And toyota Corolla's new PHEV model will use BYD DMi hybrid system, Toyota use to be leading in hybrid technology now have to use BYD hybrid system. This tells us a lot about why the japanese auto market is in decline.

Japan auto industry is in trouble, it's too rigid in its own ways, really don't like change or admitting they got something wrong.
Honda for example, they're so deluded they think selling a base model Civic for $48k is a good idea. No more Jazz, no more City, no more Odessey. Basically, nothing under $40k if you want a Honda vehicle, with piss poor options, and one of the lowest warranty on the market, then they wonder why people look elsewhere.
I loved my little 2013 Civic hatch, zippy little 4 banger that was cheap and cheerful motoring with a 6-speed manual box. Now that it's time to move it on, I'm saying hello to a BYD Seal soon.

Here in Aruba, I see every day Neta, Haval, BYD, and a bunch if other Chinese EVs, they are slowly but surely taking over. I own a Honda civic and a CRV, I love both of these cars, but my next car will be an EV, not even a hybrid.

I think it is a good thing that Chinese EVs are flooding the global car market. For years, we have had to put up with stupid, money-hungry, and now low-quality European vehicles. Although Japan produces high-quality cars, they are also overpriced. Now that Chinese EV cars are entering the market with gradually improving quality, better design, and lower purchase prices, I believe this is a good thing and a game changer. I see some European and Japanese car manufacturers going bankrupt if they do not exercise caution and begin to consider competing with Chinese car manufacturers, as Tesla is currently doing. So European car manufacturers, such as Mercedes-Benz, which currently produce very low-quality engine cars, must get their act together. I believe BMW and the Volkswagen Group will be the most likely European car manufacturers to be around for a long time. I don't see Mercedes-Benz surviving for too long due to their poor quality, cost-cutting of their engines, and now too many plastic interiors. Samething happening here in Indonesia (Hello there Thai Neighbour), in terms of EV, Toyota's most affordable EV option BZ4X costs 80,000 USD compared to the cheapest Chinese option BYD M6 is only 23,000 USD. Toyota is currently not competitive at all in the EV market, dark days are coming for Toyota.

I live in a condo in Thailand about 250 km east of Bangkok. Two of our visitor parking spots have been converted to EV charging so we have lost visitor parking so now visitors park in the street when spots are full. I have never seen one car use the EV charging. There are EVs parked here but they dont charge here. I susoect they charge at their work.
I can walk to a new byd showroom.

I live in Thailand and in the market for a new car right now. We trust the Japanese cars to be very reliable and could last decades.
However, we chose Chinese car instead because it provides all the features we want. It is not cheap, but it could cost 1.5-2 times more if we choose Japanese one.
Also, it looks better too. All Japanese cars look like they have been designed in the 90s and never really wanna change.
The Chinese really go all in with everything at cheaper prices.
I don’t mind if the car is hybrid or purely electric. But the Japanese must really up their game in terms of price, looks and features in order to compete.

The last time I was in Thailand (2019?) I saw a lot of Korean cars, especially taxis. My guess is that Japan was already losing market share prior to EVs.

I use japan gasoline daihatsu car since 2012, still have it until today. But i just bought Chinese ev car for about USD12,000. Why? Because the oil price is getting crazy, ev car can run in the same range as gasoline car for about 10-20% less cost.
