Not just Japan. Most developed nations started having less kids. As employers demand more hours for less pay and expenses keep rising. Starting a family becomes a luxury

My brother once visited Japan and stood in a hotel on the countryside which he really enjoyed because he said the ppl there were so kind and lovely. But when he went to Tokyo he was sad to see how dead everyone looked. They all looked so exhausted from long work hrs.

Some people say that to increase the fertility rate in Japan the government has to introduce more holidays and raise wages. While that helps, I think that a major paradigm shift must occur in Japanese work culture. Japanese salarymen and women work so hard not necessarily because they want to, but because it’s “expected” of them. As long as this silly idea that going home on time is “rude” and “hurts the company” continues to fester the fertility rate won’t improve.

I live in Japan and have no hope. There is only a heavy sense of entrapment.
Wages are low for the hours worked in a day, and taxes are levied under various names on the small amount of income. Many people cannot afford to raise children and have to make ends meet.

Apart from increasing childcare and other benefits, they need to change some rules like giving more wages and more holidays to workers. The working environment is so stressful and long, people stressed over livelihoods , don’t have time to meet.

This is a problem in many European countries too. You can't start a family when prices for everything gas, food etc go up and up to the point that you can barely even pay for mortgage anymore.

I think it's more of a modern work culture issue than a purely money issue. While money does matter, time might be what's stopping most from starting families. People in developing countries aren't required to separate work from home life, but modern work means spending most hours of each day away from home with very little time off, especially in places like Japan.

You can't be social or fertile while you are exhausted and stressed. This is a problem in the western culture too, but China and Japan for sure have the worst work-life balance. Add the increasing housing and livng costs and the choice is easy.

Of course it's like this. Young people don't want kids until they're comfortable financially or they don't want them at all. Moreover, having children so early is considered a shameful thing nowadays so obviously it's a lot harder for it to happen.

If you've ever been to Japan you'll see first hand how people are worked to the bone there. Not only are you expected to work over time, but we also had to hang out and drink with our co-workers/bosses after work and if we don't attend, it's seen as disrespectful and lazy. You essentially have 2-3 hours to yourself once you get home (if you're lucky) and then you have to repeat this for the next day and the day following that. There's no time to socialize or focus on relationships. Another note is how women are treated there. Most of them work now since we live in modern times, and yet they still have to carry the full burden of child care and housework by themselves.... no wonder most of them are choosing to focus on their career rather than starting a new family.

I understand that while the shrinking fertility rate is going to cause problems, at the end of the day you just cannot force people to breed if they don't want to. Between the cost of living being too expensive as it is, a nation with an infamously toxic/competitive work culture and a slew of other factors, governments telling citizens that it's their "duty" to their country to reproduce just isn't going to work.

As a Japanese, I believe that some Japanese dream of regaining the Japan of the high economic growth period. They only lament that salaries are low when comparing today's Japan with the past. But that is impossible. What we need to do now is to face reality and solve the problems of an aging society with a declining birthrate, and make Japan a role model for an aging society with a declining birthrate.

Wow. Even during the dark days of Japan during the early 2000s, Tokyo's population was growing stably. The fact that now the population of Tokyo has shrunk really shows how serious this issue is. Documentaries on Japan's declining population appeared in the 2000s, so nothing has changed since then. Unless there is major social change in Japan, we're probably going to see Japan fade away in the coming decades..

there needs to be incentives for people to have children, those living in poverty and who are overworked do not want to have kids.

I live in Italy and we also have this same issue. The number of elder people is always rising and the number of youger people is not catching up. I don’t know Japan very well but I can say for my country that the cause has to do with economy. Too difficult for young people to get stable jobs. Fixed-term jobs are the common rule today, and when a young couple can’t see economical stability in their future they simply don’t procreate.

I think they need to change the work environment so that people work fewer hours per day and can actually have a life outside of work. Even if you're working 8 hours a day it's kind of hard to go out and socialize, date, and meet people etc. More than 8 hours per day and it just becomes impossible. Many Japanese people work 12 hours per day and sometimes more. It's crazy.

I believe Technology plays a major part. I think there's a direct relation between technology and population decline. The more technologically advanced a society is, the more its population declines. Japan is the first evidence. It's the most technologically advanced country and it's population is declining.

Can't blame them.
I'm 26 living in a third world country. I still live with my parents, I work and try to help them and I take care of all of my expenses, but buying a house for me (and most of my friends since they are in the same situation), it's a crazy move.
Can't even think of having children right now, I can barely support myself.
Most of the people around my age are waiting until marriage in order to move out of their parents' house.
Twenty years ago, families would have between 3-5 children. Nowadays, couples only think of one or two and close the factory forever.

It honestly infuriates me seeing older people blame the younger generation on population issues.
It's not that we don't want kids most of us just can't.

Why aren't people having more children?
There's virtually no work life balance, and people who work any less than 60-80 hrs a week are seen by society as worthless. America is having a similar problem, when it comes to family making and the work life balance. Japan also has tight immigration laws. From what I've seen in my own employment throughout the years, immigrants are usually the ones who work the hardest hardest, and often do the work citizens don't wanna take.

This does not need to be viewed as a problem. Many jobs are not necessary, so rather than worry about who's gonna fill them let's just get rid of them.

everything in life needs balance, Japan has lost that balance.
Everyone is working themselves to death with no time to raise a family and no space to raise a family.

That will adversely affect property prices severely. The lack of children related medical facilities in Japan are another huge factor that lead to this. I remember when we were in Japan, my kid was having a mild fever. The only hospitals available were for adults and they did not even accept any child beyond their hospital door. The only way was to call an ambulance and a far away and extremely expensive hospital. It's difficult for young adults with kids to survive in Japan given such inconvenience.

It’s interesting o see if Japan fixes the problem. They have so many problems that are futuristic (for example the economy, culture and population density) so their solution may be used to solve same problems that arise in other countries in the future
