When did you stop beating your wife? That’s about as sensible a question.
It doesn’t. The UK government does make a Sovereign Grant, but this is for maintenance of the palaces that it owns anyway, and for business expenses. If you have to travel for work, you expect your employer to pay for your tickets, don’t you? The Queen is paid nothing and lives off her private investment income.
I would also point out that the government makes a profit out of it. This goes back to 1760, when King George III gave the income from the Crown Estate to the government in return for being paid expenses. The Sovereign Grant is about 15% of that income and the government keeps the rest.

The UK Government doesn’t give money to the Queen, the UK Government pays for her security and the upkeep on her residences and living expenses. The UK Government spends about 500,000 GBP on the Royal Family each year. But the Royal Estates pay taxes, and they pay about 500,000 GBP in taxes a year.
And the Government estimates that tourism to see the Royals brings in about 2 million GBP per year.
So in the end. The Royal Estates return the ‘cost’ of the Royals back and the gain from tourism benefits the entire country.

The Royal Estates don’t belong to the Royals personally. And the tourism figure is plucked from the air and can neither be proven nor disproven.

The Crown generates more money to the U.K. economy, than the U.K. spends on the Crown.
There is no issue here. The U.K. is literally making a profit.

In fact the Queen, as the other answers have said, receives back 15% of the receipts from the Crown estates as the Sovereigns Grant (used to be called The Civil List), so she is getting back a small slice of her own money, money that she has paid the Government…. and she pays income tax.
Thats fantastic for the British taxpayer - who really just covers travel and security costs.

The UK gives far too much money to the Queen every year.
People bang on about her “gifting” the revenue from the Crown Estates to the nation every year, and getting a slice of it back for official expenses. But the Crown Estates DON’T belong to her personally - they belong to the Crown, and the Crown is part of the state. Many, many things are in the name of the Crown (HM Revenue and Customs, for example). The revenues from the Crown Estates have always been used for government expenditure, they date from a time when the monarch had more of a role in government.
The Queen gets £20m a year income pocket money from the Duchy of Lancaster, and her eldest son also gets this amount from the Duchy of Cornwall. The duchies both belong to the Crown, NOT to them personally.
Why does she get so much? Simple - most people in government (and the country) are monarchist to some degree and are afraid to tamper with it, lest it should make them unpopular. The British monarchy has a strong cult of personality . They have no problem with the royals being filthy rich, while the NHS goes underfunded. Perhaps governments are also afraid of falling foul of the royals themselves, and not being invited round for that weekend at Highgrove, or that tea party at Buckingham Palace (the Queen was said to be upset at losing the royal yacht, for example).
Put simply, the British monarchy is so successful at PR and propaganda that they can demand and get anything they want from its monarchist government and population.

To fund their lifestyle and keep them in the manner to which they have become accustomed.
The UK taxpayers have given money to the monarch for centuries. It used to be called the Civil List but now it’s part of the Sovereign Grant.
The idea that the Royal Family actually gives 85% of their income to the taxpayer and only keeps 15% is a popular myth but entirely untrue. The monarch is not entitled to the revenue from the Crown Estate, that belongs to the treasury. The amount that the treasury gives to the Monarch is calculated at 15% of the Crown estate revenue, but that’s just a figure used as a calculation. It’s simply not true to say the monarch gives 85% of their income to treasury.
And the taxpayer also pays for the Royal family’s security, which is a huge expense but never revealed to the public.

We do NOT pay for the upkeep of the Royal Family. The Queen receives the Sovereign Grant which is paid for by the Crown Estates. This is excess profit from properties held by right of the Crown. These properties are places like Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and also investment properties such as shopping parks etc. Their profits are handed over to the Treasury and they give back 25% to the Queen as the Sovereign Grant. In normal years it’s only 15% but an extra 10% has been given because of restoration works to Buckingham Palace and the Frogmore Estate.
The Queen uses the Sovereign Grant to pay for official outgoings and to pay other members of the royal family who represent her on official engagements. There is NO Civil List any more… royals must work for any money from the Grant.
The Queen also receives money from other assets held by right of the Crown that belongs to the Duchy of Lancaster (she is the ‘Duke’) … these properties include buildings such as the Savoy Hotel. The income these properties generate ensures the Queen has an income. This income is voluntarily taxed.
The only other member of the royal family who receives money is the Duke of Cornwall (Prince Charles). The profit from The Duchy of Cornwall provides the heir to the throne with an income for himself and support for his family. This is voluntarily taxed. The Duchy’s estates are held by right of the Duke (the Crown if there is no male heir and the money generated is deducted from the Sovereign Grant) and not his personal possession. The Duke has ploughed a considerable amount of money back into the Duchy to provide sustainable eco and green projects as well as youth and enterprise schemes.

They don't!!
Of the surplus that the Queen earns from her firm (the Royal estates from rent and other investments), she gets some of her own money back to pay her expenses, just like any other tax paying business in the UK.
So she pays money in tax, and we all benefit from the taxes she pays, and the tourists she brings to the country, not to mention the trade deals on the back of her state banquets etc., so we're quids in on the deal.
She also gives the country stable democracy. The army are loyal to the Queen, not the government, so there is never a revolution.

There is a common misconception about tax funding in the UK and other places (it is a similar story in at least Canada and the USA too).
The median UK household income is around £65,000, but it often surprises people to know that most households with an income below £150,000 or so, pay less in tax than they cost the state. In other words, an average family does not even fully fund itself, let alone any of the royal family.
Also, without the royal family and the Crown Estate, personal income tax rates in the UK would only be higher. As many others have already pointed out, the Crown Estate revenue greatly exceeds the cost of the Sovereign Grant. The British people profit from the monarch by over £250m every year.
Given the profits from the Crown Estate, and that the Queen and other members of the royal family pay considerable income tax on their private incomes, it would be more accurate to say that the royal family helps fund the British people rather than the other way around.

Residents of the UK pay taxes - as do most other people around the world unless they live in a (oil rich) nation which does not charge residents taxes.
Paying tax in the UK contributes to the running of the country and protection of each person so they can have police service, health service etc. Tax money is collected by the government, and they then use the money to pay armed forces, build roads, upkeep prisons etc etc. Some of that money is also used to upkeep places which are owned by the nation, some of which are also used by the Royal family. The members of the Royal Family spend many hours each week doing public duties on behalf of the UK (visiting national organizations, opening new buildings, inspecting armed forces, supporting charities, speaking throughout the Commonwealth etc) and the UK government give allowance to support this work, because the Royals are working for the nation.
The Royal family have their own (personal) businesses such as farms, wineries, horse breeding, real estate, etc and some have other careers such as architect, writer, photographer, and this means they have a personal income. Some (like Prince Harry) have an inheritance or allowance from their families. They also pay tax on this income.
Some people believe that the Royal family should not be given public funds for doing the duties they do, and some do not want a monarchy at all. Most people in the UK are happy to have a monarchy, and understand the role they have in contributing to the culture, tourism and history.
It is unlikely the British Gov would refuse to make the allowance for the senior Royals, since they rely on the Queen and her family to aid the PM and other ministers, and even now the Queen receives a daily Red Box (apart from Christmas Day and Easter Sunday) to convey daily dispatches from the government to the monarch. These are important documents from her Cabinet and from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the queen to review in her role as head of state. Every week the Queen has a meeting with the current PM, to discuss state and government.

The only money “paid” to the Royal family relates to state business and the maintenance (to a limited extent) of some publicly used property for state occasions. The upkeep of all of the more private properties is paid for out of the income of the Royal family from investments, rents and so on.
However, it’s important to note that the “value” of the royal ceremonies, palaces and so on play a huge role in drawing visitors to the Uk and the income generated is calculated as being far in excess of any ‘costs’ charged to the country.

The British Government spends 500 million pounds on the Royal Family per year, but they get 500 million pounds in income tax from the Royal estates, so the Royals don’t cost the British people anything.
The Royals and their estates bring in over 2 billion pound in tourist payment to the UK every year. So besides costing the British taxpayer NOTHING, the Royals are responsible for 2 billion pounds per year in income for the UK.
If you had a group that generated over 2 billion pound in income wouldn’t you support that group es

We don’t. Why do you think we do?
The monarch used to own the Crown Estate lands and received the rent from that, and paid all their own costs out of it. In 1760, George III gave them to the government in return for a cash payment called the Civil List. This is now called the Sovereign Grant, is about 15% of the Crown Estate income ,and thus we don’t pay a bean. In fact we make a profit out of the deal which helps keep taxes down a bit.
The Sovereign Grant pays for the upkeep of the royal palaces which the government owns anyway, and for business and travel expenses which would have to be paid for anyone doing the job. If you have a president, you wouldn’t expect them to pay for travelling around the world out of their own money, do you?
Meanwhile the Queen lives off her private income as Duke of Lancaster. Thus she doesn’t need to be paid a salary. It would cost more to have a president.

Actually, the nation makes money from the royal family. This is because the monarch hands over all the revenue from the Crown Estates to the Treasury and, in return, receives a grant of 15–25%. In other words, the monarchy pays, on its key source of income, an effective tax rate of at least 75%.

In 2019 the cost of the Royal family, the wages of all the staff upkeeping the royal palaces and the maintenance of all the Royal properties, was £67million. The income the Government received that same year from the Crown Properties was £343 million and it is estimated that a further £500 million is earned from foreign tourists because we have the Monarchy. So that amounts to a profit of £776 million earned because of the Monarchy. Without the Royal family, the royal properties would still have to be staffed and maintained and we would probably lose the tourism boost. Remove the Monarch as Head of State and the UK would need a President. France’s President costs the French people around £80 million per year. Economically the Monarchy is a damned good deal.
