As an American, I'm not fully sure if a base is necessary.Personally, it improves the United States power.It also provides some protection for the Japanese people.Then again, I do think at least, the Japanese deserve some more public knowledge regarding the base.

The United States helping a country that bombed them and Japan accepting support from a country that took thousands of lives for revenge. However, things do change and people move on.
