A plan to reshore automotive manufacturing by imposing tariffs will take years and require billions of dollars in investment. In the meantime consumers could see higher prices, and fewer choices. CNBC breaks down which vehicles are likely most affected and how much prices are likely to rise.

America has an education problem. A lot of people are voting and they have no clue how government even works much less of a complex issue like the economy. They go based off feelings and that’s why politicians take them to town all day, everyday

what did people imagine would happen, lol. even if US-made cars' prices aren't affected (let's assume 100% of the parts are US made), they would see it as an opportunity to raise their prices.

@imogenharrison3432
Imagine this. You are an American business owner who's product is slightly cheaper than a foreign product of similar quality. Suddenly your competitors product cost rises by 25%. Do you sit at a lower cost thinking about all your lovely customers, or do you raise your prices more in line with your foreign competitor to make more profit..
You see if you think they won't raise their prices, you are ignoring the very fundamentals that drives capitalism, profit. Tariffs drive inflation, and it comes from many directions.

@CoretteLecuyeer
Tariffs will raise the price of components and completed commodities utilized in US manufacturing. Inflation will rise sharply and immediately as a result. The Fed will have to raise interest rates in order to combat inflation, which will benefit billionaires but may deprive the middle class. Because inflation is so severe, people are actually taking out loans to pay for necessities. Yes, the collapse has started.

@johnnyyuen809
Remember how he tariffed Samsung washers in 2018? The prices of dryers also went up, even though they weren't tariffed. Then the prices of American washers went up for no reason. The tariff was ended in 2023 but the prices didn't go down: price for a washer and dryer combo today is $1200+.

@ericmccormick82
The economy is struggling with uncertainties, global fluctuations, and the lingering effects of the tariffs, leading to instability. Rising inflation, slow growth, and trade disruptions require immediate action from all sectors to restore stability and promote growth.

people wanted higher prices. That's why they voted for tariffs. All very clear before the election. People wanted to pay more for most common goods in order to finance tax cuts for the wealthy. Will of the people really

The Art of the Deal: We’ll make more cars here. They’ll still be of worse quality than the cars we get overseas, but they’ll be more expensive. Brilliant.

@christopherconcept926
Trump said he doesn’t care if auto makers increase prices. Do you think he cares about the average American? He thinks running the country is like a business. Diplomacy and globalization are not the same as run a bankrupt company. Countries are not as dependent on the US as he thinks. Yes, you’ll have the factories here and the jobs here but who is going to buy the cars?

@AlGreenLightThroughGlass
The idea of a tariff tax is to eliminate competition and protect higher prices. Innovation is out the door - welcome to the Soviet unx.

@alanhall6909
Tariffs are a tax on consumers, meaning the poor and middle class. To the extent that American manufacturers benefit, that will benefit the corporations and their rich owners. If manufacturing increases in the US, it will be highly automated. I doubt Trump's supporters would have approved if he had been truthful and said that the price of beer and pickup trucks would rise dramatically.

A 25k cars made in Mexico is going to cost 50-60k$ if made in the USA...this is going to make it impossible for the population to buy cars

@kevinoohhhh
A majority of the country decided they fully trusted Trumps understanding of economics despite his total stupidity of it, and they are going to FULLY pay for that as the standard of living CRATERS, expedited by these tariffs. Godspeed you asked for it.

@Ohio-sy7mh
Tariffs are used to shift taxes from the rich to the poor and middle class. The rich person doesn't mind paying an extra $10k for a car if his taxes are lowered by $1 million. The middle-class person must pay the extra $10k too, but gets no tax break.

@diamondlion47
Car loan default rates are already through the roof and every CEO is saying that the consumers are stretched and cutting back. This will end tragically for the US auto industry, and no, not even Tesla will be immune.

@zjunlimited
Just visited my local Audi dealership and as of Sunday, Mar 30, they had a $15,000 “market adjustment” added as of last Friday but is described as due to tariffs. Additionally they said after April 1 all vehicle prices would increase 10-15%. I said good luck and left. Beware, they are preying on the misinformed and desperate.

@humanbeing5300
Unfortunatley American cars are junk, so this tariff essentially tries to force consumers to buy American. It would be one thing if the quality was equal but its not.

@Unreasonable1756
This already happened in 2018 with Chinese washing machines! The tarriffed washing machines jumped up in price and the American made washing machines with no tariffs simply raised their prices to match. It's beyond stupid

@angry-zombie
Because of the high labour cost, even if cars are made in USA they wont be able to export them. They will never be competitive.

Bought a new car at the end of 2023 for a little over $19,000, God was smiling down on me. Now, I owe less than $9,000 and my payments are a little over$200/month, less than my insurance payment, go figure. I don't make much money, but my car note is my only real debt. And, yes, I still voted for Harris.

@lpdude2005
Tariffs were probably exactly what led to the great American depression in 1930 - now they will repeat the move again. They don't know how the world works, where goods and materials are produced or anything else for that matter. Total incompetence. A car from Europe with tariffs and a US-made car will have the same additional price - the American population will have to pay between $7,500 - 10,000 for any mid-range car. Cars are already expensive in the US -

@StevenChen-w6p
Tariff and other things aside, I'm shocked how avg car transaction price is at $48K. Ain't no wonder a lot of people loses their home very quickly when they're unemployed for a while. Can't people just buy more simple cars, its primary function is going from point A to point B, how fancy do cars have to be for average people? It's not a transformer that can do way more, stop paying for features that aren't truly needed.

Buy new and drive for about 7-8 years, trade in for another new low end vehicle, very simple. Saves time and money on possible repair. Most cars don't need any repair in their first 7 years other than simple maintenance, saved a lot of headache, and holds like 20%-25% of value in trade-in. then get back in to a brand new car for the same cycle, very good financial move for most people. I would say that the only rare exceptions are those who can do repairs themselves. This doesn't include millions who think they can do repair, there are those who can, and there are those who think they can. Of those who buy used cars, there are more people crying about how bad it turned out than those who is able to buy good ones and/or do repair themselves to make it into a sweet deal. buying used car is like financial literally and job market, the ones that get it good are the extreme minority.

@BrianHSC
Some people get the wrong impression that "oh well, we'll just make it here". The reason why manufacturing left US is still here. NOTHING has been done to address that. High labor, poor workmanship, and then there's UAW. And the tariff will NOT lower the cost of domestic goods. It just forces us to buy domestic goods which is STILL, high labor and poor workmanship. Bringing Hyundai here will not change "high labor and poor workmanship"

@soeun2687
jumped on the cryptocurrency bandwagon just because Trump supported it. I started with $30k, and in just four months, I've made almost $270k. Since Bitcoin and XRP are the most secure investments, I'm alternating between them to secure earnings. I'm glad I stuck to my gut. In actuality, this is the biggest wealth transfer in history.

@jasondrummond9451
Even as simple a component as a piston for an engine can cross the U.S. Canada border several times in the process of going from a lump of metal to a piston ground to tolerances for a specific engine, and installed in same. Add 25% tariffs on each border crossing, and the price of a piston becomes insane. Do that for EVERY component of an engine, and a car and you shut down the industry. Move it all to America? Difficult, and if you succeed you can kiss your export market goodbye.

@Mike504
My entire life I wanted a nice pickup truck. When I got my first full time job they were about $25k and it was just out of comfortable grasp. And as I made more money they kept being just out of grasp. Now I have things lined up and will get one in a month and I told my wife if these terrifs screw that up she will see a hissy fit like never seen before.

@Mike-r1j5e
After Americans pay more for automobiles, there will less money to spend for day to day living expenses eg. high priced groceries, rent, healthcare insurance premiums etc. To gain a few auto manufacturing jobs at the detriment of the entire US general population.

@colinherbertson
So when the manufacturers bring their factories back to the US, will they bring the equivalent of a Chinese or Mexican wage to the American workers in the new factories? After all, they left in the first place because of the cost of local wages. Something does not add up except that car prices will skyrocket and buyer demand will drop

@user-fed-yum
Someone said this is what happens when you have a criminal in charge, who instead should be in jail.

@seanleaverton8125
The news says so, so it must be true. Tariffs will have a negative affect yes but dealerships can't raise the prices because vehicles already cost way to much, and cars are sitting on lots for 300 plus days, fear mongering at its best.

More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

@Emphasis213
What most Americans dont realize is that it will be more and more robots taking your jobs when manufacturing moves back to the US. the upside is it will be manufactured in the US at a lower price. But even then many wont have a job to buy those vehicles made by American robots that are likely built elsewhere with foreign components. The few American car builders that donhave jobs will be maintaining thise robots being told on how to do it by skilled green card holders.

@happyhippo5488
It harms almost everyone. There is only one car company that produces entirely in the USA and that is Tesla. The only ones who benefit from these tariffs are the owners of Tesla shares.

@feranicignis1112
The reason parts are made outside of america is because it is cheaper to do so. Making them within america will be more expensive unless the cost of american labour is reduced or company taxes are reduced. Either option results in less money for the american people or government unless prices increase, in which case things are more expensive for the american people.

Just had a buddy who had to resign his full time job because of a $5k car repair…. He didn’t have it. Got a cheaper estimate of $4100, still didnt have it. His boss wrote him up for missing 3 days. He put in his immediate resignation

@Twyscape
Best thing I did was buy a car outright with 19k miles on it about 5 years ago. My plan is to keep it going for 15-20 years with regular servicing. All that money I’m saving in car payments is now being used to buy the stock market dips. Only the poor fools or the wealthy buy new cars now. Go save up some money and buy a used car. Your wallet will thank you.

@appydaysquilts

I purchased 2 cars last year when trump won the election. Looks like a great decision now. Im retired & I should not have to buy another car for the rest of my life. As long as the trump insanity persists, I will absolutely not buy anything that I don’t need.
FAFO is a real thing for the people that voted for trump. Everything just got a whole lot more expensive for you, your investment are tanking, and, oh yeah, Manufacturing is NOT moving back to the US.

@MyDailyVlog2025
The companies can afford the loss since they are worth billions of dollars. The consumer can’t afford the rising cost so companies would have to adjust the losses if they want to stay in business. The rich will always be greedy, that is why they went to other countries to save money and we the people lose money .

@hudsonfrank1121
I was wondering about insurance for your vehicles as well. Insurance rates are already high to begin with and now tariffs jacking up the prices of vehicles. This will affect your insurance as well. Just keep that in mind with this ripple effect. You may want to reconsider the next time you go "Oh, I want to commit insurance fraud." with someone on the road.

@justlikemike816
Not once in the last 5 years did our big 3 lower prices, in fact, despite the obvious hardships American consumers faced they raised MSRP and dealerships took advantage of the demand. These companies are not short on cash, especially now that they produce vehicles at a fraction of the cost by outsourcing labor. The media will say that we may suffer from an automotive market recession, but maybe it’s time for those companies to absorb loses if they wish to reestablish the trust and support they had from previous customers.

@craigschulstad3500
Also, as current inventory is bought at dealerships, the size of dealer inventories will shrink because dealers actually have their inventory levels based upon their finance limit (e.g. dealer floorplans). So given a fixed amount of money available from the finance agencies, these higher priced vehicles will equate to lower inventory for a consumer to choose from.

@vasisualy7952
Raising car prices will not crash the auto industry, the demand will stay strong. Remember Covid era? Cars were flying off the lot with $5k-$10k market adjustments. There are still a huge number of rich people in this country who don't care about paying a few grand more, and there is a also huge number of poor people who don't know how to count money and will go into debt for 7-8 years just to get the car they think they deserve to drive. All the tariffs will do it to make a working class suffer.

Never believed in buying a brand new car. Cars just need to be maintained and fixed. Buying a used car and fixing it is so much more satisfying than paying a hefty car payment and high insurance for a new car every month. My car cost 2,000 at the auction and I’ve owned it for 3 years. My neighbor has an Escalade truck that cost 100,000 and we work at the same place. I know it’s all personal preference of what you want to drive but to me it just doesn’t make sense in this time.

@andrewm8703
I'm surprised no major network in the US has actually covered this, but when they tout the 'most American made car', they seem to entirely ignore that according to the American Automobile Labeling Act (which designates part origin), Canada is considered part of the US. They have done this because of the Auto pact, signed in the 60's, has so lixed the two nations supply chains. To an automaker, the border has not existed for 80 years.
Unscrambling the egg here is going to be a nightmare for everyone.

@matthunter7888
I’m not sympathetic. I just paid for a Yukon ultimate and they could have made this truck for 40k less, and not cut quality just cut nonsense features. Night vision, self driving, heads up display, massaging seats, air conditioned seats, tvs in headrests, 18 Bose speakers, 24” wheels, air ride suspension, etc etc it’s only expensive cause of the add ons. Not to build the truck it’s all the upsells, doubled the cost.
