As an army veteran this is extremely embarrassing for military aviation. There is absolutely no reason that Blackhawk should have been anywhere near a civilian airport to begin with. It's one thing when two planes collide, but a helicopter and a plane should never come into contact with each other the helicopter pilot has to be smarter than that.

I flew into National Airport in January 13th, 1982 about two hours before the Air Florida Flight 90 crashed into the Potomac...I had crossed the 14th Street Bridge and got back to my dorm room and turned on the TV to see the news. IT was horrible. I hate driving crossing the 14th Street Bridge to this very day

Did one of the aircraft not have TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System)? Passenger planes have this and if the system detects 2 aircraft are on a collision path it will tell one to go up and the other to go down to avoid the collision.

I was a helicopter pilot, of course fixed winged craft (especially a large passenger airliner) would have right of way, a chopper can instantly lose altitude to avoid a collision - sources I've heard said the blackhawk was doing a 'training exercise" (in a civilian area?) is atrocious, especially in a well-known path for commercial air traffic. being the nature of the military chopper - I'm certain the Airline pilots didn't see it at all - and/or had absolutely no way to avoid the collision - the Air Traffic

I used to live on Boling AFB which is located right across the river from National Airport. A lot of planes flew right over the base to land on the secondary runway, flights landing on the main runway fly an approach straight down the Potomac River. Looks like this collision occurred while making the approach over Boling. There are military helicopters operated by the Navy and Marines on Joint base Boling which is also home the Presidential Helicopter fleet.

MAYBE what happened was the Blackhawk was focusing on the plane taking off and didn’t realize there was an incoming plane, until it was too late. Did night goggles hinder? Which would have impaired their peripheral vision? Not sure. Tragic all around …

Military and Commercial aviation share airspace all of the time. The video shows the helicopter maintaining its altitude at 400/500'. The Airliner was given the approval by ATC to land. and they proceeded to reduce their altitude to prepare for landing. The accident occurred approximately at 450'/500' according to the last ADS-B signal from the Jet. The jet cannot see below/behind them and the copter cannot see above them at these speeds until it is too late. ATC should have had an opportunity to alx both aircrafts of their proximity, however there is a tremendous amount of traffic at KDCA, it is extremely busy for an ATC controller.

I’m here in Australia and I can’t imagine what the family and friends of the victims are going through but to me it seems like a military helicopter made a stupid mistake and crashed into a commercial airplane landing at a major airport..
