I can’t speak for others, only for myself. I’m a 55 year old, disabled woman, living on SSI and food stamps. After I pay my bills on the first, I’m lucky if I have $20 or $30 left, which usually goes for necessities like toilet paper, dish soap, shampoo and other such things.
I haven’t really bought any new clothes is 30 years. Occasionally, I will get something at Goodwill or a yard sale. I buy the cheapest bra I can find, and wear it until it falls apart. The cheapest $3-5 shoes at Walmart. I can never find shoes or bras at Goodwill or yard sales. (I need size 11 womens shoes, and a 48D bra, not easy to find.) My current shoes have lasted me 4 years now. They have holes in the bottom and toes, but I still wear them, because I can’t afford new ones right now.

New stuff is a luxury. Last time I bough a piece of furniture, it was a used loveseat I got for $25, nearly 20 years ago. No new pots or pans. No new dishes. No new electronics. I still have a PS2, one of the big ones, not the small ones you can sometimes find. My cell phone makes calls, and sends texts. Maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll get a smart phone before I die!

I’m careful when I shop. I always buy marked down stuff. I buy dented cans and damaged boxes. We have a salvage grocery that sells the stuff pretty cheap. When I buy meat, I always repackage it into smaller portions. Then I use meat as more of a side dish or accent, not the focus of the meal. Instead of pork chops with a side of rice, I cut a chop into small pieces and mix it into the rice with some veggies and spices.
Pretty much, if there is a way to reuse something, it gets reused. If I can stretch a meal, I will. It’s a careful balancing act.

I will add that non-homeless poor Americans have slowly increasing debt and no savings. They don’t have retirement savings, they don’t have a college fund for their kids, they have multiple credit cards that they are carrying balances and they buy cars and vacations using payment plans. Sometimes, they have a mortgage and they are making the payments on time. If they paid off their home (which is often old and in not so great shape), they may be easily tempted to tap into that equity with a new loan.

Often, being a non-homeless poor person is a balancing act: borrowing from Peter to make just enough of a payment to Paul to get Paul off their back for the next month, searching high and low for new ways to get a few hundred dollars in credit and depositing payments in the mail on the exact day so the creditor will post it just before a late payment is due but late enough so a deposit has as much time as possible to clear.

But now I’ve discovered that because I try to help other people, other people help me. Lots of people have given me clothes, food, furniture, plants, masks; offered advice or help with tasks, repairs, problems; recommended me for jobs, told me about opportunities so if I didn’t need them myself, I could pass the word along to others. I actually don’t consider myself poor, since I know there are so many in the world so much worse off—if my husband complains, I remind him, we live better than 98% of the world’s population (not that we are part of the top 2% but just to tell him he should be glad for what we have). I hope we can have empathy for those less fortunate: we do not live in a war-torn country, we are not refugees, we have not had to abandon all we have worked for, nor lost all we had, due to natural disasters. I have friends who have lost everything in firestorms, here in California.

I live in the poorest county of one of the poorest states in the USA. Tar paper shacks were still here 20 years ago. The economy is based on lobster, clams, winkles, seaweed, salmon, cottage industries, and a small rural hospital (designated border hospital). Many services, such as providing transportation for the elderly, food banks, pet sitting, home repairs, car repairs are handled by the church, community groups and bartering aside from money. There isn’t a driver around who wouldn’t run errands for one of Lillian’s chocolate cakes. This is a hand to mouth existence that we share. The standard of living = we don’t expect to buy $200 pair of tennis shoes, the necessities are certainty covered.
We are very fortunate to have many medical workers from diverse backgrounds. Also, a thriving musical environment of retired and new musicians.
So by other’s perspective, perhaps this simple life might not have the perks they’d desire, but then that’s why they aren’t up here.

I’m going to answer this question anonymously for obvious reasons.
I view myself as poor although others may view me more as frugal. I certainly live like I’m poor!
I live in Boston, MA and make $50,000 per year; I take home $2800 a month. I’m 34 and have only had a salaried job since I was 25. Before 25, I never made more than $10,000 per year. At present, I have $200,000 in my 401K and other investments and $75,000 in savings. I have no debt. As I write more, I want to make it clear that I know that I am not poor; I live like I’m poor however. I am very fortunate to have never had any type of debt, including student debt. I’m also very blessed because my cellphone is on a family plan and my very generous mom pays for it.

I choose to live like I’m poor because I know that I could become poor at any day. I could be laid off from work, diagnosed with a costly illness, etc.

I did it by living outside city limits, but within an undesirable neighborhood. Rent is cheap there, but it's labeled undesirable for a reason. I didn't own a car, I walked to work and borrowed rides for other ventures. On the occasions I did own a car they were super cheap from “buy here pay here” lots which are basically a scam. Your gambling your money on whether your car lasts til the end of the year. First sign of a problem though, you start making plans for how to get around without a car cuz when it finally needs a $300 repair you can't afford, so you just let the car lot repo it and go without for 6 months or so until you get your next beater.

I ate very simple meals, the same thing every meal every day, usually rice, tuna/poached chicken and hot sauce (though tbh I didn't mind it, I got in great shape. This is how bodybuilders eat lol). I often went without water or electricity. I learned how to make a roll of toilet paper last beyond a week. I used dish soap to wash clothes (a teaspoon will do). Didn't purchase any other disposables like paper towel or anything.

I never had any money to spend on fun things, but my friends and I were all poor so we'd learn to have fun just hanging out and BS’ing, we didn't remorse over the fact we couldn't go out to eat or hit the bars or something. I didn't have health insurance of any kind, so I had to think carefully everyday about my health. Extra attention on flossing and brushing. Not doing anything physically risky, and just cross my fingers I didn't develop some random expensive illness beyond my control. Oh also, growing up poor the idea of going to a doctor for something less than life-threatening wasn't even a thought that entered your mind. Even today, now I'm comfy middle class, everyone thinks I'm deranged or stubborn for just riding out illnesses, but truly that's just what makes sense to me.

Drinking tap water, they were all legit concerned for my health and thought I'd develop cancer or some other illness. It's just a different world is all. Stressful, absolutely, but survival mode kicks in and you figure it out.

They've since changed the way your income is factored, because so many people became homeless because they bought food for themselves out of their rent money. They finally realized that rents were expensive and allowed it to be a write off of your income. Now they qualify for the food stamps thankfully, and there's a lot of food pantries and churches that provide food for the poor folks. The average family can afford to pay their bills and eat too.
