I am mostly about Chinese, Japanese and Korean which is what I have tried so far. I literally don't know what the hype is. All their desserts aren't even that sweet, they're gooey and yucky. I don't even know why they're so trendy right now

All their desserts aren't even that sweet
I think this is a feature, not a bug.
With that said, if you're in one of those East Asian countries, and primarily eating that cuisine, you'll probably be exposed to less sugar in your regular diet. Things taste sweeter, because you're not being bombarded by sugar hiding in savoury items, as is common in processed western foods.

There's a running joke that the highest praise for a dessert an Asian parent will give is "it's not too sweet".
Even with the sweeter or richer desserts, like mango sticky rice, the sweetness will always be balanced with another flavour like a bit of salt.
I prefer East Asian desserts, but probably because I grew up with them.

I am 30 and I started to say the same thing "not too sweet."

You ever have a fruit ice cream where it’s just sweet enough to make the flavors pop, but not so much it washes over the other tastes? That’s what makes Peachy Paterno at Penn state my favorite fruit ice cream.

From a country with delicious sweets and desserts, but my mom went on an anti-sugar kick and says this constantly now. And moreso for Asian deserts she's tried.
Back in the day they did have to make sugary preserves to survive the brutal winters. Not so much anymore.

I didn't grow up with them, but I like them.
I find a lot of Indian desserts too sweet. I can't do galub jamun - it's the sugar equivalent of taking a big bite of lemon. It's too much, my mouth complains.

The bad ones are horrible. The good ones (very rare) melt in your mouth.
But yes, compared to East Asian desserts, Indian subcontinent's desserts are super sweet.

Not too sweet is a feature of East Asian desserts not Indian. Indian desserts use ghee and sugar very liberally. Infact if you can smell the ghee and sugar syrup combo from outside the shop it is considered a great sweet shop.

That's funny because it's the first thing everyone says on Polish wedding party when the cake is good.

Yes, I'm Malay Malaysian. When I said the dessert not too sweet..trust me everybody will want to try it and it'll be a big hit.
I always have to cut the sugar amount in half everytime I tried cakes & cookies recipe from my favourite american baker/youtuber. It just too sweet for my liking.

I'm pretty anti-sweet myself, but sugar has a big effect on the finished texture of some things. A high sugar content is what makes many baked goods moist and tender, and it has a big effect on the texture of frozen desserts like ice creams too. So there is a reason for it to be there sometimes...subbing it out without altering the finished products mouthfeel can require a lot cooking knowledge.

This. American desserts are disgustingly, almost inedibly sweet.
A cake from a Chinese bakery is a delight and doesn't leave you feeling like you need to throw up or lapse into a coma after eating it.

You say western but really America HFC is in everything here.

HFCS is an American thing, but other Western countries have their share of added sugar. The US might be the leader, but UK, Canada, and Australia are no strangers to processed foods and sugary breads.

Chinese and Koreans put a lot of sugar in their cooking. Like a lot. Some of it is for balancing acidic ingredients and some is just for flavor. I was honestly shocked how much sugar is in Korean food when I started looking at cookbooks and watching YouTube videos of good cooks. I always skip it or add honey instead.

As a korean, our dessert is cigarette.

And iced Americano

nah, in Korea, instant coffee in a disposable cup AND a cigarette, preferably mild 7s

being raised as a chinese american my chinese parents rarely ate sweet as far as dessert goes we’ll have some fresh fruits right after a meal or something refreshing like a simple green/red bean in water with very little rock sugar. even when it came to parties asian cakes aren’t as sweet as you’d think but they’ll only have one slice. maybe it’s a health conscious thingy also.
Most asians if not all when ordering boba drinks would get them half or 1/4 sweetness and still would say it’s too sweet lol

Which is one of many reasons why the average Chinese is probably less obese than the average white American? :D

i mean chinese has their fair share of obesity in china but the numbers are drastically lower. i’m not sure how it is in china with mc donald’s but asians in the states like hanging out at mickey dee’s older asians at least.

The older Asians treat McDonald’s as a treat not an everyday lunch option like most Americans. They eat at home most of the time so McDonald’s is a treat for them to have on weekends or such when they don’t cook. It’s also a nice change from Asian food

China now has the same diabetes rate as the US and the largest population of diabetics in the world. This is a direct result of drastic reductions in poverty in China over the past 30 years.
When people have food scarcity, they are not obese. When people have food abundance, and a large portion of the diet is high GI, insulin spiking rice, then diabetes is a statistical consequence.

yeah my mom being from china meals were always accompanied with a bowl of soup usually before the main meal and it fills your stomach first resulting in you not eating too much of the main meal. we also eat more greens than meat. chinese people are big on balance when it comes to diet lol especially their hot and cold superstition or idea.

From what I can tell, desserts aren't a big part of East Asian cuisine. Mochi are yummy though

nightowl_119
Ever heard of Bingsu?

Frozen milk and sweetened condensed milk is what they use now

I don’t know, whenever I see those fluffy Japanese cheesecakes on YouTube I want them really bad.

I am Chinese, currently living in the US and I am infuriated by this post. I’ve been here 6 years so far and I still DO NOT UNDERSTAND yall’s obsession with sugar. Your classic breakfasts are basically desserts. Sweet pancakes or waffles of which the batter is already filled with sugar topped with powdered sugar, then yall drench them in an abundance of sugary syrup or honey, added with some fruit jam or nutella, which again are also sugar. Everytime I try an American dessertery the amount of sugar is always so damn potent that it overwhelms the taste of other ingredients and almost numbs my taste buds. Sugar and dessert is supposed to bring joy to your body and lighten your mood, but with a bite of these American desserts all I feel is remorse on why I spent money on this shit and why did I put this massive amount of tasteless calories in my mouth.
That being said, I respect your opinion. And I love blueberry muffins.

As an American, I can agree with you. I don't have too much of a sweet tooth, honestly, and a lot of really sugary sweets make me feel sick. I prefer more bitter desserts like dark chocolate, for instance. Having a little sugar now and then is fine for me, but it's hard to just have a little bit when everything is literally drenched in sugar. Eating at restaurants where the portions are huge is a struggle too and I can never finish a dish there. I don't get why we serve so much food here and then act shocked by the "obesity epidemic" or whatever and put so much pressure on each other to lose weight. Like I wonder why many Americans are clinically overweight. It's probably because of the options we have for food.

I feel quite the opposite about the food portion here haha. I love how absurd and honest the food portions are. You ordered ribs? BAM, here's your RIBS. You ordered mac n cheese? BAM, MAC N CHEESE. No shady ass games like piling bean sprouts underneath to make the portion look larger or sprinkling the minimum amount of protein like some Chinese restaurants pull. The food I paid for in American restaurants are always honest. As for the potential waste, I just eat whatever I can and pack the leftovers, I encourage even my most snobbish friends to do so. Why waste perfectly good food that I paid for, and we human society has collectively put thousands of energy, resources and effort in to produce?

It is definitely a positive thing then as the popularity of less sugary dessert rise in the west. If more people are actively choosing dessert with less sugar, I hope the American food industry will respond accordingly by start putting less sugar in the food.

I had a dessert at morimoto's in NYC (a Japanese restaurant). It was a matcha tiramisu. It was the best thing I've ever eaten in my life.

Well, I mean desserts are tailored to the cultures and people who eat them…not everyone enjoys eating an overly sweet and toothsome Walmart birthday cake.
Desserts in some East Asian cultures are refined indulgences tied with the ruling classes and tea ceremonies. It is about enjoying the space around you with a subtly sweet touch.

EngProfOkstate
Hm, I've never seen East Asian desserts trend.
And yeah, they kind of suck. The lack of desserts (along with next to no dairy) is kind of a defining characteristic of East Asian cuisines. They may add sweetness to dishes, but the concept of a 'dessert' just isn't done there. ((This is one of the things that I LOVE about East asian cuisine. Western desserts usually make me feel icky from the sugary overload and insulin response). In Asia, they may add a little sweetness to things - like in the case of red-bean buns or tamagoyaki, both of which are quite good!, but they don't serve a cake that whose entire flavor profile is sugar with a tad of cream)

I love their desserts. Only issue is the portions are too small for the price.

I waited tables in a Chinese restaurant for almost a year and the owners kids often said Asian desserts suck. It's why the restaurant didn't offer them.

My wife says the same about Chinese desserts, cakes, breads, biscuits... Asia imports a lot of western food for desserts. Only outstanding Chinese dessert I can think of is moon cake.

My chief critique about Asian deserts is that they really enjoy using some weird ass texture in them.
