Well if you get accustomed to it, I don't find it a problem. Yeah its a bit harder to write than english still, but you have to write much less characters, with long english words being just one compact Chinese character.

I'm left-handed and my handwriting is barely legible on good days but never had a problem with writing characters. The key is to learn the right stroke order from the start (because correcting it later is painful;() From my experience, even if your writing is messy but the stroke order is correct (most) people will be able to read it.

Chinese informal handwriting is totally different to printed characters (perhaps your first language has some kind of cursive writing that's quite different too?), so that saves many strokes.

I totally believe that's true for you now, but that's just due to lack of practice. Dungans read and write a language very close to Mandarin using an alphabet. Like most adult learners coming from alphabetic languages, I had a phase where I could read more easily in pinyin than in characters.

Imaging you are a Chinese student sitting in a literature, history or politics exam, and you have to hand write all the short essay questions…it was a nightmare to me. But all about muscle memory if you “trained” enough to write many many words in a short time…and imaging you are a HK student and you have to write traditional Chinese, not simplified…I could feel their pain…good thing is Chinese is quite efficient language so we don’t need to write so much to convey the same information.

The benefit of Chinese characters is that each character can carry a lot of information, a 4 character sentence could take significantly more words in other languages. So while writing each character is inconvenient at times, you write less of them.

Sometimes I use English to note down things just because it’s faster. It’s faster a lot of the times. But never do I feel the same amount of aesthetics while writing in English or looking at most people’s handwriting. The variety of characters, structural differences among characters, density and sparseness contract as well as balance is on another level. Obviously it takes a bit of effort to unlock decent handwriting in Chinese but it’s so worth it.

I totally believe that's true for you now, but that's just due to lack of practice. Dungans read and write a language very close to Mandarin using an alphabet. Like most adult learners coming from alphabetic languages, I had a phase where I could read more easily in pinyin than in characters.

Imaging you are a Chinese student sitting in a literature, history or politics exam, and you have to hand write all the short essay questions…it was a nightmare to me. But all about muscle memory if you “trained” enough to write many many words in a short time…and imaging you are a HK student and you have to write traditional Chinese, not simplified…I could feel their pain…good thing is Chinese is quite efficient language so we don’t need to write so much to convey the same information.

The benefit of Chinese characters is that each character can carry a lot of information, a 4 character sentence could take significantly more words in other languages. So while writing each character is inconvenient at times, you write less of them.

Sometimes I use English to note down things just because it’s faster. It’s faster a lot of the times. But never do I feel the same amount of aesthetics while writing in English or looking at most people’s handwriting. The variety of characters, structural differences among characters, density and sparseness contract as well as balance is on another level. Obviously it takes a bit of effort to unlock decent handwriting in Chinese but it’s so worth it.
