So everything that the US does the Russian and Chinese know everything. That should scare you.

@outabout8125
Please do that, you will just make China more advanced in their science and technology

@celxoirealyx
What your media told you: They steal from us! What actually happened: Our gov pay them to make toys for us. They went home with said toys and its research papers.

The other problem is the educational program of the U.S in which we are not competitive in the global market anymore. We do not rank even in the top 10 but we are around number 40. The agencies want the best, and the educational systems that produce the best hires in the stem field, are those that come from abroad. If we encourage again hard sciences and reform our education system maybe we'll start to have a domestic edge and then a generation of domestic talents to choose from. It's not only about curtailment of foreign hires but making sure we produce the best talent here in the U.S in the long run.

@uswvme862
I’m sure we’ll get that domestic educational edge by decreasing our funding for American’s education, to the tune of reducing by 200 billion annually for the next 10 years, instead of ramping it up. Yes, we increased the budget for defense by 100-300 billion annually for the next 10 years (sensible and necessary) while simultaneously reducing our spending on education. I have a feeling we have many infiltrators posing as Americans whom hate our Country. Sadly, a significant portion are in both Parties, and each party seems to be competing over who can cripple America the quickest, for the benefit of China

@vincenttong1764
@uswvme862 you mean having the most spending in the world on education per student while being at number 40? Is that more money we need then or an efficiency issue?

@uswvme862
@vincenttong1764 Um, yeah. Tell me, Newton, will decreasing our expenditures on education in despite of being a very unintelligent Country somehow make it… better? Doubtful.
We should grant every single American child enough of a voucher/grant to attend a reasonably impressive private school, and afterwards, dismantle the Federal Board of Education — not destroy something before establishing a replacement.

@vincenttong1764
@uswvme862 if other countries can use their money wisely why cannot the U.S? Would you invest in a company or a person who didn't have a good track record of being accountable for that money? If you were a creditors would you lend to someone with bad credit even more money? No the company would need to restructure and make themselves more efficient first. In the real world that's how it works why would it be different with the department of education?

@brb__bathroom
Tom Cotton makes a fair point, unless russia and China allows open doors, why should the US do so?

Tom Cotton

@kathygillock9977
Do you really think Russia and China would play fair? NO Do not allow this!

@fadsa342
American scientists do go to some Chinese labs. We also invest differently in scientific research than those countries do meaning they produce researchers at a different rate than us. Even if you go to US universities you'll often find that many phd and masters students aren't US citizens.

@danam3966
@fadsa342 true. most people don’t understand 1) how low-standard k-12 education is in US and therefore there is small pool of master & phd candidates 2) this is not 1880 when science publications were rare and researchers had no idea what was happening beyond their labs; go to google scholars or research gate for example and you will know what is going on in the world. Tom Cotton is a product of the poor critical thinking of our education

@danam3966
Well, Tom Cotton needs to learn geography as he often can not distinguish countries from one another. Remember: “ I served my country in Singapore. I am not from China!” and Tom Cotton didn’t understand difference ?? product of our education

@ekujohnson1362
The US allowed them because they are useful and more advanced...They can do what you can't do..

@cashaeleatemla
American government labs are facing a “growing threat” of espionage from foreign adversaries, former Energy Department and national security officials told lawmakers Thursday, with some Chinese researchers raising alarms by collaborating on “nuclear weapons work” with US colleagues.
Two former Department of Energy (DOE) undersecretaries for science and an ex-US counterintelligence officer told members of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee that the scientific espionage was ripping off American innovations and using them to develop weapons and other tech.

@truthsearch2366
Can you pls define who is American? honestly no country in the world can perfectly define their nationality.

@uswvme862
@truthsearch2366 If there’s one or two Countries in the world who can define themselves in this day and age, it is America and Israel. Nationalities matter. Palestinians never existed and there is no government or country called Palestine. I just seen comments about British people unable to define who’s British, well, we certainly don’t have that problem in America. We don’t look at color or heritage to define Nationality. We look at allegiance first, and then familial history. If you were, not only born, but conceived, bred, and raised American, then you’re American. Also, if your father is an American, by extension, you will find it easier to become American. Idk why its such a common sense position for those of us who are thoroughbred red-blooded Americans, but it seems disloyal and unpatriotic people just cannot conceive of such a thing, hence, they want to dish Citizenship out like it’s loose change.

@Assisi9
What kind of reciprocity is he looking for, when at the same time he trumpets that all the the cutting edge research occurs in the US? Why would US scientists go to Russia and China if they're behind in tech?

@caseya2151
I going to admit... Scientists live in a world among themselves... However, Sen Cotton does bring up a very interesting point... Which did raise an eyebrow with me. This shouldn't go unnoticed and be put to the wayside. Which does bring up another point... Forget about the Scientists... How many are working as bureaucrats of the 2.25 Million? Sort of explains a lot... eh?

@maxdc988
Senator, I believe China and Russia would only recruit American scientists into their labs if they have the right caliber, not because they are a TOM, Dick and Harry from America.

@cashaeleatemla
Researchers deputized on behalf of Beijing ended up stealing intellectual property and other technological innovations for batteries, electric vehicles, and semiconductors and are even “trying to steal the future of quantum and fusion,” Dabbar testified.

@celxoirealyx
But these technologies are researched and designed by said foreign scientist too. Basically they're stealing their own homework we should stop being condescending.

@Hoo88846
Does he think science came from USA? Does he think China with 5000 years of civilization and history with a long list of inventions need to copy from a country that didn’t exist for most of recorded human history with only less than 300 years of history? When China opened the Silk Road during the Han Dynasty connecting trade with the Roman Empire, where was USA? When China built the Great Wall and Terra Cotta Army during the Qin Dynasty, where was USA? When China invented their Four Great Chinese Inventions like paper, gunpowder, compass and printing (both woodblock and movable type), and invented Sinospheric cultures Japan, Korea and Vietnam, inventing amazing Chinese cuisine with noodles, dumplings, rice, rice wine, rice noodles, doufu, miso, soy sauce, tea, mocha, paper folding art, penzai (bonsai), weiqi, which the Japanese and Koreans and Vietnamese can’t stop copying from, where was USA? Does he really think the world couldn’t do science before USA came along? What an arrogant usurper of glory just like Satan pretending to be the “creator” and “savior”, the Great Deception of the Anti Christ “God’s chosen people” and its Beast USA (Matthew 24, Revelation 2:9 and 3:9, 2nd Thessalonians 2).

@patriciayohn6136
Do any of these people who are called into Congress ever anticipate the questions that they may be asked so that they are prepared when they appear? IMO the answer is no and a waste of time at taxpayer expense!

@mautan8453
I started to hear a new insult circulating ....along the lines of " You have a Cotton Brain" or "Cotton in your Brain". Finally understood where this expression originated

@willoem2
Lets remember those scientist were there during the Trump's administration as well.. They have been there for decades...

@mikehoh1719
What a naive and racist politician he is, if your country doesn't have all these foreign scientists, your country can be advanced???? Baby brain

@hezabelle
Tom cotton cherry picks numbers and stats. Employers chose scientists based on ability. Americans colleges, contrary to America’s belief, are far from the worlds best and businesses will choose foreign nationals because they are more skilled than those studying chemistry along side majoring in cheerleading and taking American history 101.

Tom Cotton

@MrStevemur
Even with its subpar elementary and secondary schools, the US does produce a few good STEM students. Most of them go where the money is: finance.

@vicentdez1696
Thats big fatal lie...can you name one person whos working in finance and got a PhD in physics

@bobsmith3983
@vicentdez1696 He meant that top US students go into finance rather than science. I'm sure there are scientists and mathematicians that work in finance. For example actuaries.

@TingMo-n4i
It sound like Americans are in big trouble What a joke and waste of taxpayer money at this hearing.

@NerveFlux
During my five years serving a skilled apprenticeship they called the Conex containers Drago's and all the imported materials were made in China. What did Obama call it during one of his speeches? Something about the new world economy. You can choose to protest or you can choose work. Someone else might of said that last part.

@tonyatgoogle6076
Scientific community mindset: share and collaborate.
US senator mindset: create enemies and fear

@Leoq-zk6wt
oh well, people (Chinese or Russian doesn't matter) coming to the US looking for better life, so, if the place nolonger want them, they will just stop coming, and start leaving, simple.

@sugarland1729
The value of science has degraded in the US. research and innovation is considered low level work that has to be carried out by foreigners (like an advance version of fruit-picking) because Americans are after either management or money making and consider research and science beneath them. That said, there are still a few Americans who choose the route of science, often time end up poor (relative to their counterparts)

@babablacksheephyaw
This is the exact senator who asks TikTok CEO whether Singapore is China. American voted for him, don't blame anyone else

@Below4DC
China: Come!Come! We welcome you, bring your family if u want and call us so that we have your lab and accommodation ready

@TheIdiosyncraticMe-t3u
Duh, stupid question. Chinese doesn't need American scientist because they had more than enough. While you need Chinese scientist because you don't have enough.

@Tina-j8p1z
I know!! Not as many as there are foreigners "fixing" our gov't computers and internet !!!......and they wonder why everything in the country gets hacked!!

@zincay
It is not that China does not allow U.S Scientist to be in Chinese lab, it is U.S does not allow many of its scientist to be in Chinese lab.

@Froskru
Do Americans need to go to China or Russia? Those questions are out of quack. America and Europe are the world leaders in technology and science wow.
