Yellowstone National Park/Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Yellowstone is the first ever National Park and is well-known for it’s stunning natural scenery and wildlife. It is one of the few places in the USA to have wild bison. Reintroduced wolves have given the park a boost. This has resulted in a lot of traffic. If you want to avoid the crowds, visit the nearby Grand Teton National Park. It is much less traveled, but still has stunning beauty and nature. Both parks have extensive network of hiking trails, however, BEWARE: Bison, Moose and Grizzly Bears are common, and all can be dangerous if encountered.

Boston, Massachusetts
Boston is regarded as the birthplace of the USA. It was the foundation where the American Revolution sprang from. Unsurprisingly, there are many things related to that in and around Boston. The USS Constitution is also floating as a museum in the harbor. Plymouth Rock is only a short drive away.

Mount Rushmore, South Dakota
One of the iconic landmarks of the USA is often skipped on tourist visits. The reason for this is obvious…it is in the middle of nowhere. South Dakota is literally in the middle of the country, and there is not much around it. However, for those who can afford the extra day or two, it is worth it. The location, the Black Hills, is beautiful, and the drive up to the monument is terrific. Also, not a far drive away is Custer State Park, where you can go see some wildlife, and the Badlands, which is often called the Grand Canyon of South Dakota. Trust me, it is beautiful.

Miami area, Florida
I have yet to go to this area, but it is tops on my bucket list. The Everglades is a massive swamp. However, it is slowly being eroded by sea water and invasive species which reduce the the plants that form a barrier against the sea. Miami, from all that I hear, has a bustling atmosphere and is a beautiful city.

This is on everyone’s list, and for good reason. It is huge and beautiful, and is truly one of the best natural wonders of the world. A relatively short distance away(3 hours) is Monument Valley, which was a favorite setting for old western movie sets

This is also on my list of places to go that I haven’t been to yet. It is a pristine wilderness that has many huge wild areas. It is quite far out of the way, so many are not able to go. On the bright side, you won’t be inundated with tourists.

Appalachia is a beautiful scenic area the separates the East Coast from the great lakes/midwest region. It encompasses many states, including the Carolinas and Virginias. The most stunning part is the Blue Ridge Mountains(above photo). Extensive nature trails and a surprising amount of wildlife as well.

Maine
Located all the way at the northeastern tip of the USA is the often overlooked state of Maine. Known across the rest of the country for it’s lobsters, it also sports a lot of wilderness areas and wildlife. Boating is also very popular. It obviously gets slammed with snow in the winter, but if you can go in the summer, there is a ton to do. Go to a local seafood joint and get some fresh lobster or crab…you will not find any better.

Before ending, let me say that these are wild, often remote, areas. The beauty of these areas leads many to make poor decisions that can end with them being lost, injured, or even killed. If you are going off to explore, be aware of the weather and wildlife in the area. Fatalities are rare, but they do happen, and are often the result of poor planning.

In winter, the crowds are definitely smaller, and the city is stunning after a fresh snowfall.
