcsr
Government is trying to make in India rather than Make abroad and assemble in India, every Indian should support local manufacturing

@SaikatSaha-yk1yq
Seems like Comment section cant appreciate Government at all.
Government did this to boost Indian Cars Dominance in our Market.
Keep the Good and Complain why we cant build Car Companies like BYD and xiaomi

@ranadeepjash1150
Tax is the answer. This kind of tax only send negative investment signal around the world. Some babu dose not got their money that's why they are creating this kind of fasad. This kind of tax terrorism will any manufacturing ambition of government.

@Rocky_4477
The comment section shows how stupid general indian public is siding with a foreign company committing tax fraud but complaining about corrupted government lMao

@eriktenhag2022
I can understand high import taxes 50 or 60 years ago when there weren't really any indigenous manufacturers in the market.
That is not the case now, there are many indigenous players, some of whom (esp. Mahindra) have the technical knowhow to make world class products and even export them to developed markets. Mahindra vehicles are well received in countries like Australia, as a reliable brand offering options for customers on a budget.
So if the Indian government still places high import duties on foreign automobiles, that means the govt. itself does not have confidence in the indigenous companies ability to survive in a more competitive market.
This is nothing but bad optics for the government.

@GPS2604
Bureaucrats are kicking Investors out. Tax authority in India is a well known extortionist. Shameful.

@rbpx1809
So, what's the problem here? VW is importing it in unassembled and the assembly is done by Indian engineers and mechanics right? Is the problem here just being govt not getting taxes by a foreign company? This is why we have no proper competition and getting low quality vehicles.

@tgunasekhar
Another MNC falls for tax terrorism of India. The tax men who raise these disputes will have no consequences, enjoy all the benefits & perks while the company has to face the board of directors, stock price falling down and harassment from the govt. Ultimately they will leave the country leaving thousands jobless. 70% of all tax litigations are squashed by Supreme Court. Still we have no frxwork to make the tax men accountable for these false tax disputes.

@yusufayaz2356
This is the reason why Indian automotive market is so depressing. As it is they launch below par cars in India bcoz of heavy taxation. These lunatics would force foreign car manufacturers to leave one by one.

@arvindkumarsingh3035
I am also with VW here. Very difficult to do business. India will attract even less MNC now. These are manufacturing companies that create a lot jobs but hey who cares as bhakt will rejoice this move

@tarun1587
If Volkswagen evaded the tax then penalty should be imposed, we will see what the court decides. But if Volkswagen is not found guilty than Indian Govt. shall be penalised by the court.

@vishalhegde5238
Idk how is it possible govt never a chance to loot all our money through taxes. Taking sooo much of money from goods, services, capital gains, income ,securities transactions, custom duty, stamp duty, road tax and then cess etc
But still it govts run out of funds for development of infrastructures and public services, even public transportation prices are increasing
Where does so much money go

@shreyshah9266
Even if they did a play, I support it, As a skoda owner I cannot think of a locally built skoda being the same, actually the new locally built cars are actually crappier compared to the ckd prodcuts. This is the same as Bmw making cars in the Usa as germany, the ones made in usa are far worse than German made.

@masuttta
Eventually this tax will by passed onto the consumer.
I am on VW's side. excessive greed of the Govt, is pushing quality down the drain and promoting mediocre products.
And also, this strategy is well know by the Govt. Consumers like me knew it and pretty well evident the authorities knew it as well too.

@niteshtak12
Any growth oriented government with half a brain would think of aligning with international standards and making the environment conducive for businesses. But here we are, seeing every bit of effort towards providing unfairly advantageous playing field to the domestic players, no matter how screwed the end consumer gets by having to put up with sub standard vehicles.

@AshimRoy-t7p
Finance ministry want only tata and mahindra to survive in india. At the same time they want foreign investment in India, that too 100% locally manufactiring. how can someone invest billions suddenly without testing their car. and still when they do a mix up of locally product + import then they sue. this would scare away foreign brands like Ford, Chevrolate.

@thodarundhupayanam5423
On a flip side, if any Indian car maker had been sued by the German govt, on the same issue Germans would have supported their govt. rather than siding with the car mfg. In india its exactly opposite...I am not justifying what the govt did, but it feels kinda weird. If rest of the car makers source parts locally, why can't VW?

@avienxyz
first they tax the automaker and automaker pushes the cost to consumer and then again the taxpayer pays his share of tax, by the time the car reaches end consumer cost is risen by 250% no wonder investors and consumers both are fed up.

@rajanc8718
Btw VW is right and have one of the best quality. This tax system has majorly affected the quality of the car nowadays. It's a embarrassing situation where people choose cheaper class of vehicle made by Maruti Suzuki despite of other brands like VW and Toyota.

@ibanker
VW should win this case. The Govt has been heavy handed with taxes, making them unaffordable in India, because of heavy taxation. They could have increased road tax and improved the roads instead. No, they wanted to milk an MNC instead, which could have brought better quality for the price being paid.
