How common is plastic surgery becoming?
As an American, just spent a week with some students from China for their internship. Learned that several girls had already had plastic surgery — these are 19-23 year olds — mainly for their eyes.
Everyone should feel free to do what they want to feel better, but this made me sad. I felt it took something away from them. Once I learned about it at dinner one night, I could not help but notice its effect.
Is it because they are in America, and wanted to look more “American”? Or is this common in China too?

Pretty obvious. Crafting your eyes around an "American" look is doomed to fail. Americans being quite a diverse bunch - almost as diverse as Chinese.

Facial plastic surgery in East Asia is just as common and usual as putting on makeup. It’s like a fashion trend, with each season, a new procedure/look becomes fashionable although it may look ridiculous in the past, such as getting protruding ears. They don’t want to look American, they have their own beauty standards different to Americans or Europeans in general, although double eyelids did come from European influence.

We always preach about how everyone should be able to do whatever they want with their own bodies and that is true, but when a whole demographic gets the same type of cosmetic surgeries to look like a handful of people it becomes less of a self expression and more of a pressure to conform to certain beauty standards.
Bubbitsluv
A lot of Americans get plastic surgery too, I don’t think Chinese people get double eye lid to look more “American”, Chinese beauty standards are extremely high and it’s because they want to get rid of an insecurity. It’s super common in Korea too to the point it’s given as a graduation gift. Bigger eyes are considered cute and you can’t really tell if it’s unnatural.
ths108
I encourage you to look into this topic more. This kind of surgery doesn't have anything to do with Americans in particular, but it has a lot to do with the west and (maybe unsurprisingly) Japan. For the most part, until the second half of the 20th century, no one thought anything about particularly round eyes (a la Fan Bing Bing, Angelababy, Dilraba) except them being associated with non-East Asian people.
Bubbitsluv
To be honest, I never personally associated double eyelids with the West. While Japan has certainly been influenced by the United States in some political and cultural ways, I don’t think the feature itself is inherently Western. Many Chinese people naturally have double eyelids without any cosmetic procedures, so I’ve always seen it more as a beauty preference than something strictly tied to Western influence.
Of course, one could argue that the preference may have Eurocentric roots, and that perspective is worth considering. At the same time, similar features exist naturally across many different populations without surgery. That’s why I find it interesting that discussions about beauty standards often default to the idea that people are trying to look “more Western,” when in reality the traits themselves aren’t exclusive to any single region or culture.
ths108
When talking about beauty standards, we're referring to what society considers the most beautiful. To that end, China and, by extension Japan and Korea have literally thousands of years of history of valuing things like clear, very pale skin and high nose bridges, both of which Europeans have also valued in history, but round eyes were never valued in East Asia. That isn't to say they were perceived as 'ugly', but no one ever proclaimed them to be particularly 'beautiful'. This is in stark contrast to South Asia and places west of it that often praised women with large, round doe-like eyes in literature.

the double eyelid obsession is its own sort of aesthetic value in East Asia. it's much more likely that non-diaspora would undergo that surgery than people in the diaspora, so it's not really about fitting into America like you're suggesting. notably, all the Chinese Americans who undergo the process will likely follow East Asian aesthetic trends. the very Americanized women (be it following Asian American subcultures, like ABG, or other kinds of American aesthetic culture like the Asian girls in majority white sororities who always have that weird brown/blond bayalage hair) don't typically opt into it.
the "wanting to be white" thing is a bit of a doozy; like yes many of the "ideal" aesthetic features are associated with a type of whiteness (defined eyelids, high nose bridge, pale skin) but it doesn't necessarily mean that they want to be white .... they want to be a pretty Chinese person, in which the beauty standard is heavily influenced by whiteness.
in terms of aesthetic procedure comparisons, I'd liken eyelid surgery in East Asia to braces in the USA. Both of them have the claim of health/medical benefit (blepharoplasty is a treatment for ptosis, which most people with monolids/hooded eyes have to varying degrees of severity --- for many it doesn't bother them, for others their eyelids droop so much it impacts their visibility and/or the eyelashes poke their eyeballs) while actually being for aesthetic reasons. they're both very normalized as a rite of passage for young folks. as an American (I'm American too), you're probably very desensitized to the severity of orthodontics in a way that you're not to eyelid surgery. in reality, ortho is actually very intensive and expensive -- think about it this way: a parent throws down 5-8k USD for their kids to get teeth yanked out and the metal fused to their teeth to get manually adjusted monthly for 1-3 years so that their crooked teeth look straight. compare that to a one time eyelid procedure that takes maybe 1-3 hours (depending on what kind of bleph) that costs 2k USD (less, if performed in the mainland and calculated by CNY). The latter is actually much less invasive, but is demonized as some kind of extreme PS because it hasn't been normalized the same way to us that ortho has.
When I make this comparison, Americans are often defensive about the medical value of ortho and claim it isn't fair, but really ortho's medical claims have always been questionable in terms of whether it's really such a benefit that most kids should do it (obviously there are many medically serious situations in which it's necessary) when 1) most kids teeth end up shifting back anyway because they don't wear their retainers and 2) notably this practice is only so heavy handed in the US and a few other Western countries. The true value of ortho for most people is in the aesthetic of straight teeth, similar to how the value of bleph is the aesthetic of the double eyelid.

Obviously, this is my own personal opinion, but it saddens a bit when I notice Asians who got eyelid surgery. I tend to be naive, so it is my husband who can tell right away. It's happening everywhere. It's the one luxury that many Asians get for themselves. I'm not at all sure that this is a trend that will always continue in future generations. But who knows? Maybe things will get worse.

Yes — 4 girls in my East Asian Studies small group (who I know about…out of ~15 girls) have shared about their surgeries. It came up in discussion. I am one of only 3 guys in the group, and one of two non-Asians (one other girl and me).
I would say 2 of the girls look very good and natural — not sure what they looked like before, but they are beautiful…
However…two have an “uncanny valley” type of thing going on. It’s like their eyes no longer fit their face — they are way too wide. I knew something was off before they shared.
Don’t get me wrong, they are still pretty…but I can’t imagine how beautiful they’d be naturally — or if their surgeon did a better job. A lot of other girls in the class are very beautiful, I believe without surgery, and I hope they do t decide to get work that goes too far…
My guess is some girls are much better candidates than others for this…but doctors probably don’t say no even if they’re not. If they do, the girls will find a doctor who will.

I swear the most annoying thing about post like this is that they always assume people want to become American/white simply because of the somewhat similar beauty standard. The next one will be condemning people trying to lighten their skin.
plastic surgery has become more common as it become cheaper. Is it widely done? Not that common if you see the overall %. But it'll definitely increase as the income level improve.

in terms of aesthetic procedure comparisons, I'd liken eyelid surgery in East Asia to braces in the USA.
