In 1990, a new apartment in Tokyo cost 934,000 yen per square meter—about 41,000 yuan at the time—requiring 26 years of working without spending a single yen to afford one. Even with subsequent price drops and interest rates falling below 2%, the desire to buy remains weak. Between 1983 and 2013, homeownership among 25- to 29-year-olds dropped from 24.8% to just 11.3%.

I think it’s the end results that have people checking out of working or normal life goals.
I have been watching this decline for decades. It used to be you can get a job with any company and if you stick with it you could be making enough to buy a house and still afford to have kids. Back in the 50 and 60’s you only needed one income to do it.
Working extra hard in your career and investing could get you well off to being a millionaire.
Now there is zero job security and if you’re not actively trying to move up the company will fire you.

I have been watching this decline for decades. It used to be you can get a job with any company and if you stick with it you could be making enough to buy a house and still afford to have kids. Back in the 50 and 60’s you only needed one income to do it.
Working extra hard in your career and investing could get you well off to being a millionaire.
Now there is zero job security and if you’re not actively trying to move up the company will fire you.
