It just dawned on me why Donald Trump loves Russia and China so much… It’s the color red. The Chinese flag is almost all red… When he thinks of Russia, he probably still thinks of the Soviet unx and that flag was almost all red. There’s Red Square in Moscow. Red is associated with Communism or socialism in almost every part of the world, except apparently the United States. So, he envisions red and thinks oh they’re Republican.

American politicians never learn from history. Both Trump and Biden forget that one of the major triggers for the Great Depression of 1929-1933 was the imposition of heavy tariffs against major trading partners - the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act passed on 17 June 1930. If Trump continues his tariff plans, we shall see a great disruption of world economic order, and probably cause a depression in the whole world.

@Becks071
These tariffs are putting so many small businesses out of business. I know one guy who does spray foam insulation. He said even a small increase in costs would put him under. The majority of his supplies come from Canada and he said people just cannot afford to pay more to keep him going. We will all feel this regardless of income.

@bw2442
When you move to another country away from the USA you begin to realize how hyper-military the USA is, it’s woven into the fabric of our society, the video game ads showing people getting shot, blown up, bleeding everywhere, war movies showing snipers killing, explosions, death, carnage, solving every problem with a swat team or special forces. I know the military is needed but imo this is way overkill. 800 bases everywhere really. I think this posture and cowboy attitude drowns out what we used to be before WW1, a peace-loving nation that had a message of goodwill towards men and ready to bring peace. It’s obvious how far from the mark we’ve fallen when you live in 3rd world nations where they are still people-centered instead of money or military-centered. If you live by the sword you die by the sword.

@basque888
Data for 2024:
China's export was 20% of total GDP.
China's exports to the US was 14% of all exports.
So, in 2024 China's exports to the US was only 2.8% of China's total GDP.
The idea that China needs the US market, as much as the Americans think needs to be reassessed.

@lmrony
Tariffs will hurt America but will only cause a small dent to China. Nobody wins in a trade war or any war, but in this case, China trades with almost every country & not trading with the USA is no big deal but the US consumer will definitely feel the effect as most of the items they buy actually are made in China & therefore a direct hit to their spending power.

@champ8605
I think the point not often made is that all the manufacturing equipment needed to kickstart manufacturing in America will be from China.

@alexisglaab2572
You know you can just build your own stuff, right? From the ground up, it is the most expensive way to establish industrial infrastructure, but maybe it NEEDS to be done. Over-reliance on China has utterly fucked over American production. BUT you can just build new stuff. This mentality of only ever buying premade stuff to save money is part of the problem. You really DO got to spend money before you can make it.

@champ8605
I take it you haven't really built anything? You realize to build machinery takes parts from all over the world right? Raw materials come from all over the world. To build a factory requires an enormous amount of planning, finding the land, purchasing the land, approvals, finding a contractor capable of the project, planning the equipment, finding the materials needed and so much more. It's not a matter of hey we will start making our own things let's build a factory. It will take years to even start producing anything let alone start to turn a profit. How many companies will want to sink millions when the next administration could reverse the tariffs? Oh but it just means we produce from existing factories and plants, yeah then those companies will price gouge because they can. If companies wanted to manufacture in America they already would, yet they outsource because of profits. Trump outsourced to China himself and even talked openly about it.

@juliahello6673
For manufacturing a complex product you need many, sometimes thousands of materials and parts. You can’t ramp up all the factories to make those materials and parts and then, when they are all ramped up, make the car or plane or other complex product. That doesn’t work economically. How would those parts companies stay afloat when they don’t yet have any buyers?

@st4331
Many Western countries have been very wary of China, but Trump is tipping the balance towards China being a better trading partner.

@kenbehrens5778
As Australia found. When Australia was an unreliable trading partner and blocked Chinese products hundreds of times, they retaliated. Coal, barley, timber, wine, lobster weren't bought from Australia. The 20 billion loss to Australia's exports was made up by China buying elsewhere. Now relations have improved.

@valsyaranamual6853
Countries don't like being told what and how to do things from another country, definitely not the USA/Trump. The world can see/hear that he is incompetent!

@whatever6455
Technically, Americans can just mine Tungsten in the US, but they don't want to. Also, China has more Tungsten deposits than the US.

@remix-yy1hs
It costs a lot of money and you can't do that in one day, it will take a couple of years and it will be more expensive. No US company would invest in a losing game. China thought about that, they will crash the price and flood the market and you will lose your investments.

@davidwong5197
Here's the problem:
Average US CEO makes 1M, with bonus and option 17.7M. Average US product gross margin 35%.
Average Taiwanese CEO makes $200K, average Chinese product gross margin 5%.
US do not want to compete in commodity. Not enough margin.

@ElainEmail-m7q
Every country is buying their own locally produced goods and services now. Why not?
"SUCCESS is the best REVENGE."
To retaliate against the USA Tariffs Man is to stop buying goods and services from the USA.

@larrysherk
Trump is worried about the world currency status of the dollar. Not an issue, really, because most trade will be done ignoring the dollar. So Trump can keep his dollar; it will just keep shrinking in value.

@Machinedmetal
Tariffs raised prices in 2018. And the new ones just raised prices 25 percent in my industry. Corporations are taking advantage of it and raised prices in January. They now want to lay off workers to increase more profits.

@MS6InvaderCommander
7:45 I want to correct this bit, billionaires don't want market stability. Currently, Trump is also being investigated for INTENTIONALLY crashing markets and telling his buddies in advance so they can take proper action and cash out before the crash and gain millions more out of it.

@mgfunky
I am an American and one thing we Americans know is the fact that the more wealthy you are the louder the mouth gets, the bigger posture gets, the more threats get, but rarely actually put their money where their mouth is and we can see this behavior played out internationally. Rest assured the US itself will not go to war with China, and if this was the case we would have seen our troops in Russia years ago. The world is much different and when people say the US is now a service economy that also plays out in the military. We will pay and sell you lies and use our posture and mouth to get other countries to do our bidding. This is the current US reality. Actually, people of the US are loving Chinese people more and more. Thanks to TikTok ban.

@jktech2117
Bro if it wasn't for this (I'm Brazilian) I wouldn't have a Chinese close friend that we play to meet someday in the far future and will be fun because he will have married his boyfriend and I will have married mine and will be a very wholesome thing.
Also, I plan to move to the US if Trump doesn't ruin it.

@Jerry.Luna63
The tariffs are reciprocal. They charge us a tariff, we charge them the same.
If they remove the tariffs they’ve had for decades on us, we’ll do the same.
Everyone charges the U.S. tariffs, that’s why there’s no Ford’s in the EU. They make owning American cars very expensive for Europeans, yet we don’t charge them anything and allow them to sell their Audi’s and BMW’s.
That’s just one example out of hundreds.
If they remove their tariffs on us, or build in the U.S., then no tariff for them!
It’s deal psychology.

@jorgesuasin03
University student here studying economics in Singapore… the tariffs placed on the US were agreed upon BY the US during negotiations overseen by the World Trade Organisations over the last few decades. In fact, the US has also placed tariffs on many other countries prior to Donald Trump's first step into office. The purpose of these negotiations was to reduce the number of tariffs worldwide (post great depression) as tariffs are detrimental to the global economy as a whole and everyone suffers as it affects the free flow of trade. By DT shooting tariffs left and right, he is kinda destroying the global reputation of the US and back tracking on past agreements sending us spiraling towards another possible recession.
Please AMERICANS GET YOURSELF EDUCATED everyone on our side of the world is wincing at this idiocy.
As my Economics of Globalisation professor commented earlier this week, watching the US is like looking at a Car crash in slow motion on a 5-lane road WITH ALL THE OTHER lanes being empty all whilst knowing the outcome of this crash.

@gerardallen3438
I want America to win but at the same time, it's hard to deny all the wild shit we have done to other countries and within our own country over time. It's only a matter of time before they all get together like they are doing now and change the narrative. Not sure what it would feel like if we lose all of this and how hard it would ultimately hurt us in the US. We really need to change for the future and do it fast.

@ameenahameed8874
Feeling the same way. The US has done some of its own people wrong - as well as people in other countries. It's obvious the world is moving away from us and they have every right to, and our country will continue to decline but I think it is time for an internal reset anyway and our country will have to change to be able to make it in a new world. Either that or we don't survive.

@KColes63
I beg to differ. Take a look at what is happening as we speak with your biggest Tourism partner, Canada. As they boycott EVERYTHING US including Kentucky whiskey which Canada is the biggest consumer of and Kentucky has already shown concern and unitedly the rest of the world has united with Canada and Mexico. I know the US likes to think they are the Almighty Power but they aren't!

@JohnDoe-th6ne
Totally agree. Just ask these questions. Are we better off since 2018 trade war started? Does America become stronger? Will things get better or worse in days to come? Only look at prices at the local market and we will have answers. Why is this so hard for Washington to understand?
