I'm Chinese and if they interviewed me I'd say Thailand or maybe Cambodia, I've always had an interest in the cultures and languages of SE Asia cause they are very exotic, exquisite, and peaceful, and I can see certain resemblances between their cultures/languages and the ones of some South Chinese ethnic minorities like Zhuang, Dai, which I also greatly appreciate.

I'm thai and before Covid, i travel to japan since i was 10 for 15 years every year bc it's really cheap. there are low-cost airlines, my favorite hotel + airfare cost only about 800 USD for 3 days, and it's a good hotel near the train station too.

Two different packs of people. Those who focus more on politics will despise Japan. Those who watch your cartoons are attracted to you, unaware of your attitude towards them.
Oversimplification but basically this.
这是两群不同的人。那些更关注政治的人将会鄙视日本。那些看你动画片的人被你吸引，却没有意识到你对他们的态度。
所以过于简单化了，但基本上是这样。

Maybe u need to ask if they have ever travelled out of China first before posing the question
