Also US manufacturers dont make cars anymore, they exclusively make suvs and trucks now. They don't make cars that are sized for non-american roads. they are literally too big so we can't export them to countries that can't feasibly sustain their size.

Yeah many subs and trucks don't fit on the old roads we have here in the EU and if they do, parking spaces can be too small.

They do that in US parking lots too. The sizes have grown so fast that parking lots that have been there for more than 20 years have spaces too small for these new land yachts

A quick search says that was the result of the US trade war with China started in Trump’s first term. So between trade pressures and increases/improvements in Chinese auto manufacturing, I’m assuming most of that dip we see in US exports to China decreasing.

American cars basically suck unless you're a teenager or badly formed adult that likes a car designed to look fast but is not really, loud af and still think that 20 mpg is ideal? And don't forget, the base models all start at 35k

As an American who never wants to drive anything other than a sedan, it is extremely frustrating. Obviously I can (and do) drive imports, but the distortion of the market here means that you often pay a premium for what is obxtively a cheaper car to produce.

SUVs are just inefficient. They aren't good if you want something easy to park and maneuver, and they have less trunk and passenger space than an equivalent minivan. People who drive trucks but never use the flatbed are a joke. I have no idea how manufacturers convinced people to buy a product that was worse in nearly every way to other products that already existed. I guess they look better and some of them have better traction or can tow things, but the number of times that is useful to the average person is minimal.

The size of modern pickup trucks is infuriating even on American roads. Their headlights are at eye level for most other cars, which is extremely dangerous with how bright modern LED headlights are at night. I once had to pull over onto the shoulder because a pickup in the oncoming lane had their high beams on and I literally couldn’t see the car in front of me, so it wasn’t safe to keep going until the pickup had passed

I am yet to drive a good American car. Japan and Germany produce legitimately good cars, US cars in my experience are pretty unreliable and not great to drive (cornering/handling in particular is usually really bad in American cars). If anything its a surprise that their export numbers were ever comparable to Germany and Japan.

Whenever I look at buying my next vehicle. I glance at domestics and keep right on moving. Typically more expensive and typically fewer features. I'm slowly creeping up to seventy years old... I clearly remember when imports were fairly rare. When anyone driving an import was considered a bit off... Most of the cars I owned until 2000 were American made. I exclusively purchased imports for the past twenty five years. We live in South Minneapolis. The majority of the sedans we see are imports. A good percentage of the trucks are American made. Somewhat related. Our daughter rented a sedan for a business trip. American made. In her words, never again. Having said that. She went on a longer trip with a coworker. He rented a maxed out Cadillac SUV. Every feature and comfort. Which she loved. But would she buy one? Nope...

As a European, I will say this for American cars, when I've driven them on American roads they've been mostly really great cars. I just don't think i could drive them anywhere other than America. As you mentioned with your daughter in the Cadillac on a longer trip, I think American cars are largely designed for your big wide open roads and highways with very few sharp corners or narrow roads to negotiate. Comfort on fairly long and fairly straight journeys seems to be where American cars really thrive, which makes complete sense given the road network you guys have. However in most of the rest of the world where the roads are either a little older, tighter, or less well maintained, you wouldn't want an American car. You'd want a German or Japanese car, because they kind of cover all bases, any road or any terrain you're probably ok in one of them.

You pivot from what you know. They already had the infrastructure to create vehicles and engines on a massive war scale. The next move would be to just make civilian vehicles instead of tanks. It’s the same reason America also pivoted to make cars as well.

Most vehicles in the United States are really more fit for Unites States and Canada use only... They're usually big pick-up trucks and SUVs nowadays with huge petrol engines. That goes from common civilian vehicles to commercial vehicles where the vehicles they manufacture are fit for their roads and conditions and not anywhere else. Meanwhile, cars and commercial vehicles from Europe, Japan, China, South Korea, etc will thrive in any country AND within the United States. It also doesn't help that the reliability of America's big 3 are commonly... Shit.

Even some US cars are made in China. Ford has a bunch of their vehicles made there and "final" assembly is in the U.S. the problem with the U.S. is that the rich decided to get richer by abandoning the U.S. while still thriving off of her. The US had an enormous advantage over China when it came to: attracting and retaining global talent and manpower (even after all the xenophobia and trench tier social services), maintaining a stable political system of checks and balances that ensured some measure of accountability and transparency (even after oligarchic capture and weaponised ignorance), being the most trusted and reliable guarantor of a rules based international order (even after all the hypocrisy and naked venality and flip flopping). Emphasis on "had". The US government currently seems determined to throw all of the nation's biggest strengths down the shitter. Not that China doesn't also have its own problems, but it's still going to leave the US in the dust if the US throws away everything that made it powerful in the first place.

My next car will be Chinese. In Brazil, car companies fuck the average customer so much it's funny. For y'all in Europe/US, I want you to think about the shittiest new car you can get from a dealership. A really basic one. How much does it cost? How many months of work does it take to get that car? Well. In Brazil, it costs 53 months of minimum wage to buy the worst car we sell, in it's most basic configuration. All cars follow this. And our cars are significantly worse than yours, it's like our market has your stuff from 2010. A Corolla costs about 133 months of minimum wage. They sell cars with the 2 minimum airbags necessary by law, manual system for rolling up the windows. New cars, in big 2025, with manual window systems, the one you spin. For 53 minimum wages. plastic everywhere, the shitty one. Fuck this, fuck all these companies. Byd is dominating here, geely is entering the market. I feel nothing but resent for car makers.

A quick search says that was the result of the US trade war with China started in Trump’s first term. So between trade pressures and increases/improvements in Chinese auto manufacturing, I’m assuming most of that dip we see in US exports to China decreasing.

Shit.

Whereas China is treating them like a new product and developing them like a new product would be developed; where is with cost a main factor and bloat has yet to arrive.
