Why is India so dirty compared to countries like Sri Lanka? Is there something wrong with the habits of Indians? Aren’t Indians and Sri Lankans culturally similar?

When I visited India for the first time, I was shocked. As a Sri Lankan I know well that in Indian culture they value cleanliness. But I was amazed by their culture and the reality of India.I don't know what caused this situation, but I thought overpopulation might be the cause. But compared to the cities that thought is a plausible argument and the small villages were also found to be very dirty. There I realized that Indians do not consider it their social responsibility to keep their surroundings clean.

When I saw that Tokyo, the world's largest city with the largest population in a very small area, was clean, I realized that population density is also an unacceptable argument for a country to be dirty.If we talk about Sri Lanka, the cleanest environment in Sri Lanka is maintained in the smallest villages. Efforts are made to maintain a high level of cleanliness in major cities. The condition of these intermediate cities should be further improved. But the cleanliness is getting better because every city is making rules and trying to keep it competitively clean, but next time I visited India I saw that the dirty environment is maintained the same.

One should practice disposing of one's own garbage properly and not throwing it away as other people's garbage. Any country that works in this way will definitely be a clean country.

Yes from my recent many travels, I think it is laziness. People think picking litter, cleaning your own home, cleaning your own toilet, is beneath you. Kitchen work is beneath you. Carrying the rubbish to the bin is below your status. Cars are rarely cleaned by their owners. In the west, we do all the above, even professionals like doctors, lawyers etc. Perhaps very few, extremely wealthy, may not but most of us do everything. Even Royal family members make their own tea!

Cannot blame govt for that. People in general have bad habits and they always want to blame others and govt in general for everything wrong with the country and their own lives They just like to watch patriotic movies but hardly care for their country and consider it their freedom to litter. I dread going there as if someone put me in a cage. Sorry truth hurts but seen my own family and relatives throwing trash freely outside the bin even if a large trash can was available, my brother in law who was in Defence Force that time and when we pointed out we were mocked. Sorry have lost even sympathy for such people

Do people still bathe in Gangi river

Tokyo— no garbage, no garbage cans either. Everyone is responsible for their own stuff.

@Prateek Parmar
Low trust society. Simple as that. Even lower trust than Sri Lanka.

@Kevin Ashley
I have seen my own friends throw trash from their car, it's absolutely sad and disappointing that they even fail to realise the concept of cleanliness on the street, But want their homes to be clean.

One should know that India is a diverse country with not only diverse cultures but also economically different too. Those who are economically well off study and look good behave good etc. the other half who are not economically well, cannot afford to study,lack civic sense and these are the ones who doesn’t bother about cleanliness. Normally in other countries, almost everyone is similar in every aspect. But in India, due to diverse conditions these things happen.

@Indrajit Ghatak
The concept of cleanliness is gradually developing in India. Lack of proper garbage disposal system in most of the cities and lack of effiency in most of the municipalities create such dirtiness around such cities, however the lack of hyginic sense among the majority percentage of population is perhaps the most important factor which will change with the upgradation of education level. In Sri lanka perhaps Buddhism have made a long lasting impact on the genuine behavior pattern of Sri Lankans

@Kondoor Aravind
You have highlighted a bitter truth. The habit of cleanliness shall be cultivated right from the school curriculum. It can be emphasized by social media and in public places like Bus stand and railway stations. The local self-government bodies can do a lot.

@Rakesh Mehrotra
Every society has a value system . In India, culturally cleanliness is equated to Lakshmi. However, cleanliness in public places is only govt job

@Vivek Braganza
We Indians value cleanliness, but mainly inside our houses. We value our long civilisation, but can't be bothered to keep Mother India clean. Good to see the Govt focussed on clean India - otherwise only hope can save us.

Thank you all who have commented. Atleast we accept our shortfall. That's a great step..
