The Trump administration is taking direct ownership stakes in private sector companies, from chipmaker Intel to rare earths producer MP Materials, reshaping the relationship between government and markets. Steven Rattner of Willett Advisors and Sarah Bauerle Danzman of the Atlantic Council weigh the merits of national security to justify the government picking winners and losers, and what it means for competition, innovation, and trust in free markets.

No it's crony capitalism. Business is not subsidized for "national" interest, but to pay off various political backers or oligarchic monopoly control. It's not the Japanese model, it's the Russian one.

There is a name for it, its called Technocracy. Its an old idea from the 1930's born in Canada. The map of the Technate of America, published back then is quite interesting, and would help people that are lost, with the latest geo-politic events of the White House, understand a lot of what is happening, and what's to come.

For nearly 50 years we have been told what counts is unfettered markets and stockholder dividends. During that time China has developed by doing the exact opposite. So its not too surprising governments around the world are copying them. Personally l have always been in favor. We know far more now about how economic growth occurs and its just stupid to carry on as if we have learned nothing.

Worthless companies that keep losing money, they should be nationalized to stop the incompetence. The "free market" has been failing since 2008 and every time they fail they come crying to the government! Steven Rattner seems to think that the government hands out "free money" but in fact the government is handing out the taxpayers money.
@DwynAgGaire
Does the theory match the reality? Market economies are touted as superior but if they/we are failing to compete with state managed ones, does that not poke some holes in that assertion? Then look at the need for an energy transition, western economies have been pitifully slow in rising to the challenge of allocating capital to meet this necessity. And we've 'known' about the issues with greenhouse gasses with high certainty since the 1960's. Even with all of it's successes, and they are many, our systems, of governance and economics have failed us pretty badly, perhaps even catastrophically so. I think it's time to be less dogmatic about our ideologies and more pragmatic about the solutions.

It doesn't matter what they do. This is like talking about controlling the path of a hurricane. Both sides are operating on what can be called religious beliefs, because of the level of unpredictability and complexity being faced. Instead of admitting that there is lot of unnecessary habitus based theatre going on to provide illusion of control. We know from history religious beliefs don't upxe themselves as fast as the world changes so this theatre will continue and can be safely ignored.

State capitalism or state corporatism? The former wants to run corporations, creating patronage positions. The latter wants to insure the production of materials, information, and services according to its requirements, insuring profits, perhaps taking a share of profits, but without active participation in the direction of the firm. Bloomberg, who hates Trump, favors the former, Trump the latter. Wilson practiced the latter during W.W. 1, as did FDR during the Depression and during W.W. 2. Trump needs a war/depression to do what they did.

America is best understood as Titanic, this foolish Trump regime is the Iceberg, the Wealthy are the First Class passengers, have enough resources and so they are already on the Lifeboats. The Middle Class is the Second Class passengers, struggling to survive, the poor are the Third Class passengers, large in numbers with no access to life boats. The MAGA people are like Titanic's electrical engineers, struggling to keep the ship/Trump regime afloat but ultimately none of them survives.

This eliminates competition, which eliminates innovation, which is detrimental to national security. Innovation is what sets America apart from the world, but for this, freedom is necessary.
@pirazel7858
There are things where nationalisation makes sense, like critical infrastructure, so you can make sure it works and is available for everyone and doesn't fall under the control of foreign influence like roads, channels, airports, railways. But this buying spree is so random and without any strategy visible

There is no denying that capitalism as we knew it is over. But that was a long time coming you cannot have neoliberalism move for 40 years stripping the bottom 80% of any hope of getting ahead and then end up here with crony capitalism without major changes to the concept of capitalism
@adamrou12345
We have been doing it for a while. We extract the finest sweet crude oil on this planet and we refine more oil than any other country but instead of refining our own good high quality crude we export it and import garbage laden sour crude to refine. We have limited refinery infrastructure for our own easier, cleaner, cheaper to refine oil. We do this because our government allows energy companies to write off royalties paid to foreign governments while they tax the hell out of royalties paid to Americans. They can pay exorbitant bribes to skirt local laws and then write them off while making us dependent on foreign oil.

I want to say something maybe you have already known. some countries criticize China a lot. but deep down, they all are the same . they just have different covers defined in different ways. one example, they talk down Chinese guanxi, but they have social networking which can go even further

@pirazel7858
There are things where nationalisation makes sense, like critical infrastructure, so you can make sure it works and is available for everyone and doesn't fall under the control of foreign influence like roads, channels, airports, railways. But this buying spree is so random and without any strategy visible

It’s crossed my mind a few times that Trump’s economic approach seems more and more to be mirroring traditional adversaries.
@doubleshot90
It's called Japanification ofbthe economy, that's where the US is headed... The biggest shareholder of the major Japanese companies is the Bank of Japan.

There is no denying that capitalism as we knew it is over. But that was a long time coming you cannot have neoliberalism move for 40 years stripping the bottom 80% of any hope of getting ahead and then end up here with crony capitalism without major changes to the concept of capitalism
