78 might work on some days when I’m home and sedentary at my desk. But as a woman in her hot flash season I am NOT setting it higher than 76 at night if I plan on getting any sleep! And I wouldn’t dream of leaving a pet at home in 85 degrees. Good god.

Same! My heart literally can’t handle the temp being too high. If people can find those high temps comfortable that is great for them but there are plenty of us with medical conditions that make it quite dangerous. A more reliable and upgraded power grid would be a great solution for everyone!

When I was a kid I spent many summer nights tossing and turning, sweating all night in a 2nd floor bedroom in a house with no a/c, not even a window unit anywhere.
Now I have a much smaller house with central air. When my sister lived here she tried to abide by a modified version of those temps, and I couldn’t sleep. I’d end up adjusting it to cool the place down and I kept telling her that I have a place where I have a/c and I am not going to lay awake hot and sweaty every night that the temps are way up. I use a fan but there comes a time when even a good fan is of no use.

The only reason living in (and you know our winters are no joke, Alberta here) and the reason I keep ANY heat on in the winter is so my precious dog baby doesn’t turn into a pupsicle and that my pipes don’t freeze. Or I’d be happy as a clam with no heat! Now flip that switch to summer and pets can and will die if left in a house too hot, same with humans. I’ve been a vegan for over 20 years, grow my own produce, compost and repeat. I don’t own a car, I bike (bicycle). My carbon footprint is so incredibly small that I think I can make myself and my little companion comfortable for a couple months on and off using the air conditioner we have in ONLY one room of our 4 bedroom, 5 bath house. But please if I’m wrong tell me more of what I can do? And I’ll honestly let you know if I’m already doing that. But I suppose no matter what someone will take issue with you.

You absolutely wouldn’t be fine with no heat. I guarantee you’d die in your sleep. Turning your heat off in your house for a day is nothing compared to turning it off for a week or even months in winter. It was -40 Celsius / -40 degrees Fahrenheit in Alberta this past January. You may be able to tolerate cold of 5 or 10 degrees less more comfortably than the average Canadian but you’re not a polar bear.

I live in Arizona it’s 114 degrees I have my thermostat set at 78. If we all set our thermostats at 68 we wouldn’t afford our electric bills in the summer.

My thermostat has never seen any number higher than 68, even in winter!! If my house was 85 degrees anytime of year, I would be calling to get it fixed ASAP!! I even put in window units during the summer (I have a central A/C too) cuz I live in a place where outside feels like sitting in a bowl of hot soup under a broiler

3) I work in a hot as fuck manufacturing plant. I will not let the only place I have my preferred climate controlled comfort be my 15 minute commute in my truck.

Just going to toss this out there because your average citizen keeping their homes cool are a small part of the issue. I know the below statement sounds crazy but yet 100% true.
Data centers usually use a lot of energy to maintain their servers. They consume about 1,000 kWh per square meter. This is about ten times the power consumption of a typical American home.
For sure though the 5 to 8degrees is the issue.. Yes our founding fathers would be ashamed that the US citizen personal data and privacy get robbed every day by servers that also use 10X the energy…
