The Geely Galaxy M9 is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) crossover SUV that is about the same size as the Kia EV9 or Telluride.
Edmunds was able to get a full 101 miles of EV range from the Galaxy M9's 41 kWh battery before the gas generator kicked on.
In China, this vehicle starts at about $25,000.
As Chinese cars get into the hands of more U.S. experts and commentators, people are learning that I was right all along: these things are seriously good vehicles.
Geely left behind an imported Galaxy M9 in the U.S. in the aftermath this year’s CES, and recently let Edmunds put it through its paces, just like the outlet would do for any vehicle sold officially in the United States.
It shocked them. Geely’s biggest PHEV crossover bested some of our best big hybrid crossovers, while achieving a full 101 miles of driving on full electric power alone. In all, Edmunds staffers and road testers agreed that Chinese cars were ready for prime time, and that if the Galaxy M9 came to the U.S., it would hold its own against established mainstream and premium big crossovers.
For those not in the know, the Geely Galaxy M9 is a medium to large crossover about the same size as the Kia Telluride, Toyota Grand Highlander, and the Kia EV9. It’s available in six or seven seats, and sits at the very top of Geely’s Chinese lineup. Power comes from a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which works in concert with a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) and three different electric motors.
These electric motors are fed by a fairly large 41 kWh battery. In all, it’s good for a staggering 858 horsepower. This is very similar to the powertrain I’ve experienced in the Lynk & Co 900, although the Geely Galaxy M9 has a smaller battery and smaller gas engine than the Lynk & Co 900. I liked the Lynk & Co 900’s powertrain and road manners; it was quick and whisper-quiet.
Edmunds found that the Galaxy M9 had similar manners, too. The M9 sprinted to 60 mph in a very quick 4.2 seconds, beating out all of its contemporaries like the Hyundai Palisade, Kia EV9, and even the Lexus TX. It’s right on pace with the BMW X5 PHEV, which is a much more expensive car. It did all of this while being measurably quieter inside than the ultra-luxury, $400,000 Rolls-Royce Spectre. That's pretty impressive for a vehicle with an as-tested price that equates to roughly $35,000. Similarly, Edmunds loved its lightning-fast infotainment, comparing it to Tesla and Rivian in terms of responsiveness.
"In track and on-road testing, this three-row SUV exceeded almost all of our expectations," Edmunds' Clint Simone wrote. "Chinese cars are ready for prime time in America."
It's worth noting that the price would likely be a lot higher if it were to ever come to the U.S. Vehicle prices typically cannot be directly converted between currencies and markets, as a variety of factors influence final pricing. But for a vehicle at any price in its class, the Galaxy M9 is very impressive.
Now, for me, it feels like Edmunds is sort of preaching to the choir here. I’ve been writing about how good Chinese cars are for the last part of my career. I’ve put them through their paces, driven them around racetracks, and talked to plenty of laypeople and industry insiders who have experienced them. But now we have actual empirical evidence as to how good these cars are, straight from a source that measures and tests their vehicles. A 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds does best nearly all of anything of this size in the U.S, while its 101-mile tested EV range has yet to be matched by any sort of PHEV on our market.
Geely itself has been relatively open when it comes to entering the U.S. market. The M9 may not be its first choice of vehicle, but it has expressed the desire to possibly bring more of its cars here, and not under brands like Polestar or Volvo, two brands that it also owns. However, they are facing an uphill battle; there is still a 100% tariff on Chinese-made vehicles.
Also, some politicians aren’t keen on Chinese brands coming here in any fashion. Recently, Senator Bernie Moreno called Chinese cars a “cancer” and wants to introduce stronger legislation to block them from coming here at all, even through partnerships with non-Chinese brands. The U.S. already bans Chinese connected car software, making the process of creating an export version far more expensive.
Regardless, it’s clear that Chinese cars are very much ready for the world. And if they ever show up on our shores, then established brands are going to be in for a pretty big fight.

Not surprising, the geely group has been quietly producing great cars under all their sub brands including zeekr and most importantly tapping on their strengths of their acquired companies like Volvo and their manufacturing and battery know how from their China counterparts.
The greatest byd competitor coming out of China IMO

The Geely Galaxy M9 PHEV impressed Edmunds, covering 101 miles on electric power alone and accelerating to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.
101 miles of EV range from the Galaxy M9's 41 kWh battery before the gas generator kicked on.
In China, this vehicle starts at about $25,000 USD.

In america it wouldnt be sold for less than 65000

You’re way off. The Zeeker 7x sells for $32k USD in China, and $40k USD equivalent in Australia, and that’s factoring a higher price for a relatively tiny market

Including 100% tariffs and a total ban on importation?
The US likely won't even allow these cars to be driven across the border from Canada or Mexico if registered legally there.
Bolt

The US definitely lets in Chinese EV if is were registered in Mexico or Canada. My family n I were in San Diego couple months ago, and we saw a couple of BYDs with Mexican license plates driving around.

And at one point it was legal to sell and buy Chinese EVs in USA. Then it wasn't.

It's because it costs far less to manufacture an EV, they just have a huge margin on them to appear like they cost more to manufacture. Think about the tooling that needs to go into an ICE motor compared to the tooling that goes into an electric motor. There is no comparison. Chinese electric cars in the US would drive down their margin significantly.

Its registered to Mexico, thats not the same as imported and staying in the US. Even if the owner is someone who lives on the Mexico side and is from the us to avoid taxes

That’s only going to make US manufacturers fall further behind. You’ll become an island of stagnation. The smart move was to copy China’s playbook and welcome them in with equity and tech sharing agreements. But the lobbyists would never allow that

The ironic thing is that China copied our playbook for it and then we in the US abandoned it. China has been successful by investing in lots of different companies and seeing which ones make it, with BYD for example being a top winner. We did the same thing here, with a program that gave us both Solyndra (a rather famous failure) as well as Tesla. But I guess it worked too well, so we had to discontinue the approach.

Oh they tried. They just did it very, very badly and way too late. After they spent years laughing at Tesla and China instead of taking better notes. People tend to forget that none what was going on was a secret. Legacy auto just didn't care until the gravy train in China started slowing down.

Copying no physical controls... A cost savings measure from Tesla as if that's what people want rather than making an inexpensive EV which is what people need is an example of focusing on the wrong details.

If they get any push back I guess they can call it the Ei Polestar (electric innovation line). slap a need front or backend and badge
Make a higher or lower end Volvo similar as well
Then say what you gonna do as long as it has Android Auto or car play XD Gets around the huawei ban that way

Is there a single E-REV 3 Row SUV on sale in the US Market currently? If there isn’t, how is it crushing the competition if there isn’t any to compare it to. Also no way it would sell for $25K in the US market more like the $50k or $70k Edmund’s mentioned in their recent overview video. Still competitive though at a $70k price point though.

There's the Pacific Hybrid. Not really an SUV and only about 30 miles range. Also pretty dang expensive.
确实有Pacifica Hybrid(克莱斯勒大捷龙混动版)。
BringbacktheFocusRS
The Pacifica hybrid also only has a 16 kWh battery in it. Makes sense that it would get about 1/3 the electric range.
MrClickstoomuch
I mean, the PHEV Pacifica actually drove pretty nicely for how big of a car it was. And yeah, 30 miles isn't great on that size of battery, but when it launched in 2016 for $42k you have to keep in mind the Chevrolet Volt had a $33k MSRP with about 20 more EV miles. So, you would have paid $9k more to have a 3 row Minivan over a very small sedan. The Pacifica PHEV got a combined 32 mpg on the gas engine to the Volt's 42 combined mpg, which is VERY solid at the time.
It didn't help that the Pacifica got hit by a number of post launch issues. But it was actually a surprisingly capable car from Stellantis / FCA.
但实话实说,它其实是 Stellantis(前FCA)造出的一款相当能打的车型。

Oh you don't need to convince me. I'm still driving mine. Great vehicle.

Economy cars really shouldn’t have luxury features like that unless they are luxury trims. Like a lot of the times I see these type of things from EVs or even simple things like rotating screens I can’t help but think how expensive that would be to replace or fix here in the US. Especially since Chinese brands have made it clear they intend to use a traditional dealership model in the US.

Chinese Automakers Surpass Japan’s Global Vehicle Sales For The First Time
https://www.businesstoday.com.my/2026/03/24/Chinese-automakers-surpass-japans-global-vehicle-sales-for-the-first-time/
The report said that total global sales by Japanese automakers fell slightly to around 25 million units in 2025, causing Japan to lose its long-held top position for the first time since 2000. Meanwhile, Chinese car manufacturers recorded nearly 27 million units in global sales last year, rising to the top spot worldwide.

I've owned a BYD Seal Dual Motor EV for two months, to replace a Hyundai Kona 64kw EV. In the past I've owned a Jeep Cherokee, several BMW variants, 2 x Mercedes SLK, Porsche Boxster and a ruck of other makes & models. No other car has impressed me so much as the BYD. The build quality is excellent, comfort is second to none, equipment and 'gizmo' level - nice, performance and and sheer 'driveability' (not sure how else to describe it) is superb. I lost the love of driving in the early 90s, due to a long M1, M25, M4, A4 commute, but now I find myself looking for excuses to "take her out for a spin".
Everyone I've taken for a whirl has been impressed, and without exception, had their minds changed regarding electric cars.
Other manufacturers need to up their game to take BYD on - IMHO.

C_Werner
C_Werner

Economy cars really shouldn’t have luxury features like that unless they are luxury trims.

They’ve sucked at cars for the past 50+ years.

Maybe it's already been mentioned but it's worth pointing out that Geely is already in North America, disguised as Volvo and Polestar.
aaand downvoted in seconds for a straightforward fact. Someone's got an axe to grind? Both of those companies have been subsidiaries of Geely for upwards of five years already. The polestar 2 got bounced clear out of the US market thanks to tariffs on Chinese-built cars.

If American auto makers do not find a way to save themselves with innovation, which was the hallmark of American vehicles I'm afraid they will have doomed themselves. I guess this shows what happens when you do not to R&D and do not educate your own population.

I mean US cars in general ain't shit anymore for the last 3 decades. There'll be a time U.S. autos could be the same fate as british automakers. DEAD.
