An estimated 1 billion sea creatures cooked to death off the Canadian coast in the record heat wave last week that also scorched America’s Pacific Northwest and claimed hundreds of human lives.

Chris Harley, a marine biologist at the University of British Columbia, calculated the massive toll on mussels and other marine animals that died in the heat along the Salish Sea off Vancouver. The inland Pacific body of water stretches from the Campbell River north of Vancouver down to Seattle and Olympia in Washington state.

As he discovered endless rows of gaping dead mussels, along with dead clams, snails, sea stars and barnacles on Vancouver’s Kitsilano Beach in late June, Harley said he was “stunned.”

The scientist says mussels are the “poster child” indicator of the heat’s devastation on the ocean. They’re the most vulnerable because they can’t move to cooler water.

“A mussel on the shore in some ways is like a toddler left in a car on a hot day,” Harley told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. “They are stuck there until the parent comes back or, in this case, the tide comes back in. They’re at the mercy of the environment ... during the heat wave, it just got so hot that the mussels, there was nothing they could do.”

Mussels can tolerate temperatures as high as 86 degrees Fahrenheit for short periods of time. But Harley and a colleague using a thermal imaging camera found temperatures as high as 122 degrees along the rocky shoreline of the Salish Sea.

Such a massive die-off has a major effect on the environment. Mussels, which are in the in the middle of the food chain, provide a key transition between shore and ocean. They filter out particles and make water clearer, and they provide important nutrition to other animals, such as starfish and sea ducks.

“They grab plankton that’s floating around in the water and use it to grow, and then they feed other things on the shore so they sort of connect the open water habitat to the shoreline,” Harley explained to the Toronto Star.

Harley said similar discoveries of dead shellfish have already been made in areas of Washington state. He plans to visit the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island to check seashore deaths from the crushing heat in those areas.

Such deadly heat waves are more likely to happen more frequently and with even more extreme temperatures due to climate change, Harley warned.

“Eventually, we just won’t be able to sustain these populations of filter feeders on the shoreline to be anywhere near the extent that we’re used to,” he said.

The deaths are just the latest dramatic sign that the environment is suffering severe consequences from climate change, Harley said.

From my experience probably an estimate of statistical model generated from empirical data.
So the following would be the simplest linear model where each entry to the estimate would be the following where each variable (density_sp1 for example) is a matrix of values.
(density_sp1 x area x mortality)( scalar) +
etc
The stats or how the model is estimated depends.

Yes it does and that why it’s a convenient excuse.
The reality is the earth has never heated this quickly. It is no coincidence that at this time human are releasing millions of tons of C02 into our atmosphere. A known green house gas. Which is known to cause the global temperature to rise.
But let’s assume that it isn’t our fault. Why on Earth would you just want to ignore it AND contribute to it? You think the earth is gonna give a shit who’s fault it is? Lol

We are actually in the middle of an ice age, just not in a glacial period. The whole climate is destabilizing and it’s happening incredibly fast. For such a change to happen it would normally take a whole lot longer than a century. By scales of magnitude. We can track how greenhouse emissions correlate to observed changes in climate over a very short period of time. People have known about the greenhouse effect since the 1800s. There is no debate to be had. This is not some natural phenomenon. This is our fault. And passing the buck isn’t going to change that, and it’s not going to fix things.
Edit: lmao his account is an hour old and has -25 karma. Something tells me it’s a troll.

That is true, but the speed at which it occurs and the order in which temperature and CO2 rise and influence each other is reversed. It was eye opening when I read into that.
There is undisputed evidence that the greenhouse gasses we added to the environment are worsening this natural cycle.
It is very likely it's not a cycle anymore and that we have caused irriversable damage.
We don't have to worry and debate about it however. Human greed ensures we will ruin our planet regardless.

Biggest heat wave ever in June in US. Floods in NYC subways. Antarctic lake disappears in I think three days. Nah, our climate and environments totally fine. 11 people a minute dying from starvation exceeding the pandemics rate in killing people…we are really doing well.

This headline just refers to the larger creatures, and the ones we eat. The loss of what THEY eat is the real tragedy. Billions of trillions of plankton and sea lice etc. "Our" shellfish can recover when the cool waters return, but not if the stuff THEY eat isn't there.
Nutrient/fertilizer runoffs and our sewage, plus industrial discharges into our precious coastlines (rivers and ocean) do the real damage. Without our shit flooding estuaries, the "sea creatures" can recover from a heatwave. Coastlines are the cradle of life. If we cover them in muck and cement and asphalt the resilience is removed from our ecosystems

No impact on corporate income? Republicans couldn't care less.
To combat our Climate Crisis (thanks Mark Antonuccio - I agree, a better phrase) we need to reduce the amount of Republicans. Fewer Republicans is the answer. It will allow us to have a much greater response to this crisis.

They are going to have to put up with the stench of all of those creatures decomposing for the next few months. I live at Lake Havasu, about 12 years ago the lake became infected with a Koi Herpes virus and every carp in the 45 mile long lake died within a couple weeks, literally millions of dead carp floated on the surface of the lake and decomposed. It took many years for the lake to recover, fishing yielded nothing for several years, carp were a huge part of the food chain and many species of fish besides the carp suffered huge losses.

We are already at the point we were warned about. The planet cannot sustain the feeding and waste of this many people, not to mention the areas of excess that cause so much more. If we were at zero carbon emissions we're still generating billions of tons of waste and pollution not to mention deadly chemicals.
"In 1987 Earth Overshoot Day was December 19. In 2002, was October 3. In 2012, it was 22 August. In 2018, it moved to 1 August, the earliest date ever recorded, meaning that a year's worth of resources are being consumed in just 212 days.Nov 23, 2020."

If you need to own a gas-guzzling truck , also buy a small economical running car , it will pay for itself when you use it from your gas savings and give you something comfortable to drive when you're not hauling or pulling or needing the use of a excessive carbon consuming truck .
You end up with more choice and the planet gets a little less CO2 pumped into the atmosphere .

I think that for most people, climate change is equated to just rising sea levels. And that happens so slowly that it is easy to just relegate it to a non-immediate threat.

This is just the beginning of mass extinction of all kinds of living beings. Al Gore tried to warn us 20 years ago (An Inconvenient Truth) about climate change. Just imagine our world if Gore had been declared the winner of the presidency in 2000 (he really did win). No invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. No 2008 Great Recession (Clinton left Bush a surplus which Bush got rid of right away with tax cuts. Sound familiar?). Our world would look so different!!!
