We have two dominant countries, China and the US. Plenty of discussions about whether China is a superpower, or the US is. Well, being a superpower means a lot of things. It could be measured by military prowess, economic strength, global influence and technological superiority.
Without a doubt, the US took over the baton of superpower from the British Empire. Who ca dispute the fame of Detroit city where songs and dances were weaved around it? US's auto industry kept the world well supplied with huge cars often nicked name "the Yank Tanks". The US got the jump on the rest of the world during the US industrialization, it took over the oil supply by installing a dictator in Iran. From there and then, the "Petrol Dollars" was born, and it stays dominant till now.
But is the US still as powerful as it was say 30 years ago, 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago? Well, in 1990, US national debt was 2.5
Trillions.IfIamtostandtwoUS,onein1990bearingameager2.5Trillions debt, and I compare the other US in 2025 which is weighted down by a whooping 36,22 $Trillions, I like the one in 1990 much better.
And there lies the superpower USA. It has 77 overseas military bases to project its military prowess, but these are the one reasons why the US is bleeding money through its backside. These bases are NOT cash positive if you are to look at purely through economic lenses. These are dead weight. These give the impression that the US is very powerful, but like all things, keeping up appearances does cost a lot.
Now look at the quiet superpower. China. It's military bases can be counted on one hand. Far from being powerful. However, its power lies in economy. Instead of military bases, it builds ports, transport hubs, rails and roads, and firms up on its control over critical minerals. That I think really got Trump worried. Instead of going nuts on tariffs like in Canada and Mexico, he is talking about "China and the US can share the world". China has the control of the taps through which critical minerals flow. What bothers the US most is many of these critical minerals would severely affect US weaponry. Being always militarily gang-ho, US's guns could fall silent without these critical minerals. It is akin to taking a knife to the US's manhood ! That hurts !

India was the wealthiest country in the world before it was pillaged (at the amount of 48 Trillion Dollars) and carved up by the Brits. It has many problems but it is a powerhouse in many respects, the largest functioning democracy and far from a "failed state".

I suppose one can say China suffered 100 years of aggression. But that is also not really correct. China has always suffered aggression. Suffering external aggression had been the China storey for more than 2000 years since the Han Dynasty.
Also, a significant part of it was self-inflicted, such as isolationism, hubris, rampant corruption, feudalism, ignorance and infighting. Don't forget, this period included the warlords era.
If Chinese society was not so f'ed up back then in the 19th and early 20th centuries that the general populace could only seek solace in opium, the Opium War and its aftermath would not have been so devastating. While the British forced China to allow the sale of opium, nobody forced them to buy.
"Humiliation" may well be the closest. Humiliation can also be self-inflicted.
Using "humiliation" reminds the Chinese people to also self-reflect, instead of blaming everyone else, because it is not wholly the West's fault.

I suppose one can say China suffered 100 years of aggression. But that is also not really correct. China has always suffered aggression. Suffering external aggression had been the China storey for more than 2000 years since the Han Dynasty.
Also, a significant part of it was self-inflicted, such as isolationism, hubris, rampant corruption, feudalism, ignorance and infighting. Don't forget, this period included the warlords era.
If Chinese society was not so f'ed up back then in the 19th and early 20th centuries that the general populace could only seek solace in opium, the Opium War and its aftermath would not have been so devastating. While the British forced China to allow the sale of opium, nobody forced them to buy.
"Humiliation" may well be the closest. Humiliation can also be self-inflicted.
Using "humiliation" reminds the Chinese people to also self-reflect, instead of blaming everyone else, because it is not wholly the West's fault.
