This would be a good project if it reached the targeted destination, Malaba. Unfortunately it ended in the middle of nowhere and there is no funding to complete it.
This project will further lose relevance as Uganda plans to now connect to TZ SGR line.
Northern corridor, as a viable option, has many players, hence stiff competition.
The only remaining viable option is to connect with TZ SGR network, after electrifying KE SGR, so that it can have a share of the market (DRC, Burundi, Rwanda etc.)

You people like to bring up these arguments when China is involved, but the West never really showed any willingness to actually invest in any project that would spur growth on the continent. The concept for that Railway was created decades ago, but none of Kenya's so-called Western allies were willing to invest in it. Even now, the so-called Nairobi-Mombasa expressway is supposed to be funded and built by an American company, but they are hesitating and seem unwilling to take the risk. From the way things are going, the project will end up with a Chinese contractor.

In addition, the Kenyan SGR is very different from the Tanzanian SGR because the former is mainly designed for cargo, while the Tanzanian SGR is designed for freight. In addition, the landscape in Kenya is completely different from that of Tanzania, which mainly runs on a flat surface. At this point, you are just talking out of Suluhu's ass because Uganda lixing their SGR to TZ doesn't mean they have abandoned their initial plans. It is called diversifying the risk. They just don't want to rely on a single route, and that makes sense.

@corvusglaive5769 I'm talking about the SGR that has never been swept by floods! Recently, the authorities stopped it temporarily to allow corrective and preventive maintenance following the heavy rains.
TZ SGR is modern, has a higher axle load capacity(35Tons vs KE's 25Tons), is faster with much lower operating and maintenance costs (electric).
It is designed primarily to haul cargo/freight from the port(s) to the land locked countries. While KE is still dilly dallying Tanzania is busy constructing the extension from Uvinza, Tanzania to Musongati, Burundi and plans are being finalized to extend it to Manyema in the DRC, Rwanda, Uganda and beyond.
Tanzania is a lot bigger than Kenya, with diverse landscapes. You should have learned this in school. The SGR passes through mountains, valleys, flood plains etc., hence the bridges and viaducts, both underground/tunnels and elevated.
TZ SGR is superior to KE's in all aspects and visibly Tanzania is very intentional in its projects.

Honestly it's not China fault but the country that request the loan. They didn't think it thru went they took the loan and hence when they can't make payment. It's the same as what banks do when you can't pay your house, they take it to recoup their losses

Kenya is not the only solution and this hubris has seen Tanzania now surpass Kenya as the biggest exporter to Uganda which is basically the distribution hub of the region. Kenya's SGR began before Tanzania's, but they have built it to the shores of Lake Victoria already and have built ports together with Uganda to facilitate trade there. Kenya meanwhile has failed to extend it's SGR to this day.

You're wrong. When the financial calculations show that the project is viable the "West" is more than eager to fund projects. The problem for this particulat one is not only presumed corruption, but that previous studies done by European Consultants showed that the return on investment is not sufficient to fund the project. In other words, the railway is not able to collect sufficient money to pay for operation, maintenance and - at least - parts of the loan. This was dismissed by China doing an extremely positive feasibility study overexagerating potential benefits to show that is is viable. And Kenyan Authorities were more than happy to accept these figures, as it mean that the project will be funded and they can have their personal return. There are already videos on YouTube speaking about issues in revenue collection.
Will the railway work? Definitely. It might take more time than anticipated to repay the loan by Kenya.

For example, Amtrak has almost never generated profit since its inception, but you cannot say that it was a bad investment. The same can be said about the New York subway, which also operates at a significant loss. Judging such projects solely on their profit generation is entirely missing the big picture.

The said plans exist only in papers and vain rhetorics. Nothing conclusive so far.
The earlier the better. It beats all logic; why doesn't the government opt for local financing (internal borrowing) instead of wasting precious time?!
Are the people of Kenya (the rich) so self-centred to this extent that they won't lend a hand to their own government?!
Or are they fighting the project so that their lorries can continue to haul the freight to and from the port?

Project speed also comes with financial costs. I suspect the Chinese government bank is a commercial entity and not a charitable foundation. If the project delivers good financial benefits to both parties, possibly in the long term, it is a win-win situation for both of them.

@Bubajumba Most debt in the world is brought by western finance institutions like the World Bank, IMF & Eurobond not China. The Chinese dept in Kenya is only 17% of Kenya's total national debt. The rest is IMF, Local Debt and World Bank
