I’m a Korean American living in the 626 and the first time I smelled stinky tofu was from a food truck parked at a local park. Please don’t come at me for what I’m about to say, I thought I stepped on dog poo! I’m sorry to say that about anyone’s food because people have always talked about how bad kimchi smells! (btw-Don’t have that in my fridge) however I do love durian and sometimes have that in my freezer!

@kozmickwe477
Stinky Tofu is very popular in Changsha, Hunan province as well.

Out of the three, Lululemon is the one that I have a problem with because it's a ripoff!

The White MJ set. If you're gonna play, learn the tiles.

@INFM2
yes we should be offended because they’re appropriating our shit

@DiamondFlame45
In the end of the day, you have to do what aligns with your values and dollar! That’s the only way people listen!

You left out the shoes.

It was like 9 years ago when the restaurant got the complaint. Precisely, they did not "have to take stinky tofu off the menu." They had to not make a big stink. They could figure out how to offer stinky tofu like 50 other restaurants do in the area. I could literally give you a list of a dozen other restaurants nearby that serve stinky tofu with no issues--because they don't blast the smell out to the houses behind the restaurant. The righteous AZN kid of the family that took over the restaurant just decided to bring back this old matter, disingenuously, to dupe people outside the SGV that don't even realize 99% chance the people complaining in the neighborhood are fellow Chinese, and get some press.

@joannenugent8495
I love tofu - as long as it is braised,fried or breaded - but have never tried stinky tofu and only found out about it recently.

Me personally,I prefer to buy something that comes from where it was made although I don't see any harm in other places making them.If they aren't giving credit to where it comes from it is one thing,but if they are denying it and claiming they created it then I don't agree with that

@legomars1
Lululemon is the most offensive because there is history of racism and prejudice there, so not crediting is just par for the course for them.

@NEONGLITCH_E404
Been a martial artist all my life. I refuse to learn a martial arts from a non-Asian “master” simply because, 99% they put their own bullsh*t spin on it; and yes, they may embrace the culture and have done their due diligence. However, from my experience, students who trained under foreign non-Asian masters have always gotten their ass beat in a real fight. Every martial artist should at one point, travel and/or live in Asia to learn from the direct source; similar to what KarateNerd does on YouTube. Also, the Dallas / Texas Mahjong is thing is brilliant. I’m honestly surprised and disappointed that some East Asian person who is American of Chinese heritage didn’t think about making an American version of mahjong and and sell to other Americans and have it pop off. Thus, spreading / normalizing more East Asian culture because let’s be real, Westerners really only care about East Asian culture (and to some degree South Asian culture) because it is the fulcrum that influences everything else. I want to see America embrace more East Asian culture because we as a Western society have Black and/or Islam fatigue.

@wesleychun3058
First, that's one reason stinky tofu is cooked outdoors vs indoors. Secondly the Lululemon shoes, if again credit  should be due where credit is due. Thirdly, mahjong like other cultural heritage activities should remain in its original form with yes some changes ok. But when you completely change it, it no longer should be considered the same or similar to the og.

@JerryThomas-fg9ms
im asian but i also like to think im pretty obxtive with these types of things.
stinky tofu issue - just because something is "cultural" doesn't mean others, who are not part of the culture, have to suffer through it. just like how Muslims shouldn't complain that there's no halal food when they travel or how white people shouldn't complain about taking off their shoes in asian households.
lululemon - i can get how asians may have bad feelings towards the brand given the racist origins of the name. if that's the case, we have the right to simply not do business with them. with regards to the shoes, "cultural appropriation" happens everywhere. the idea that you have to give credit to the culture, etc. is just some woke nonsense.
gentrified mahjong - nobody owns the rights to mahjong. if they wanna sell high end mahjong sets and have customers who want to buy, its their right to do so, just like if asians want to take something white, create their own version of it and sell it at a premium, we have the right to do so as well.

@mary-gael7633
Me wanting to taste the stinky tofu
Oh, and Lululemon is doing what the clothing industry always does and I don’t like it.

@goose2698
Double ended sword questions with answers its they way you have to look at it and be offended or not I mean the whole Majhong game set As a Filipino American when I saw Sungka branded into a American version called Mancala I was not offended but was surprised about it I laughed and said Huh thats cool but it wont break me as an asian I will teach people that in the Philippines  its called Sungka and thats where it came from

@maxinvictus
Lululemon selling knockoff Chinese shoes is the only story here that offends me and  not even because of cultural appropriation.  The company founder and ex-ceo's racist beliefs are reflected in the company name.

967.712559510+

If you have to ask if you’re offended you’re not offended

@MedalionDS9
There are all sorts of 'cultural things' that will be not great for people in North America...there is a compromise.  If there is no other choice and you want to continue business in the West and people are complaining... compromise.  Are you willing to die on the hill to defend Stinky Tofu cuz of culture... you can, but you will find out it won't work out.   Use your common sense and figure what is worth dying on the hill for, when you are a business appealing in the West.  I mean isn't it obvious from the name it's called over here... STINKY tofu... means it stinks... even if it tastes good for some people... people don't wanna be dealing with the smell.  Sorry my culture believes in not bathing, so you have to put up with me smelling like shit... I mean no bro... there are limits.

@stefano94103
I'm African American and I was offended by what he has said about Asians and I will not help that man become richer. I won't step in the store because  the founder definitely has colonizer issues. I used to buy a lot of Lululemon gear until I found out about the CEO comments.

@blaizegottman4139
Seems everyone is obsessed with colonizers

@stefano94103
@blaizegottman4139  So you don't care about the suffering and taking advantage of other humans. OK

@montsouthern
OMG only in the US do you get people complaining about cultural appropriation BS. Why do Americans love to make up ridiculious reasons to be offended.

@biglance
People who get "offended" about ANYTHING are just a bunch P-holes. peace.

@jjsamuelgunn1136
white gentrified mahjong is the most insulting. not only are you appropriating Chinese culture, you are intentionally white washing it. you are actually making the effort to remove all elements of its Chinese origin. the Chinese origins of mahjong is very clear and explicit on mahjong tiles, compared to say the lululemon Chinese shoes.

@ChiaWangNYC
This is hard to watch because of your rambling.  Can you get in a studio and put some effort into your content?

@maciw456
As a Taiwanese person I think this is a nothing burger.  They have other dishes that they can serve.  Totally reasonable for the city to require them to purchase a special fan if they want to continue making this dish.  All the neighbors / patrons in the area shouldn’t be subjected to the smell.

@MedalionDS9
Being offended is a choice.  There are all sorts of different versions of another person's culture... you are not going to stop it.   If they made it with bad intention, yeah call em out, but if they have their own inspired version for themselves... that's just how life works.

@philliptruong9130
I think if you bring your culture to America. It is Americas culture now. Plus, these are not like changing things and no one will really care except for me, I love stinky tofu!
