Study Stoicism, learn from it. It will show your everything you need to know and why you should do what your trying to do. We are not meant for all this mental stimulation. Breaks from it will be great for your mental health.

Roger S Johnson, I got out from under depression, about sixty years of it.
I have an example that works for me: I had smoked a pipe for fifty years, knew for decades that it was poisonous, but continued in my addiction. One morning I decided to put off the first pipe of the day for twenty minutes, putting off any delight for twenty minutes is something I can do. I next looked at the clock and saw that the twenty minutes had passed, and fifteen more. I continue with just the twenty minute goal; that was eighteen years ago, I have not smoked once.
If I had said to myself that I’ll never smoke again I’d be setting up a failure, giving in just once would show that. Make your goal small enough that you can easily meet it, and walk the next step after that.

As my experience, I think phone is a tool for me, not heaven or honey.
How to use phone is a question. What I can do with it.
check date, time ,weather, get such as basic informations.
communication, individual messages and calls, social medias.
entertainment, play games , listen to music.
consumption. Order taxi, food, clothes or shopping, and payfor them.
production, take photos, make recorders or music, write.
Etc.
Instead of stopping using phone, I asked myself, what about my life, my career, health, relationship, finance, study. What am I want to do in my life. Then I think phone would be a tool to my destination.
I am an English learner, would you please help to correct my English writing in this answer. Thanks.

Hello , great question .
So you do realize that you have a habit which is probably already harmful for you .
It could be harmful in many ways -
disrupts your attention
do not let you concentrate on what you should do in the moment
take too much time
or even leading to bad posture and neck pain etc.
This bad habit has slowly grown , taking your head completely off from what is important for you. You are just “killing time” . The problem is this is YOUR time.
The way you could reduce the impact of this bad habit is to have a goal in your life . You need to decide what do you want in your life , and start chasing your dreams . / no matter what your bad habits are this is the remedy /
You can not even imagine , how many bad habits were left behind that way . And there is no matter if it’s your phone or whatever… do not focus on that - it is completely pointless . Now is your phone , tomorrow could be something else . The problem is you do not respect your time .
You need a goal , a dream that you will follow , something that will make you understand that you have one life , starting to respect and appreciate your time .
Best Regards

First and foremost what do you use the phone for, talking to people, texting, using the internet, or something else. the way to get rid of a fixation on anything is understanding what the cause is, using the phone is this the symptom, but it's not the cause.

I have given this question much thought as it applies to my life. Unfortunately I must use my phone for my current job, however when I am finally able to not need a phne for work I plan to get a flip phone that only can be used for making and receiving phone calls

I charge mine in another room and it's out of mind out of site.
Quite quickly I find myself doing other things and have sometimes completely forgotten about it for hours.
Turning down or off the ring tone and sound effects also helps so I'm not tempted to go check it at every ping.
I never take my phone to bed with me and turn it off while I'm asleep too, the messages and media will still be there when you turn it back on.
Just like before mobile phones if there is an emergency people will always find another way to let you know.

You can easily get busy with your friends, books or hobby
Reading an interesting book can be really useful and a great time pass you can even learn a new language..
As for your hobby try and find what makes you happy sports, hkinking, drawings, cooking etc… and work on it your hobby can turns out to be a lot more helpful then you might think .
Find friends whom they enjoy sitting together talking and sharing thoughts, jokes and beneficial ideas away from social media fake life .

THat is the question of the youth today, maybe it’s about stepping back to a time where you had to fiscally go to a person's house to have a conversation it is to easy to grab your phone and call text among other ways try actually talking face to face and go out of your way to do so you will find the connection you have with real people is good for moral and saves your battery life too

You leave it at home sitting on your coffee table OR you don't switch it on at all. Works for me but then I hate mobile phones. I'm not saying that they're not useful but when people have them superglued to their hands & can't even walk around a supermarket without having then stuck to their ears, it's just too much. They walk along the pavement, phone glued to their ears & then suddenly stop right in front of you, & you having no warning walk straight into them. If you really want to stop using your phone them it's m?mind over matter, you just stop using it. It's bit like giving up smoking, you just have do it. I stopped smoking 9 years ago, no gum, no patches, I just stopped & now I've turned into one those people who can't stand smoke or smokers. It smells horrible, makes your clothes smell horrible so pretend you mobile phone is a packet of cigarettes & just leave it alone!

My phone is my ears! I am deaf so I use it to take voices and turn to text. I read lips. But gosh it sure is hard going through McDonald's drive-through. Think of your phone as a tool. How much do you actually need it. Start to thinking are you missing out on other things? I often notice people using their phone and not looking around. When I'm talking to people they don't look at me I can't read their lips, I have to ask them can you put your phone down I can't see your lips. I know that phone is not a necessity. They miss what's around them. They miss what they can't hear. The birds, the The chatter, so much I miss.

Terri68,I was born at night, but not last night.
Set a timer for a reasonable time. When it goes off. Put the phone down. Get a task or 2 done. But follow the timer. If I felt overwhelmed in general, I would set a timer for 25 or 30 mins. Sit and do NOTHING (meditate or simply relax), no I didn't use the phone lol. Once that timer went off- I did the task I had in mind. Cleaning up a closet or putting the laundry away or vacuuming or taking the garbage out. It really worked. I don't need it anymore but there was a time my mind would race, and get overwhelmed and nothing got done. At least if you try it, either it will work or it won't.
