I’ve been lucky enough to see a bit of the world despite being lower working class. I also reckon I’ve had a more enriching experience traveling on my meagre means, meeting the common people etc. The places I ended up in were more often than not decided by opportunities to visit friends or find some temporary employment than to seek out a ‘nice’ place to visit.

Australia:
Lived in Perth: a very livable city, great place to grow up but not a tourist destination.
Lived in Geraldton: hot and wind blasted, very arid with a large indigenous population, not a place any tourist would stop for but lovely and wild. Great beaches and dunes when the wind is right.

Ukraine; Kiev, went to this city just to watch a gogol bordello concert, that sounds rich but didn’t cost fuck all, €35 to be exact, it was O.K, definitely not a place to go on your own if you have no grasp of the language or (mafia/kgb) culture.

Croatia: Dubrovnik: What a beautiful city, once the cruise ships have taken their passengers onboard and set sail to the next victim port this is an absolutely spectacular place to hang out. The ‘hole in the wall’ bar is a must in my books, can’t tell you how to find it but look for a hole in the wall on the ocean-side, looks like a dead end but opens out to the adriatic .

Namibia; I love this country, visited it from north to south, east to west, went in ‘winter’ my friend and I were the only people camping pretty much everywhere we arrived so enjoyed the absolute quiet and wildlife on offer even a honey badger strolling past the campfire, the whole country is stunning.

Tunesia; the african country no one ever heard of, my companion and I got robbed and jilted by the police upon arrival but I still enjoyed it. Crazy bar fights with furniture flying around the room, quiet desert, friendly people .

Mexico; We took the slow train down to Mazatlan from the border, spent a night sleeping beside the tracks waiting for it to arrive and about a day sitting in the train. Bribed the train staff with illegal substances bought on the train and got to hang out on the back ‘balcony’ watching the sonoron desert trickle by.

2. New Zealand - Travelled here for a family trip when my aunt and uncle were living in Auckland. Rented a motor home and drove across the two islands. Swam with dolphins, did zorbing, hiked in Mordor, etc.

3. Canada - I had a Japanese exchange student live with me in elementary school but unfortunately had problems with his visa so had to go live in Vancouver. My uncle lives in Seattle so my mom and I flew to Seattle and then drove up to visit Hiro (the exchange student)

4. Japan - I have been to Japan four times throughout high school. First time was with typical tourist tour program and really was not the authentic cultural experience I was looking for, so I joined this program called Youth In Action. In this program I had weekly cultural lessons and fundraised constantly for two years in addition to language classes at my school. I stayed for a month in 2014 and 2016 and traveled all over the country, staying with host families and visiting schools. This past winter I was part of an American delegation to Tsuruoka, Yamagata on a grant from the Japanese government to participate in an English Camp for Japanese and Taiwanese students.

5. (5, 6, 7, 8) Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden - I went with my family to these four countries during spring break. We flew into Frankfurt and spent a couple hours there before flying to Copenhagen, where we stayed. We took a day trip to Malmö to watch the U-21 USA Women’s Hockey Team smack Russia 8–0 and got on TV! I went to Tivoli Gardens and some castle (maybe in Nordsjaelland). We then went to Amsterdam where we spent a couple of days. We toured the red light district and watched the Oranje (Netherlands Soccer Team) play Turkey at the Amsterdam ArenA.

6. (9) Mongolia - I went to an international school in Denver for high school and Ulaanbaatar is a sister city of Denver. We would have exchange students come to our school for a couple days every year and we would send students for several weeks in the summer. I applied to go to Mongolia and received a scholarship to go for two weeks. I stayed with a host family and participated in a leadership conference in Ulaanbaatar with American and Mongolian students. I stayed in a ger (traditional nomadic hut) in Möngönmorit and caught a glimpse of traditional nomadic herdsmen life. I also lost my passport and had to stay another week!
