Self-centered people struggle to understand that to become valuable in life we must give — not take.
Nobody likes working around takers. We avoid takers. The world is full of takers, We enjoy being around givers. Whenever we receive, we’re more likely to happily give back or pay.
In our jobs and in life, the more value we give to others, the more we get paid or appreciated. Success in life is a result of the value we deliver, not of what we feel we deserve.
Selfish people (takers) frequently measure what they give, so they’re instinctively limiting the value they give to the world — this will eventually lead them to failure.
If Luigi’s actions are intended to benefit him, he’s not really giving, he’s manipulating. Giving takes courage and risk.
It takes time to become valuable.
Stop chasing success — instead invest your time and effort in becoming a person of value.

Once I participated in a poem recitation competition in school.
This was my first time and there was no one to guide me. (Thank you ma'am)

After the competition was over, some of my classmates sitting in audiences made fun of me.
I showed them my participation certificate and said I am happy that at least I tried today for the first time.

To gain confidence to actually perform and try further and not just build castles in mind.

Why? Because everyone else in your field will do exactly the same thing too. They will dedicate their entire life to the pursuit of excellence. And if you work, really really really hard, you will achieve the grand height of being average!
That’s reality.
Success begins with realistically understanding what you can achieve and what you cannot. If you start with wishful thinking, you will fail.

If your goal is to make money, don’t go into the field where the average will not make much money - including being an actor . singer, athletes or writer. That is a winner takes all industry. You either become millionaire or ends up broke, and the odds is against you because unless you are the “best” in the field, you are worthless. Will people choose to spend $0.99 on best song on itunes which they can listen forever, or pay you $10 to listen to you sing once on the street?
To the people who said “chase your dream, you only live once”. Ask them “will you support me financially when I inevitably becomes the 99.99% of the failure statistics in this industry?”. If the answer is “no”, then fuck them.

local monopolies industries - CHOOSE
The 2nd best doctor will have a job in different hospital. The 100th best doctor will have a job in different city. Same with accountant, architects, teachers (so far anyway, MOOC may change that) , bus driver, etc. They have what economists call local monopoly. Yes they are not as good as the best, but the best can only serve limited number of people. So best doctors get best hospital, best teachers get best university, but they won’t get 100% of the customers (patients, students).
Those who mock you for having “an average life” are either assholes who got lucky with their high risk ventures, or kids who grew up listening to bullshit like “do what you love, live the life of your dream”.
It’s your life. Don’t go broke chasing your dream.
Unique Snowflake Syndrome and Talent mindset:
When someone is better than you, 99% of the time, they would have worked for much harder, for much longer, with methods that are much more effective and efficient for them than you had. That’s it. Period.
And I said better. I don’t include “richer” in this statistics. I will explain later why wealth is not bound by the law of averages.

What one person can do, another can imitate (except for the 1% genetic difference between human, you can’t change your gender, you can’t change your height, you can change a lot of your physical attributes); but in matter of the brain, most the neuroplasticity of the brain ensures that neurons that fire together wire together. You use it, or you lose it.

So stop thinking that you are special, or that someone else is special. If they are, they are the lucky 2.1%. SO WHAT? you don’t have to beat them to be successful (unless you’re dumb enough to ignore my first advice above and compete in winner takes all industries).
You just have to be better than yourself of yesterday!

Methods before effort
If you are not doing as well as other people, the best method is just copy what they do and see if that works better for you. Ask them how. Hire teachers to show you. If you want to succeed, you need to know what works for most people. If getting better does not require money to hire coaches and shamelessness to beg for help, everyone would be better.
Research shows that you can spend a lifetime playing chess and does not improve at all, but if you study past grandmasters’ games, you are more likely to improve.
Improvement requires deliberate practice. “playing” does not count. Best violinists tend to play harder songs, and their coaches pick up more errors and fix them. Average violinists tend to play simpler songs, they don’t like to fail, and no one fixed their errors on harder songs.
Merely playing chess does not make you better at it. Imitating the best at chess (and then at higher level, trying to understand why they make that choice) is the fastest method to improve… at least according to the scientific study conducted on chess players.

So METHOD BEFORE EFFORT. Doing a million of time of what do not work is worthless. Doing a thousand time of what work instead.
Another example I like to use is bodybuilding. People who are never interested in that subject would think that all you need to build muscles is to lift weights. That’s not true.
If all you need is lift weight, then bricklayers would be the biggest person on the planet. They would have lifted more weight for the entire life than bodybuilders.
But bodybuilding is not about the total weight. It is about understanding the concept of muscle hypertrophy: the only way to force your muscle to grow bigger is by breaking it down with excessive weight (but not too much to do permanent damage) and then rebuilding it with protein and rest.
IF YOU ARE NOT IMPROVING AT ALL, THAT’S PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU ARE USING THE WRONG METHOD OF TRAINING!

Why money is not bound by law of averages
When it comes to money, there is no limit.

That’s bullshit. Making money is difficult. What you need is more than merely being good. It requires you to be very lucky.
I saw first hand successful entrepreneurs who achieved great success, tried to repeat their success formula, and found that despite doing exactly the same thing, they failed miserably on their second try.
Why? Because in the world of business, the market changes. The opportunity which was there before, is no longer there. Barriers of entry are changing and shifting, competitors, suppliers and customers are changing. The world is moving and you can’t repeat the same thing twice unless you got really lucky.
In this world, winners take all, and you’re only as good as how bad your competitors are.
But lets’ go back to why it does not follow law of average: because of leverage.

Bill Gates has the leverage of OPT and OPM (Other people’s time and Other people’s money). 70% of Microsoft is owned by other people, who paid to buy the shares. It is run by 60,000+ employees who worked many hours per year to make Bill and other shareholders richer. Gates have leverage of other people’s time and money. But he also has to be the best, or his competitors will destroy Microsoft.

Why do you lose? You are competing in the wrong industry where you either have to be the best, or the industry is too poor to support average people. We can also replace industry with country here. Average North American earns 20x average African. You can both be bus drivers of identical skills and live a totally different lives due to where you were working.
Why do you lose? You think you are special. You think someone else is special. You are refusing to accept that we are all mostly identical except in our effort, time and dedication, and methods.
Why do you lose? You use the wrong methods of practice. You don’t know the right methods and you can’t hire coaches who can show you the right methods and provide feedback loop. You are too proud to grovel and beg for help from your better colleagues to learn their methods. Getting better is not cheap or easy.
Why do some people have unlimited wealth? Because they are the best in the world, or the luckiest, to be able to win in an industry where winners takes all. Those are the lucky few, for every Tom Cruise, there are millions of failed actors. For every J.K Rowling , there are a millions of failed writers.
Don’t get fooled by survivor bias and get conned by snake oil salesman who will sell you “21 steps to wealth”. But here are the steps to be awesomely average: 1. Choose the right industry and country where the average workers are doing well. 2. Work your ass off. You are not special. You have to earn every single step on your way to be average. 3. Learn the correct methods to improve. 4. Don’t envy the winners take all champions. They are just distractions.
