What’s unique about Sudan where 16,000 Americans are living? And now left behind?

The majority of that 16,000 are people who were born in Sudan to American parents and are thus US citizens. They live in Sudan. They won't be leaving because they have no where else to go.

There's also probably going to be about 10,000-20,000 Americans in any country (with some obvious exceptions) just because there's a lot of Americans and America gets involved in almost every country in the world in one way or another.

You do realise America has a population of 340 million right? 16,000 is basically nothing. Americans live all over the world doing all sorts of things.

You realize that outside of India and China the US has the largest global population, right? Like the only place I can think of where you probably won’t run into any pesky gringos is North Korea. Still plenty of “Americans” in Syria for example. I put Americans in “” as many of the US citizens in “off the beaten path” counties are people who may have never been to, or even have a large desire to come to the US as they are Americans born in those countries to an American citizen parent (quite often military or expat working corp).

America had 21 defectors to North Korea. Not sure how many of them are still alive or eventually sought a return to US soil.

I work in humanitarian aid and international development. I'd guess a large part of that 16,000 is from this line of work. The org I work for now is trying desperately to evacuate American staff with little luck. But yeah, I also wonder how there can be 16,000 even with aid and development considered.

Can someone give me the TLDR on the origin of this conflict?
To the best of my knowledge, it is a para-military force that is challenging the state military (which deposed the dictator in a military coup in 2019).
Is it literally a military power struggle, or are there political, ethnic, ideology differences that are the root cause?

From what I understand, the paramilitary group and state military were allied after deposing a dictator together. However since then, in an attempt to transition to proper elections and a civilian government, the generals of the two groups began fighting over who would have more power over who when absorbed in to the state military under the new civilian government. Hence the current situation, I suppose their petty general status over a vagabond group of mercs was more important than actually building a stable society for their kids….. idk.

Many such cases, all throughout history.

I read that the dictator created the RSF and intentionally pitted them against the regular army, thinking that would keep him safe from a military coup. It worked for awhile. Then it didn’t.

A large part of the conflict is a proxy war between Egypt and the Suadi's over control of this whole area of Africa. The "governement" powers are backed by Egpyt and the RSF are backed by the Saudi's. RSF have been mercenary forces for Saudi's in the Yemen conflict for many years.

Adding to this; Sudan is like 3x the size of Texas and has 45 million people

Obviously charities help people, but they assume roles that should be performed by the state. The state never develops the requisite organs, and the people never witness the state helping them.
I am not suggesting a conspiracy, but charities stunt development and freeze conflicts far more effectively than the CIA ever could.

comradeMATE
Who says that should be a role performed by the state? If charities help, they help.

BackRowRumour
It's not immediately obvious, but states cohere partly because of a compact of benefits. If the state only takes, while charities give, the bond weakens. This is not a purely theoretical problem. Weak states are frequently lawless and corrupt. So, also the ones charities flock to.

SokrinTheGaulish
The State should have responsibility to provide services such as health and education. When this is done by the ONG’s the state is not held accountable for such things, it weakens the social contract and makes for corrupt governments.
Finally, the State also never ends up developing those services and stays in this status quo of unsustainable reliance on foreign aid.

Clearly there are tens of thousands of Europeans forming a minority community in the country.
That actually reminds me of the Hungarian Sudanese who've actually been there for several centuries. They're very intermixed now though.

The woman's support for her sister-in-law is commendable however U.S. citizens have a responsibility to heed official warnings and advisories to avoid or evacuate a foreign country as conflicts arise. Common sense dictates one plan for these contingencies.
