Apart from finding another large market, Elon was looking at the current political climate, as the General election has just started. Though, Modi “guarantees” 400-seats, field reports sent from embassies must have been different. Musk do not want to lose the chance of fruitful discussions on the one who will form the next government. Therefore he has “postponed” his business trip to later this year.
Another reason is the recent indication by Modi on his speech about China. He was positive about working with China in the next term. If Chinese Automakers enters India within next five years, India becomes another tough competition ground for Tesla and Elon may not want that to happen.

India is not a monolithic market. There are varying levels of income and wealth, and a lot of Indians are spending many times more than 35000 dollars on their cars. If you go to a city like say, Dibrugarh, with a population barely crossing 150000 residents, you can find dozens of cars worth more than 35000 dollars on the streets. In larger cities, the numbers are much, much higher. And on a pan-India level, that market is large enough to be commercially viable for a 35000 dollar car.
So affordability is not the problem. Quality is. All Indians are not poor.

He is suggesting that we manufacture our own products and build our own brands like China. If your engineers and designers can't even build a bullock cart or horse carriage, buying a foreign brand will not make India a developed nation. China has its own brand called Hongqi and Russia has Aurus to rival Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Maybach in the luxury segment. These are the state cars of China and Russia. Tata owns Jaguar and Land Rover so it can also build a luxury brand. Indians should buy the automobile because of its superior quality and not just patriotism. It will be a proud day for India when our VIPs like the President and the Prime Minister travel in an Indian brand rather than foreign made cars.

They will have to carry a generator in the dickey plugged to the butt hole to charge the cars. At the most EVs can compete with autos. They are commute cars. If you turn the AC or heater on it is a airconditioned auto rickshaw. Its range falls down. No business man will buy a car to drive a few hundred miles and park to charge for several hours.

Total number of luxury cars ( Mercedes, BMW, audi etc ) sold in India in a year is around 30 thousand . India market for costly cars is not big . Tesla will not manage in any case to sell more than 10 thousand cars a year . Another calculation why they don't want to set up factory in India .

One major point is even if Tesla sets up manufacturing unit in India and starts selling Indian made Tesla cars, then who would buy them?
Only the upper middle class or rich class would buy that but that market is already filled with famous brands like Mercedes, Land Rover, Audi, BMW etc.
Second issue is charging stations, there are few charging stations in 99% of cities in India.

Most are concerned about the economics of it making the car just an urban car driven strictly within city limits. The number ol sold cars will be fewer owing to it's high price and therefore not feasible to set up charging stations all over the country.

Elon knows it's election time so govt has other priorities, any discussion won't be fruitful now
All luxury businesses have done fantastic business in India since COVID, refer to the sales of ultra luxury items. $35K is peanuts for many in India.
Tesla is going to reduce prices even more as the main point is about collecting data
Alluding to the earlier point, the main interest Elon has in India is live data for training. You don't get Cows on the street in China for example.
This all converges to FSD rollout and robotaxi next year.

Even if by some miracle they do succeed, how will he ensure market reach? Bcoz it'll not be economically viable to set up so many charging stations. Also, although I'm not an EVS owner, I believe that especially in metros, the traffic jams may just spell the doom of the EVS. Cheers。

China has a land area three times that of India and the population is the same. So, the population density of India is 3 times that of China. If India legalizes the Right to Die and Assisted Suicide and reduces its population to 1 crore, it can surpass Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein in terms of per capita income and the Scandinavian countries in Human Development Index HDI rankings. It is the poor people, who reproduce like animals and depend on freebies from the Government, that are the biggest drain on our economy. Land acquisition becomes a big issue. If you vacate slums like Dharavi, you will improve the skyline of the city, get the land to build the world's largest Gigafactories in India and enough human compost from the dead bodies to replace fertilizer imports for agriculture for several years. Less number of mouths to feed means that even if we reduce the land area under cultivation, we will have enough crops. You can plant forests on 33% of the land area to act as the lungs for our planet ecological balance.

I feel you are right in many aspects related to India. But your knowledge on Tesla and the innovation capability it posses seems to be limited, mainly derived from media. You should just look at Tesla financials and compare net margins with BYD for EVs.
I believe India would gain a lot from Tesla, even more when compared to Chinese EV companies.

When you have a company valued at 500 Billion Bucks against an Asset base of 1/41
That's definitely a massive bubble without crucial core technology
And unless musk is hiding a hydro engine that can give you 100,000 kms without needing a recharge, that's not there anymore

Even in metros the CS will face other challenges as well such as long queues for the limited number of stations & docks and the rich clients not willing to wait as the level 3 superchargers take around 30/40 mins for a 80% charge. Too much hassles after paying so much money.

I drive a Tesla, rented BYD while I was in Europe, I can tell you BYD is no where closer to Tesla’s performance! If Tesla says 40% SOC at destination, its either 39% or 40% but BYD isn’t. Ofcourse, interiors are much cooler in BYD but having to rely on third party chargers is again a big NO. Tesla’s moat is their software and charging infrastructure… There are multiple companies trying to manufacture battery raw materials by recycling old batteries, what do you think of them? Will it ease battery supply chain in North America and reduce the cost of batteries?
