The Navy is preparing salvage operations for an F-35C Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter lost last week, U.S. 7th Fleet told USNI News on Monday.
“The U.S. Navy is making recovery operations arrangements for the F-35C aircraft involved in the crash aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in the South China Sea,” Cmdr. Hayley Sims told USNI News in a statement.

Though the service did not provide additional details, over the weekend the Japan Coast Guard issued a NAVAREA Navigational Warning on Saturday for salvage operations in the South China Sea.

The notice stated that salvage operations would be ongoing until further notice at the South China Sea coordinates west of the Philippines near where the fighter fell off the deck of USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) on Jan. 24. The loss of the aircraft occurred as Vinson and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) were operating in tandem in the South China Sea.

The classified technology on the F-35 has resulted in major recovery efforts made for any variant of the aircraft that is lost at sea due to fears that Russia or China would salvage the lost aircraft.

The U.K, Italy and the United States mounted a salvage operation last year for a U.K F-35B that crashed into the Mediterranean following a take-off from the carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08). Similarly in 2019, the loss of a Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) F-35A in the Pacific led to an intensive search by Japan and the U.S for the wreckage of the aircraft. It is unclear though whether the whole aircraft was recovered but the aircraft was said to have been broken into debris as it crashed into the sea at high speed unlike the other two F-35s which landed into the sea relatively intact.

Photos circulating on social media last week, which were verified by 7th Fleet, show the F-35C, assigned to the The “Argonauts” of VFA-147 Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) aboard Vinson, landed in the water right side up and largely intact before sinking.

It’s unclear what units the Navy will employ to recover the fighter, which could be in waters up to 30,000 feet deep depending on the exact location of where the fighter settled.
The Navy has one salvage ship, USNS Salvor (ARS-52), in U.S. 7th Fleet but the Navy has other salvage and recovery systems that could be installed on commercial salvage ships or offshore support vessels.

Well, one hopes they pretty much vacuum the seafloor to retrieve every part possible. I can just see a piece of the wing with the RAM coating still attached and recovered by the Chinese. As I've said in these forums before, it's not that they would be able to reverse-engineer the RAM, but rather that analyses of the material would give great insight into what radar frequencies are attenuated and to how many decibels. Like Mr. Spock said on Star Trek, though, military secrets are the most fleeting.

And that's what's going to happen, China sends AUV to grab a couple of pieces and USN gets to claim they recovered 99% of the aircraft, no diplomatic crisis, no publicity, everyone gets what they want, win win.

I think you're spot on in your observation. I suppose the Chinese could burn the sample to see what elements were in it, but that wouldn't be very helpful. Think throwing in x parts carbon and y parts water plus a few trace elements and expecting a human being to spring from all of it.

many analytical methods can be used to determine composition and structure of the coating and base material...XRD, spark spectro, thermal analysis, mass spec, all methods of spectroscopy including NMR, and ESR....ie: if they had a piece....they could pretty easily determine material and structure, the only guessing game is processes to apply.

"The classified technology on the F-35 has resulted in major recovery efforts made for any variant of the aircraft that is lost at sea due to fears that Russia or China would salvage the lost aircraft."
Is this an accurate assessment though? In March 2021 the USN "recovered a Seahawk helicopter [MH-60S] lying 3.6 miles below waters off the coast of Okinawa, breaking its depth record for recovery of sunken aircraft." No lives were lost in the Seahawk crash so it wasn't recovered in the hope of locating bodies. Does the USN not routinely try and recover all ditched aircraft?

You can still learn a lot from the pieces left after any self destruct. Not to mention the negative performance implications of carrying around extra pounds of explosives on every single flight just in case you ditch somewhere where an easy recovery isn't possible and the plane is intact.
You'd spend tens of millions of dollars developing and testing a system that is of very limited utility but has all sorts of drawbacks --- especially if it goes off when it shouldn't. Then of course comes the added cost of procuring and sustaining it throughout the life of the plane.

In the 70's we would often watch from the fantail. And my Avionics shop was on the 03 level, and the aft portion of the shop was the round down. And one day an F-14 main mount cracked our roof. Good times.

For us, fantail was off limits during recovery. The relatively few times that we worked an engine on the cell during recovery required permission from the Bridge.
