So, here's a fun story I heard from someone who is indirectly involved: the design may be undersized, but a huge portion of the problem is the fact that most sailors are college-aged kids who throw stuff they're not supposed to down the toilet. I can't find the exact article now, but apparently, Mop heads were explicitly cited as one of the issues that the designers didn't intend to be flushable (lol).

Only thing it’s designed to flush is toilet paper. And it has to be specific toilet paper, basically cheap one ply, to not clog the system. Anything else will clog it. I’ve worked on these systems for years, they are very reliable when people listen.

If you are designing an aircraft carrier with thousands of soldiers you should probably design the toilets to survive a (literal) bomb going off

Problem is that thats easier said than done, requiring it to me more sturdy will make it larger, which means less space for other stuff, or making the ship larger. Were running into this problem with the new Dutch ASW frigates where making furniture shock resistant makes it bigger, which means they had to design the ship 10 meters longer

As a plumber I can't imagine even the most perfect ideal crew making this system work. A pressurized DWV setup with 4600 people meant to operate for months at a time without being in port was always doomed to this outcome and the people who predicted it in 2011 were entirely correct.
The acid wash makeshift solution was always just kicking the can down the road on an absolutely predictable and inevitable shit show. The crew could have never shit once and never flushed anything down there and it still would have broken

10 years ago I was in Norfolk to welcome my niece home from a lengthy deployment on the USS Bush. There were hundreds of people there to greet sailors, so it took a long time to exit the pier where the ship docked. As we slowly shuffled along, I overheard many sailors describing life on the ship to their family members. Pretty much all of them were complaining about living conditions and expressed relief to be off the ship. My niece said pretty much all of the toilets had stopped flushing a week before, and that they had been "pooping on other people's poop" for several days.

My old roommate told me a story of when he had to repair a shit pipe that was spraying everywhere. He said he stripped naked cause he didn't want shit all over his clothes and put on a scuba mask. The rest of his crew paid for all of his drinks on their next shore leave.

One was on a submarine there was noise coming from the toilet and a sailor looked and shit prayed with force to the ceiling. The doctor had to remove shit from behind the eyelids and from his nostrils.

When building the ship, they just took the amount of people that would be on board, multiplied it by how much the average person dumps, and then divided it by time to calculate the average load of the system.

I’m not sure if there’s a single deployment that doesn’t go through a sewage system crisis of some kind, shipboard systems are notoriously terrible. My RDC going through boot camp was an HT and he was the saltiest, most pissed off person I’ve ever met in my life, like beyond RDC levels of pissed off, because his entire career was just fixing these shitty systems.

ParabolicHyperbole
HT = Hull Technician. It’s a Navy rate, they’re essentially the plumbers on a ship.
HT = 船体技术员。这是海军的一个军衔,他们本质上就是船上的管道工。
Anyone who has spent time on a Navy ship knows that this is a common occurrence. On my last deployment the septic system failed and we had to shit in buckets on the flight deck for 3 months. The ship’s leadership threatened Captain’s Mast for anyone who decided they wanted to complain to an external entity about it.

RDC — recruit division commander. Navy term for drill Sargent.
HT — hull technician. A navy rating specializing in welding, metalwork, repairs, and damage control. Also famously are the shipboard plumbers.

A vacuum based sewage system to conserve water?
Sounds just plain stupid.
I served on Navy submarines. We flushed with…seawater. Extremely plentiful, we were quite literally surrounded by it.
It doesn’t need to be a complicated system. It was gravity drained, all was seawater flushed, and the collection tanks were later pumped overboard (or to a shore facility when in port).
A carrier would probably need some pumping for lower deck toilets (all our toilets were above the collection tanks, but that may not be true of a carrier), but a complicated vacuum system is a maintenance nightmare.
Zrkkr
Salt water is also maintenance nightmare, just one we're used to.
capndiln
Maybe they got a deal on the system since most big cruise ships use a vacuum system? Like, there are tons of cruise ships so someone has certainly developed a "cheaper lighter better faster" vacuum toilet system to be the lowest bidder.
Every cruise ive been on there are numerous warnings about how sensitive it is, and even then there is always some out of order section of the ship.
subsailor1968
A “sensitive” toilet system on a Navy warship would be a disaster.
Combat ship systems need to be simple, reliable, resistant to damage and malfunction, and very robust.
As a famous engineer once said, "The more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain".
derkokolores
My very first assignment at a shipyard was to investigate an issue with galley sinks clogging too frequently for the culinary specialists to keep up with. Went down to the yard to check the as-is drainage vs the drawings and for the life of me could not find the solids interceptor (strainer). I started asking some of the tradies working in the galley and learned that they had heard some of the complaints come back from the crews and decided to just stop installing the interceptor rather than wait for a response from engineering...
It ended up being an incredibly easy problem to resolve once we realized the drawings just specified the wrong model number which meant a hair & lint interceptor being installed rather than one meant for food...
One of my last issues I dealt with on sea trials was a line shaft bearing getting hotter after the lube oil cooling turned on. Turned out a three way valve (with a big directional arrow on it) was installed backwards.
Anyways, just wanted to say that the problems are typically a lot dumber than "attempting to use cutting-edge commercial technologies" and they also start way before the "maybe not brightest sailor."
I wouldn't be surprised if this poop cruise was caused by some dumb engineering/manufacturing spat or more likely some a change order from SUPSHIP that no one could say no to.

It's a boat. Poop off the side.
I'm only mostly kidding. I know it's not feasible to tell 200 people to shit off the side of a big ass aircraft carrier. You know more than one of those idiots would fall off.

Hah, believe it or not I've seen some "hanging" toilets set up like that for stevedores in less developed ports.
Generally people don't appreciate turning their bays into sewage dumps though

I think the Gerald R Ford class has a maximum crew compliment of more than 4,000 people. That’s a lot of hanging asses.

My old roommate told me a story of when he had to repair a shit pipe that was spraying everywhere. He said he stripped naked cause he didn't want shit all over his clothes and put on a scuba mask. The rest of his crew paid for all of his drinks on their next shore leave.

Old_Ladies
Never served but have heard some pretty nasty stories about shit on ships and subs.
One was on a submarine there was noise coming from the toilet and a sailor looked and shit prayed with force to the ceiling. The doctor had to remove shit from behind the eyelids and from his nostrils.
So the lesson learned is if you hear a weird sound in the bathroom don't peak into where the sound is coming from.

While that may be true in your situation, this issue seems to be different.
When building the ship, they just took the amount of people that would be on board, multiplied it by how much the average person dumps, and then divided it by time to calculate the average load of the system.
The ongoing lifetime costs have increased by $40 billion in part for reasons like this according to Bloomberg, and they can need repairs costing $400k 8 times a day according to Navy Times, and requiring external assistance dozens of times.

What do those initialisms stand for?
ParabolicHyperbole
HT = Hull Technician. It’s a Navy rate, they’re essentially the plumbers on a ship.
HT = 船体技术员。这是海军的一个军衔,他们本质上就是船上的管道工。
Anyone who has spent time on a Navy ship knows that this is a common occurrence. On my last deployment the septic system failed and we had to shit in buckets on the flight deck for 3 months. The ship’s leadership threatened Captain’s Mast for anyone who decided they wanted to complain to an external entity about it.
hbh110

If I had a nickel for every flooding call on my ship that was just backed up shitters, I'd have about a dollar or so, but that's plenty... usually caused by someone flushing their dirty undies
