China's health care system has recently come to public consciousness in the U.S. with “TikTok Refugees” on Red Note comparing healthcare in the two countries.
On today's China report, KJ is joined by Dr. Margaret Flowers and author Mimi Zhu, and the three discuss health care in China and contrast it with that of the U.S.'s privatized system.
Our understanding of China — and U.S.-China relations — has become a defining feature of all global politics. The China Report is a new show produced in collaboration with Pivot to Peace where every week, journalist Amanda Yee and political analyst KJ Noh will be helping you through all the propaganda with an independent view of the country we are taught to hate, but know so little about.

Unless you're rich or a vip - health care in the US is sick

Luigi Guy

Don't say "privatized". it is "profitized." Money superceeds everything. It is dehumanizing and has left most people who undergo treatment in this industrialized private healthcare system feeling dehumanized. The United States is a sick place.

@Seeker2324
It is CORPORATISED.
This is not service provided by doctors working in their own surgeries as small private businesses. In fact, independent family practitioners are disappearing in the U.S. as the system of insurance payments will no longer fund exploding rents and personel in these small surgeries, which are closing down, and family practitioners are now forced to go and work for vast, corporate run surgeries.

My friends invited me to guangzhou in 2016, I was staying in a hotel in CBD. We were roaming , eating for a week.
One night at around 1 pm I had severe stomache, I called my friend who was staying nearby for emergency visit to hospital. He asked me to wait and arranged medicine directly from nearby hospital .Within 20 minutes I had my medicine. The bottle has 2 capsule of Pantop D. I was relieved.
Chinese healthcare system is really awesome.

If you were in Canada, you’d be waiting in the waiting room for 26hours or longer before a doctor attends to you. There are warning signs on the hospital walls reminding people to stay calm and not turn violent (from inhumane waiting).

As of this moment, everything is overpriced in US. From Eggs to homes to EVs to Insurance to Healthcare....
The only thing that is not overpriced is "wages"....and all these to benefit a few elites....at the expense of the working class.
For those who still believe that tariffs are a tax on the exporting nation.....you need to go back to school.

@LW78321
The poor quality of the US "healthcare" is honestly so shocking

@SlytherinShark888
American here. America is hell. There’s no reason to sugarcoat it. We’re not a country. We’re a company. 60,000 people die per year due to lack of adequate healthcare. My mother died at 51 and my father at 47 because of a lifetime of inadequate healthcare. I have a master’s degree, own my own business, and an 810 credit score, and I still struggle with health care costs because of my “family history.”

@charlenegraham1923
Very informative and I know it's true because my daughter's best friend became very ill during a summer internship in China and paid a total of $5 for care and medicine. Also, my daughter worked in Japan for two years with no vacation (she could take up to 5 days off but had to work double time before and after to cover the shifts of those who had covered hers) so she was unable to visit home in California for those 2 years. The same company in Beijing offered a month off each year, paid shuttle to work, free lunch, and much nicer and newer housing. Makes me wonder.

@leonpse
Also, I know it’s true, because in America, we have paid hundreds of thousands for healthcare for parents.

@mystictraveler8642
America don't even have basic asian standards. When westerners go to asia, they live so well. Affordable and luxurious at the same time.

@MarkJLovas
Talking about the need for an "advocate" in the context of the USA medical system is a cruel evasion. It lets the system off the hook, when the system should be condemned. I was physically present to help my mother in the last years of her life, and they called me an "advocate", a label I rejected. What I did was everything I could possibly do, it I did more than most people can do--on account of their jobs. What I did was not enough. I could not save my mother from the cruelty and inhumanity of my system, and neither my mother nor I got the respect we deserved. The word "advocate" is a nasty, lying evasion. To be an "advocate" is not a solution because you will be surrounded by countless individuals who will always, in the end, serve the demands of capital.

@rajj92
Really wish this had more views. It’s so clear and easy to see the faults of us health care and I feel like its roots in the problem are with the insane education impediments that the US maintains to help keep class division. If education were free we’d have no issue with workforce in these impacted fields, but the chain of businesses that run our social system are what keep us in a constant turmoil

@WavyLena
Wow I actually started crying when she said the total was only 3 US dollars - the way i have been putting off health care bc it's so expensive

My dentist is also practicing in the US. I was shocked that she told me that insurance required her to take out a tooth and either implant or recommend a denture rather than treat and repair an otherwise treatable and repairable tooth! Insane!

Prescxtions are free?! That's amazing! No one ever talks about the affordability of healthcare in Scotland

@Seeker2324
But the NHS is so stretched that my GP surgery in Edinburgh has stopped monitoring blood pressure or blood sugars. When I see my GP, he no longer routinely takes my BP, and there is no regular blood work.
Health monitoring was one of the major advances in preventive medicine, so that people did not turn up with renal failure or MI’s because they had long-term undetected and untreated hypertension or diabetes. By cutting this, it provides short term respite for over-burdened GP’s, but will create a much larger financial burden further down the line as the NHS will be presented with an explosion of chronic disease because these were left to develop.

@leonpse
Think worse care and paying twice as much for it, if in United States. Pay twice as much for less care.

I was already impressed by what I’ve been seeing on RedNote.The video of the hospital blew me away! No wonder China’s life expectancy continues to climb while the U.S. continues to regress to early 20th-century levels.

I lived in China and now in the US. I used to think the way you pay first and then get treated in China was a bit cold. But now every time I get a medical bill from the mailbox I have a minor panic. I certainly don’t mind paying first these days.

@inkbold8511
The Chinese government advocates on behalf on their citizens to get lower cost for medications nd healthcare services, whereas in the U.S. the government is in cohort with the big business that operates the hospitals to make sure there are no competition in their field all the while charge the maximum cost to their citizens.

@tlaka
The former Mexican president said he was building a Healthcare system as good as Dinamark's. He never explained why it was so good as far as I know. But it's part of Mexican culture that everything in Europe is amazing, even if they don't know anything about it. He also, always , when he spoke about China, made a diminishing comment , unnecessary , almost like an unconscious reflect. Also, very typical of Mexican culture. With Trump back in the Supremacist House , Mexican analysts still say But Stay Wary of China. Lopez Obrador had no idea of who has the best Healthcare System.

US and UK public health system are a shame.
Learn from Singapore, Malaysia, and of course China , ie if these US and UK Government are not too proud to learn from people who are proven better than them.

The reason hospital charges are high in US, because you are paying for the doctors insurance in case they get sued

@Seeker2324
No : it’s because they are paying for corporate profits at every turn, from drugs (the U.S. government is not allowed to negotiate directly with drug companies regarding drug charges, so patients pay far more for drugs MADE IN THE US than Canadians across the border) to ambulances to hospital beds to corporations employing doctors on a salary to private insurance and on and on.
Scales of charges are almost totally unregulated. There is a reason why Mangione shot a healthcare insurance executive and half the nation cheered.

What I remember of China was that in every park you can find groups practice tai chi, qigong or dance etc and you can join in no problem. My grandmother she practiced tai chi every morning and at the age of 76 she could lift me up - I was 18 at that time, not a child! I have tried traditional Chinese medicine and it´s really POWERFUL except it didn´t taste good to be honest So I believe the Chinese way of health approache
