What makes Japan unique? It depends entirely on your own perspective and where you come from but I have a few reasons it’s unique for me, so I’ll list them below. I’ve lived here nearly 15 years so I hope I have a decent insight.
Safety
From a foreign male’s perspective, Japan is unbelievably safe. I don’t think I’ve ever felt threatened or afraid here in 15 years, at any time of the day or night. Of course crime exists, but not on the levels of western countries like my home, Australia.

Cost Of Living
Even though it’s one of the most highly developed and advanced societies in the world, it is amazingly cheap to live here. Forget about the overdramatized bla bla bla about how a watermelon costs $20, Japan is cheap for almost everything, especially basic food, drink and alcohol.

Cheap Housing
Again, forget central Tokyo or Osaka, the cost of a new place in a beautiful area is stunningly cheap. An example? I bought a house last year in Miyazaki, in SW Japan that’s 5 mins from great surfing beaches.
2 storey, 4BR, big outside garden and lovely wood deck for BBQs. The price? USD $220,000. The price for something similar in Australia? Easily pushing the $AUD 1 million mark.
And to top it all off, the interest repayments are locked in at 0.75% for the next 10 years.

Respect
It’s nice to see young people respect older people. Seldom a word out of turn or a disrespectful smirk or smartass backchat. Kids respect elders, no matter how forced or ingrained it is. It is just pushed down through the generations and it works. And damn nice not seeing older people laughed at or victimised or abused or robbed.
Yeah it happens but seldom, especially in public.

尊重 年轻人尊重年长者是件好事。很少有人不守规矩、不尊重或对老人无礼。孩子们尊重长辈，无论这种尊重是出于强迫还是根深蒂固。这种传统代代相传，它起到了作用。而且，很高兴没有看到老年人遭笑话、欺负、虐待或抢劫的情况。

Lack of Vandalism
No graffiti on trains, no spraypaint on public facilities, garbage bins that are clean, public toilets that have mirrors intact…….
Case in point: in Australia near my home, a new skatepark was built for youths. Within 3 days it was painted all over with swear words and body parts and all sorts of puerile crap. Not to mention the litter and trash left there daily.
Here in Miyazaki? There’s a skate park I’ve been to numerous times over 10 years. Never a spot of spraypaint, never a loose blowing paper, never a speck of dirt in a decade! It really is nice.

Absence of Fame Hungry Nitwits on “Reality TV” Shows
I don’t know what’s worse in the west: the TV companies that make drivel such as Celebrity Big Brother and Jersey Shore; the tattoo covered dimwits who seek fast fortune by appearing on them; or the public who feeds the cycle by watching them. All equally culpable?
Thank God they don’t exist on Japanese TV.
That’s probably enough for now, but as I bring up my young family, I’m more than happy to remain in Japan for the foreseeable future.

I think we are the same as everybody else.
We are a bit obsessed with hygiene, think other people first before yourself in order to live comfortably, keep the rules, do your assigned job properly, stick to manuals, do as other people do because the most of the time it would be safer to follow others and above all, you do not stick out from the crowds otherwise you would be hammered out, try not to speak out what you really think, keep it in your mind.
That’s probably why we have a functional transport system, good service, non-chaotic society, everybody happy ever after.
Occasionally, people commit suicide but that’s OK, better than killing others before killing oneself.
Other than that, we are the same as you!

once I dropped my wallet, carrying around 50,000 yen and almost all important cards, in a busy market. I came home only to realise that I don’t have money to pay for anything. And then i get a call from police. They confirmed the identity and handed it over to me.
While buying food items in a supermarket, the egg carton was dropped by mistake. I already had paid for items and was arranging stuff in my bag. Being embarrassed, I tried to clean the table with towel kept there while the one of the lady staff came a started apologising. She not only exchanged a new one but also cleaned the table later on. She said that customer can choose another one if they get something damaged inside super market.

You’re privacy is utmost importance no matter where you are. In return, you’re expected to do the same for others.
You can shout at your boss after getting drunk or do silly things in party and it ends there. Nothing happened last evening and it was a fun party.
If you’re a foreigner, they will make sure that you understood everything so you have to accompany an interpreter if you don’t know Japanese.
Nobody will walk stubborn on streets rather they give you way apologizing for their mistake.
Hit and run is considered worst thing and one might have to pay in tens of millions if caught doing it. So even a minor scratch is reported to police.
Japan is clean,beautiful, full of visiting places every where, well mannerd and ultra polite. They work hard only to make things easy (pretty contrast). Technologically, you can find almost any contemporary gadgets/facilities in the nearby town/city. When it comes to life, you’re almost certain how your next month or year going to be. Having a clean adminitrative system, you will get for the amount of hard-work you have done for your daily life or dreams.

One of the most striking features of Japan is its strong sense of tradition and cultural identity. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), defined in the manufacturing sector as those having capital below ¥300m ($3m) or fewer than 300 employees, represent 99.7% of companies in Japan, which is one of the highest in the world. Probably, only France ranks higher with the number at 99.8%.
But that is not all.

But you do give anyone his possibility for his own zone. You give way for people you meet. You wear mask in case you feel a flue has caught you.

But following the tradition of football, the Belgians won the best team game in football, winning this match 3 consecutive goals with a difference of 3-2.
For some time before the Japan's rise to a strong team like Belgian, the Japanese audience, who rained on the peak of joy, cried in the last half an hour.
