I used to work a 12 hour shift system, but had a maximum of four days at work. It was work, sleep, eat for four days, but the extra days off were great and it was by far the best shift pattern I worked.
It depends on the work, your commute and so on, but four ten hours days could be a lot better than five eight hour days.

Yeah, I've done that before Four 10 hour days - But I think the proposal is for a 32 hour work week, according to the article.
I think the name "Four Day Week" is just a way to explain a equivalent pro-rata decrease in work, regardless of how many "days" it falls over.

For standard office jobs it makes perfect sense, you can make efficiencies and achieve the same amount of work in less time. But then how do you justify the effective 20% pay rise the professional services get to the people who still have to do the same hours for the same pay?
Take the NHS for example, when their accountants, HR and other back office staff get an effective 20% pay rise, how do you justify that to the nurses and doctors when they get nothing extra?
There’s also the economic impacts to consider, which would don’t seem to have been considered yet. Would schools drop down to four days a week and if so, how would that impact our education? Everyone suddenly has an extra day but no extra money to do anything with? Businesses relying on commuters suddenly lose a fifth of their income. There’s actually history of reductions in working hours which we could look at though, it hasn’t always been 37 hours here, it also comes up a lot when you look at the issues Germany faced in the 30s as well. It would actually be a pretty monumental change when you think about it and it’s well worth considering all of the impacts before anything’s ever rolled out wider.
I’d absolutely love it, but I can see why there is resistance. The whole idea would be incredible, and maybe I’m just too sceptical, but “same pay for less hours” feels a bit dreamlike.

It really depends on how widespread it goes. The schools in my area are talking about it apparently. And with my wife being a teacher that's fine, but if workplaces don't follow suit, people are going to find themselves in sudden need of childcare which they may struggle to find if they can afford it even.
It's a nice idea and I'd be behind it but I'd need to see how it'd work rolling out.
Also, as long as I stay on my current salary that's fine. But taking a 20% paycut isn't an option.

Our place used to give us every 2nd friday off, during the lockdowns. It was heaven. Especially in the spring, when all the bank holidays clumped together.
At home, everything was neat and tidy. Meals were cooked and frozen. I had so much more time to indulge hobbies.
Unfortunately I think too many bosses think their staff having time off is the downfall of society. They'll fight it all the way.

Depends on how it's implemented. If we're talking going down to a 32hr work week (i.e. 4x 8hr days) with no reduction in pay, that would be huge. I could have a day to sort chores and household stuff out, a dya for fun activities and a day to actually relax and recharge, rather than having to squeeze everything into 2 days.
If pay is being reduced however, I'll stick with 5 days.
If we're talking 40hrs over 4 days, so 4x 10hr days.. No thank you. I like being done with my day by 4pm and having a nice long afternoon/evening to be able to get the daily life stuff done. I know when I have done longer days at work, it's exhausting. Between work, cooking dinner, regular exercise and other general daily tasks, I just don't feel I have any time to stop or relax or do anything fun - it's just work, eat, tidy up, sleep. The additional day off wouldn't make up for that the rest of the week, in my opinion.

The additional day off wouldn't make up for that the rest of the week, in my opinion.

Assuming it's the same amount of work squashed in to four days, then it would depend on if I could work from home or not.
If I had to go in to the office, then no way. I have to leave pretty early as it is, so adding in an extra couple of hours would mean I'd be leaving really early or staying late. That would get exhausting.
If I could work from home then it would be a lot better. Without the need to commute, I could fit in the extra hours and still have a relatively normal length day.

I'd definitely make an extra day useful, but mainly, I'd be able to get on with some editing work (photos and videos) my own stuff AND freelance stuff.
Editing, at least for me is not something I can dedicate an hour here or there each day, I have to do it in longer chunks, fully focused. I find it's not something I can sit down to do after working a full day at work when I'm already mentally tired, and when I HAVE tried to do it after work, I often get on a roll and go overboard and end up going to bed way too late and feeling awful the next day.

I work a 4-day week, my company is doing a trial of it. From the data so far (which admittedly is only six weeks’ worth) productivity has gone up in some places and staff sickness has decreased.
I’m hugely grateful for it. I’m disabled and part of the way my body fucks me over is to make me ill for a much longer time than a healthy person. Twice since January I’ve struggled through a week, felt like death on Thursday, slept through Friday morning and woken up feeling okay again.

4 day working week is the goal for both myself and my partner when we have a child in about 3 years. With my mother providing 1 day of childcare, that would mean the child only having to be in daycare 2 days week, which is very appealing.
I'd love for our companies to switch to a 4 day week before then, as obviously losing 20% of our salary isn't the most appealing.
I really don't know what I would do with an extra weekend day in the mean time, especially if my partner didn't have the same day off. I'd definitely go swimming for an hour or two, but not sure what I would do with the other 6-8 hours on my own.

It would be amazing to me. One of my biggest struggles in life is not being able to do what I call 'life admin' because literally everything is only open while I'm at work (or for only a tiny short window before/after work begins or ends meaning you still can't get to it on time). If I had say Tuesdays off each week, it would be awesome for making sure I can arrange health appointments conveniently as well as, when I'm not in appointments, have a day to clean the house or do basic shit, leaving my weekends free.
I'm seriously hoping my workplace decide to try this out, however, the higher ups still treat us like it's the stone age so I don't have much hope.

I actually work a four day week! I can do optional over time on Fridays or Sundays. But I dont usually do it unless I have upcoming expenses. But tbh it's the best. I use my Friday to get all the jobs done round the house and keep on top of everything. My weekends actually feel like weekends and I can rest I'm not just packing in everything I don't have time to do in the week. My partner works five days a week and has long hours. If we both did that things could get pretty chaotic. With stuff not getting done. The 5 day week is such an outdated concept.

It would make putting up with the sh** I do worth it because I’d have a day of freedom to be happy. Whole weekend gets lost to chores and stuff. But I work for task masters who spent the last few months joking about the study saying they’d ignore the findings unless the findings were it didn’t work

Switched to four days a week a few years ago. It's obviously better because you have more free time but it's not actually that different. It's having to work for a living at all that's the problem, not so much how much time we have to spend doing it. Here's to the zero day week!
