A Connecticut honors student is suing her school district, saying she is illiterate.
Despite graduating from Hartford Public High School in June with honors and getting a scholarship to the University of Connecticut, Aleysha Ortiz is claiming she cannot read or write.
The 19-year-old, who spent 12 years in the Hartford public school district, testified at a May city council meeting, explaining her unique situation and how the educational system failed her.

“I decided, they [the school] had 12 years,” Ortiz, a native of Puerto Rico, told CNN. “Now it’s my time.”
Ortiz is suing the Hartford Board of Education, the City of Hartford and her special education case manager, Tilda Santiago, for negligence.
According to her lawsuit, she began having problems with “letter, sound and number recognition” as early as first grade, and because those issues were not addressed, she began acting out in school.

“I was the bad child,” she told the outlet.
When she was in 6th grade, she was reading at a mere kindergarten or first-grade level, Ortiz alleges.
When Ortiz was a sophomore at Hartford Public High School, Santiago was assigned as her special education teacher and case manager.
Santiago bullied, harassed and stalked Ortiz, and was later removed from the role, the suit claims.
Although she hardly speaks English, Ortiz’s mother, Carmen Cruz, did her best to advocate for her daughter, speaking to the principal and other school officials.
“I didn’t know English very well, I didn’t know the rules of the schools,” she told the outlet.

“There were a lot of things that they would tell me, and I let myself go by what the teachers would tell me because I didn’t understand anything.”
By the 11th grade, Ortiz began taking matters into her own hands and started speaking up for herself, which led her teachers to suggest she get tested for dyslexia.
Just one month before graduation, she began receiving the testing, which was not completed until the last day of high school, the lawsuit states.

The testing concluded that Ortiz was in fact dyslexic and “required explicitly taught phonics, fluency and reading comprehension.”
School district officials told Ortiz she could defer accepting her diploma and receive intensive services, she alleges.
“While Hartford Public Schools cannot comment on pending litigation, we remain deeply committed to meeting the full range of needs our students bring with them when they enter our schools —

Ortiz, who dreams of becoming a writer, is currently attending the University Connecticut as a full-time student, although she hasn’t been to classes since Feb. 1 in order to get mental health treatment.
To complete her college assignments, she is relying on apps that translate text to speech and speech to text, as she did in high school.
The apps gave “me a voice that I never thought I had,” she said.

A long long time ago I read an article describing the differences between the American and Japanese education systems. Tons of small differences, but the main distinction was in Japan they blame the parents for poor grades, and in America they blame the teachers.
There’s a bunch of reasons our kids are failing behind in education. OUR CULTURE is failing our kids. We look for someone to blame rather than taking some personal responsibility to overcome whatever obstacles are in front of us.
Hope the judge drop kicks this one.

I agree but want to add that I have 30 teachers in the NYC school system, from the 1950s' until present day. I taught for one semester at PS59. My mom, cousins, aunts uncles were all teachers. Back in those days, parent, teacher nights at the school were standing room only with concerned parents. Today, parents do no attend or are interested in their children except in the better communities.
In the school districts with high crime, and they are all other the trick-state area, the studenyts, even in the lower grades are bullies and thugs that prey on the weak kids and school officials turn their back on what they are seeing.
Another big reason schools are not educating students is the curriculum,
which is determined by the state and nearly all the time teach anti-American lies, lower the standards for math and science and English is a second language. Science is taught has the world is going to end, common core is confusing and not accurate.

The difference is in public school, for special education, the school is supposed to test students not achieving at grade level, for learning disabilities. She should have has family advocating for her, but she also should have been tested in elementary school, and likely was in big classes and turning in assignments that allowed her to get by, with no one caring enough to insist on more help.

Our culture is killing this country. Look at parents roles these days. There is no common sense as in the old days, imperfect as they were. People having too many kids that they can’t afford now becomes the burden of us all. I could go on and on but it’s all too exhausting to go on

It's not that she can't SPEAK the language or understand the spoken word. The ed. system just passed her through without ever being able to read and write English. But the true issue is she is an ML student.
As a SPED teacher, how the student hears and applies phonics is solely based on their native language and how the student can grow their phonics and phonological awareness.

Yes, my grands/great grands spoke Polish but I had English speaking parents so did ok. Sounds like this gal maybe lived in an area that was all Spanish speaking immigrants and had no mentor to follow.

No she had a learning disability and the teachers didn't care and passed her anywY

She has dyslexia. She sees some letters and numbers backwards. Her mother had problems learning English.

Right, but once she starts suing, she can read the numbers perfectly. She needs to grow up.

Because her daughter had a learning disability that the teachers didn't help with but passed her anyway ? Explain how that's the mothers fault

Mom lives in America. There are plenty of free programs where she could've learned English. Her laziness and willingness to let other people be in charge of her daughter led to this.

I live in CT and worked for DCF and the attorney general child protection so I know for a fact that tho happens all the time! This child is brave to step up and tell the truth! And if you can’t speak English you shouldn’t be here unless they can speak English

I am a state university professor and we see this all the time. It is very common and it comes from social promotion. They simply waved her through k-12 and at UConn. She could graduate with honors if she majors in victim studies and then she could easily get into law school and get waved through there as well.

100% true! I'm an immigrant, moved to the states back in the 8o's. And I experienced the same thing. I don't think I ever passed a math test in high school, or did any homework, But I always got through the next grade. They just let anyone graduate.

I hope the school system gets privatized. Private schools are just as good, if not better, at 50% of the costs.

Still she sounds like she had learning differences and wants to sue somebody. GET A GRIP it's called life dear and it ain't always fair! I went to the best private school and they didnt have a clue how to help me w my issues.

These types are always looking to blame others for their own poor choices- do you think she actually tried to remedy the problem? No she probably hung out with her stòópid friends doing dumb stuff
