It is a country that is alive:
I can describe The Netherlands as “vivid” or “alive”. There is just so much to do, no matter where you are. Because we are a small country with over 17,000,000 inhabitats, the place is crowded, but in a good way. Unless you are living up in the far north or on the islands, I can not imagine anyone living more than 10 minutes away from shops, a mall, restaurants, a night club or any kind of attraction (and this goes for practically the entire country!). Floortje dessing (a dutch Tv presentor that does a lot of travel shows) said that there is no country like The Netherlands in terms of things that someone can do and that are actually accesible within the area. There are festivals everywhere, you can have a terrific night out in basically any city that has more than 30,000 inhabitants and the party in the bigger cities is on basically every night of the week. I live in, what is considered, a rural part of the Netherlands and even here we have a large shopping center, plenty of bars and plenty of restaurants. Personally, I cannot help to think that equally sized cities in Germany are very dull and depressing.
Infrastructure
The Netherlands has the #1 infrastructure in the world. This means that you can cross the country in any kind of way in a reasonable time. Everything is within a good distance and navigation is very very clear. The public transportation is excelent, allthough some people can not stop complaining about it (it is in our nature). This also means that moving out for college might not be neccesary at all and going out in another city an hour away is no problem. Are you a account manager? Hell why not go to Amsterdam in the morning, then go to your client in Arnhem and Finish of the day in Eindhoven to drive Back to your house in Enschede. It is all very possible.

Okay I might be a little biased on this one. I am dutch and also living in The Netherlands. I go out on vacation once in a while to Germany, France, Czech republic, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Switzerland and Austria. Now I am going to explain (from the point of view of a 23 year old student) why The Netherlands is the best country to live in.
Now before I start let’s look at some comparison material. In many rankings The Netherlands would make it into the top 5 of best countries to live in, mostly together with scandinavian countries and Switzerland. I will use some of my own opinions about these countries to reflect on things happening in The Netherlands.
Let’s start with the strong points of the Netherlands:

Education:
After the USA and the UK, The Netherlands is one of the countries with a lot of good universities (most notable is probably Delft University). While the University of Zurich might be very notable, The Netherlands houses a lot more universities with, allthough a slightly lower score, very good credentials. Overall the universities are definitly better than in Scandinavian countries. For researchers, the dutch scientific publisher Elsevier might be a good way for people doing research in The Netherlands to get noticed. In a recent study, researches found that dutch childeren were the happiest and also the best performing at elementary school. Scandinavian countries might brag about their superior educational system, but we are definetely doing something right here. Overall, study pressure is low and allows students to take on other activities, such as sports or doing social work.
Sports
Apart from winter sports (okay scandinavia and Zwitserland you are much better in this), the Netherlands is able to compete in almost every sport. Allthough The Netherlands is foremost a football country, we are also highly competitive in field hockey, baseball, formula 1, darts, swimming, sailing, rowing, speedskating, fighting sports and cycling. This is because sport facilities are among the best in the world and childeren are introduced to sports at a young age. Every year, The Netherlands manages to bring home some gold medals or world cups. If you are looking to do sports in The Netherlands, youll have plenty of choices within cycling distance. The times that people would think strange of you for choosing hockey over Football are also long gone.

Career
The size of the country, the infrastructure, the knowledge and it’s position within Europe. All these factors allow for large international companiess to reside in the Netherlands (mostly in the Randstad). Besides the dutch multinationals like: Royal Dutch Shell, Unilever, Randstad, Philips, Heineken, ING and many more, there are also a lot of foreign companies with a international office in the Netherlands. Career opportunities are much better than in scandinavia and The Netherlands houses a lot of expat workers. For financial institutions however, you should go to Switserland. No matter where you live in The Netherlands, big companies will always be available within an hours drive.
Okay after these advantages (I did not mention everything at all) we go to some lesser points of the Netherlands. These points are not bad for me per se, but might be a downside to foreigners.

Paid education:
Okay this sucks, also for me. But okay, it is still not as bas as in, for example, the USA. College is not free, but it is heavily sponsores by the government. A bachelor degree will cost you about €2,000 per year. So after a 4 year programme you will have paid about €8,000 in total. Really not that bad if you ask me, but I would have liked to see it different.
The Weather
Rain rain rain rain, cold cold cold cold, rain rain rain rain, occasional sun.
The food
Dutch traditional food is very bland (exept for the fries and bitterballen). Luckily there are lot of foreign foods introduced over the years.

Inability to learn dutch as a foreigner
Well atleast you won’t learn it from talking to dutch people. We have this built in code to switch to English as soon as a foreigner tries to talk to us.
Landscape
I am a 23 year old guy, i do not care that is it very boring and flat. Old people might like every other country in the world better.
Hope you enjoyed reading this!

Ok before you “boo” and “hiss” and throw rocks, let me explain. I spent the better part of four years working on Cruise ships and went all over the world. I have been to different parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, Austrailia, South America, Central America and of course I live in North America. I have been to Hawaii, the Caribbean islands, the Phillipines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, New Zealand and I can honestly say it has given me a tremendous appreciation for other cultures and peoples around the world. The only continent I haven’t been to is Antarctica. Are there countries I haven’t been to? Sure…lots of them. But I think its safe to say that I have been to enough to give a fairly reasonable answer to this question.

First of all, I love New Zealand, and that is my answer when people ask me if I could live anywhere other than in the united states, where would I live? I would be a Kiwi! First they kinda speak english, (they say the same about Americans Ill bet, ha ha) and it is a beautiful country with a climate that is amazing. The Fjords remind me of Alaska, but, well, think Lord of the rings because that’s where it was filmed.
Anyway, that wasn’t the question. The question was where is the best country to live? And I picked the US. Is it perfect? Certainly not. But heres the thing: the US has an incredibly diverse climate. Like beaches? Live in Hawaii, Florida or along the east or west coast. Like mountains? Live near the Rocky mountains, the Grand Tetons or the Appalachians. Like cold weather? Lots of cold weather states or go live in Alaska. Or maybe you want to live on one of the US virgin islands or perhaps Puerto Rico or Guam. The US is big! In fact only two countries are larger…Russia and Canada. I have never been to Russia but Canada is very nice..but you will play hell finding warm sunny beaches in Canada. Russia has warm sandy beaches too…its called Cuba! (Kidding)
Besides climate, the US has a strong economy..well most of the time. Heres a fun fact: the US has a big economy…in fact on par with the entire EU. Pretty big, right? But we are a young country..less than 250 years old. So how did the US economy get so big so fast? Because it is an economy that rewards innovation. Think about the things we use everyday…home computers, smart phones, the internet, automobiles, personal electronics, ipods, and on and on. If it wasn’t invented in the US, it was the result of mass production that came from here…for example, the automobile was invented by Carl Benz. But Henry Ford is the man who made automobiles affordable for the masses through assembly line manufacturing.
What about Walt Disney? Warren Buffet? Bill Gates? Steve Jobs? All visionary’s. But all but one was rich before they ever got their degrees. In fact Disney and Jobs never got degrees. Gates never finished but has received honorary degrees. Buffet has an undergrad and a Masters but the only thing hanging on his was is that he was a graduate of a Dale Carnegie speaking course. Each of these men achieve dream levels of success but they became rich because of turning ideas into reality…and getting others to see their vision.
But doesn’t the US have poverty? Yes. But our poverty is not the same as other countries poverty. In some of the other countries I have been to, poverty is no food, and shelter is living under a plastic bag. In the US poverty may include food, shelter, air conditioning, a cell phone, and even medical care. I am not suggesting that its great to live in poverty…I am just saying that living in poverty here is not like poverty in Haiti, Jamaica, Thailand or many other places I have been to.
But what about the terrible gun problem. Don’t people get shot just walking down the street? Hardly ever. The US doesn’t really have a gun problem. Yes it is easy to buy a gun in the US, but guns kill relatively few people. Let me give you an example: in 2017 there were about 400 people killed with ALL rifles. To contrast that, about 1000 people a year are struck by lightning in this country. So if the odds of a person getting struck by lightning is 2.5 times as much as that of being killed with a rifle, those are pretty low odds. The media likes to report those as though it is actually quite common. It’s not.

It’s not.
But why is it the best country to live in? Because it is the easiest country to become wealthy in. Think I am making it up?
In the US, there are nearly 19,000 millionaires. The US is comfortably in first place out of the top 10. But what about the rest of the list?
Well if you took China,Japan, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Canada AND Australia and added them all together, you would have about the same number of millionaires as the United States does.
And that is just millionaires. What about the number of people who make $80,000/yr or above? Its a lot more.
You might say, money is not everything, and you are right, but the ability to earn a comfortable living is very important to living well.
Here’s something else. Having the largest Military by far, we do not get attacked very often.Living in the US, concerns about being invaded are virtually non-existent. Do you think the Europeans feel that way? In fact, the only countries that could potentially threaten us in a land war are Canada and Mexico, and both of their economies is tied to ours so not very likely.
So for its overall economic stability, unsurpassed national defense, economic climate for opportunity and diverse climate, Id have to pick the US as the best place to live.
But lots of other countries are very nice too from first hand experience.

I don't think we have only 1 best country to mention here.
Good points have been made, BUT it obviously depends on what you're looking for and the past you had with those countries.
I'm French, and I love my country, but I can totally understand why others won't like our food, our way to act, our politics or even the weather.
In each country you'll have to make compromises. For example, I agree that the Scandinavian countries (also Canada, Austria, Netherlands or Switzerland) offer one of the best living condition on earth, but I couldn't stand this cold weather and dark hours all year long. To me, sunny weather plays a lot on my mindset.
New Zealand (& Australia) is way too remote for me, even though landscapes look spectacular.

Someone mentioned Colombia as one the happiest countries in the world. I live there. So yes lots of people are, but not all of them, because poverty is well present. Plus you pay high taxes, live according to stratums, bear corruption, etc.
Singapore offers great living conditions also because economy is booming, security is high and geographically well-located. But there're so many rules for me (and life is very expensive).
When I lived in the USA (that was first a dream for me as for millions of people), I realized I was losing lots of benefits that I had in France: food, free healthcare and education, architecture, long vacation, etc.
What you would always appreciate in Europe is the diversity you get and the freedom to go from one country to another without anything else than your ID.
You need to find your own happiness. Grass will always seem greener elsewhere, but sometimes it's just not the one that suits you best.
