Refueling a gas car takes 5 minutes. How long does it take to refuel an electric car?

This is the “gotcha” that petrol (gas) car drivers love to bring up, and EV owners realize quickly isn’t a gotcha at all.

Now, when I was still using a petrol car, I would generally fill it up once per week, and that would take, as you say, 5 minutes. So with an EV, I’m saving about 4.5 minutes a week vs. a petrol car.

But here’s the thing, and there’s really no getting around this……

Who cares?

An awful lot of people have bought into the “time is money” nonsense, and optimizing every second of your life is of critical importance, but while they suggest they think like that, people don’t actually live their lives that way.

I spent 5 minutes sat on the pot reading after I finished my morning shit today.

The fact that for me, EVs are five minutes a week faster to fill up, really has zero impact on my life.

That sounds like a really good argument against having an EV, until you realize that it assumes some things that are not true.

First — most people have electricity at home. Most cars are driven from home to various nearby places and then home again for well over 95% of their miles. Darned few people routinely drive more than the 300 mile range before returning home. So, most of the time you’re going to plug it in at home.

This means that you spend a LOT less time, as well as less money, feeding the energy needs of your vehicle.

Second — when you’re driving longer distances, darned few of us go more than 300 miles without stopping for food.

EV chargers are generally not at gas stations. I’ve never seen one there. They ARE generally at or near a place where you would either stop for the night, or stop for a meal.

A full charge on a high speed charger takes about 20 minutes. So does eating a meal.

MUCH more pleasant than some nasty gas station. Especially if you also need to empty your own personal “tank.” Gas station bathrooms can be... better skipped.

Well, I have to confess, it recently got about twice as bad for me.

I used to have a Leaf, and the charging port was up front, right next to the cable. It took a (measured) 3 seconds to plug in, and 3 more to unplug.

My new EV has charging on the passenger side at the rear quarter, and it takes me 6 (SIX!) seconds to walk round and plug it in. Worse, sometimes I get INTO the car before unplugging, and it reminds me to unplug before it will power up, then I have to take TEN SECONDS to get back out and unplug. The WASTE of time!

If I could train myself to look before I get in, it would take around 12 seconds to charge once per week, a little under 1 minute a month, about 10 minutes per year.

Also, I never have to go for an oil change, a smog check, a tune up, and brakes are probably good for well over 100k miles (because of electrical regen braking). Plus it’s quiet, doesn’t stink up the garage with fumes starting cold, doesn’t warm the garage with 2kWh of heat from the engine block in the evening (a bedroom is over the garage, and stays much cooler).

Phil Scovis
I'm usually asleep when the EV is refueling. Why, how much sleep do you get when refueling your ICE?

This question formula is becoming tedious. Suppose we were to ask instead: “A F-100 can carry a pounds pounds of lumber. How much lumber can a Camry carry?” The implied answer being that Camrys have an unresolvable limitation that makes them completely useless; they should not logically exist; checkmate, end of discussion, mic drop.

Look, if you routinely need to transport lumber, you shouldn't get a Camry. And if you routinely need to travel over 200 miles a day without a one-hour break, then you shouldn't get an EV.

Is it okay with you if different people with different needs choose different cars?

While awkward, a Camry with the rear seat down can fit four 8-foot 2x4s laid from the trunk to the passenger foot well.

On the very rare occasions I have to use a public charger it might take a couple of minutes extra, as there’s often an app to log into and pay. But many of them also just have a card reader, so as soon as you’re plugged in you just wave your card at it and you’re done.

Nobody sits by their car and waits for it to charge. You charge it while the car is parked and you’re off doing other stuff. So the only time it costs you is plugging and unplugging.

I’ve driven a lot of petrol/diesel cars over the years and honestly an EV is less hassle. 99% of the time you start the journey with more than enough range in the car for the day’s driving. You never have to think about making a visit to a petrol station to refuel, and I don’t miss that at all.

My girlfriend and I took a trip from Philadelphia to Ithica, NY in my Ioniq. In the way up, we had to stop to recharge in Binghamton.

It took about 45 minutes to charge from 10% to 100%.

It took us about 45 minutes to get a nice stretch and eat a meal. After eating, we hopped into a fully charged car and completed our trip.

The people that talk about how long it takes to charge an EV rarely ever mention the time it takes to recharge themselves during a long drive.

I have done other interstate drives with the Ioniq. Unless I am in a rush where I would be eating while driving, the charging time really does not add much time at all to the trip. Yes, it does require a little more planning, but it's not like it is difficult. Hell, Google maps has EV charging stations listed and can navigate from one station to the next. Now that almost all EVs in the US come with NACS plugs, it will be even easier.

Damon Kaswell
Usually, it doesn't. Take time, that is.

I charge mine while I'm sleeping, so the only time it takes out of my day is the time to unplug it.

On the rare occasions when my family and I are going farther than its range can handle, I'll plan a pitstop along the route at a fast charger to charge it while we're doing things we'd need to do anyway, like use the bathroom, eat some lunch, and walk the dogs if they're coming with us.

Given that it's a four-person family and two dogs, we'll get quite a lot of charge before we're actually ready to hit the road again.

Jim Guibault
But they’re not looking at the whole picture. They stop at a gas station at least once a week, and I’ll bet that with going out of their way, waiting in line, and going to the bathroom it takes an more like ten minutes each time. But let’s grant them their five minute estimate. I recharge my EV most every night at home, when the rates are super cheap, and it costs me virtually no time because the plug is between my car and the door. So each day I start with a full “tank,” and only have to recharge on the road when I’m driving longer distances. So let’s say an EV driver has to recharge on a long trip eight times per year, and the gasoline driver has to refill the tank the same number of times on longer trips (just to keep the math simple).

If it takes me 30 minutes to recharge at a service station, that means I’m spending about four hours per year waiting on my car to charge. The gasoline car driver has refilled 60 times for a total of 300 minutes, or five hours. So I’m actually saving time over them. Make their stops ten minutes each, which I believe is more accurate, and I’m spending less than half the time “refueling” as they are.

Yes, I realize that some people have to drive long distances more often, and for them there will be a “total time” penalty, but for most drivers the time difference is in favor of the EV. And there’s absolutely no question that the cost difference massively favors the EV.

Jim Mowreader
Most people who have electric cars also own chargers for them. Since they plug the car in as soon as you get home and leave it on charge - it won’t damage the battery to do that because the computer in the car tells the charger’s computer to shut down when the battery is full - the amount of time to recharge the car is really immaterial.

If your typical day’s driving is less than the charge your battery will hold, charging is really immaterial as to whether an electric or liquid-fueled car is better for you.

Charging comes into play when you routinely drive long distances…like, say, you drive from New York to Boston and back every day. Then charging DOES come into play, and you’d be better off with a liquid-fueled car.

I get home, plug the car in, walk into my home. That takes about 5 seconds.

In the morning, I unplug and hang up the cable, get in the car and leave. That takes another 5 seconds.

When I fill my ICE, I can’t plug in a fuel nozzle and walk away.

Twice or so a year, I’ll take my Tesla out on a trip to visit my dad a little over 300 miles away over the Appalachians, which sucks up energy (though I get a lot of it back on the downslopes). I have to stop a couple times (Model 3 basic) each way. Takes about 10–15 minutes each stop (usually my phone tells me it’s ready in about 10 but I like to let it charge a bit longer). With my ICE, usually one stop to refill. So for a round trip, my ICE takes less time, about 10 minutes (one stop each way) compared to 40–60 minutes (two stops each way, but really is closer to 40 to 45 minutes).

So when doing the math, taking the Tesla adds over 30 minutes to my round trip (which is 11 to 12 hours)

I have the option to take either my ICE or Tesla on that trip. I still take the Tesla. Cheaper, easier to drive (with the Tesla doing most of the steering/lane keeping), and more fun to drive. Each stop really doesn’t seem to take that long at all.

But sure, everyone knows on road trips, it will take longer to charge an EV than to fill a gas tank. Over 99% of my EV driving is local however, and it takes me less than 10 seconds to recharge.

Ok here's a take.

You have a smartphone, don't you?

1. How long does it take to completely charge up from empty to full?

You don't even know because it’s not relevant. You charge it overnight and it gets you through the day, that's all that matters. Who cares how long it takes if you're asleep whilst it happens?

2. Would you swap it for a phone that you could charge from empty in 5 minutes, and lasted twice as long between charges, but you could only recharge it by going out of your way to a special building and paying 10x as much instead of just plugging it in at home?

Only if you had some very specialised requirements. Or were an idiot.

3. Petrol stations are a marginal business at the best of times. How many will still be open when demand has halved and half the cars on the road are electric?

I don't even have an electric car, but when I get one I'm not going to miss driving to the fucking petrol station.

Kevin Davidson
14 seconds. That’s how long it takes to plug my car in when I get home and unplug it when I leave.

Everybody has their own situation, a comparison should encompass all the factors, not just plug-in time at a public charging station.

On the 2–3 times a year when I drive far enough to have to charge on the road, it might take 10 - 20 minutes. But I can get something to eat and visit the restroom during that time.

In the county where I live there are only three gas stations, so a trip to one might take much longer than just filling the tank. And there are long stretches of I-70 in West Virginia with no gas stations close to the highway.

Phil Hodge
Refueling a gas car takes longer than 5 minutes.

You forget the time it takes you to drive to the station. Then the time it takes to drive back.

I get home and park in my normal place. It takes me 5 seconds to plug in the charger. Next time I get in the car it's all charged up.

Much quicker than a gas car. Much less hassle. And much cheaper.

Hope this helps.

Jeff Lee
I don't think that is the correct question. How many wasted hours per year waiting on your vehicle might be appropriate question.

In seven years, I have spent almost zero minutes wasted versus the 60 hours for an owner of an internal combustion engine, because I never leave the house without a full charge and I never spend more than 5 seconds clicking my connector/charger when I get home. If I travel a few hundred miles in the Midwest, I drive by hundreds of locations and usually pick one at a restaurant, grocery store, hotel, or a place I am stopping for a rest room, and by the time I get back to my car, (15 minutes) it is finished.

Paul Dutton
I’m so glad I no longer have a diesel car. Yes, I could refuel in 5 minutes and drive 300 miles but I often got smelly fuel on my hands and had to wash them too.

These days the car often recharges overnight while I am asleep and on a cheap rate of electricity and then I can drive 300 miles so from my perspective the time is around a minute plugging and unplugging.

If I am driving a long distance and using public chargers I plan my route to include a charging hub with good facilities. I have a break and food or drink and a bit of a rest for half an hour (healthy in itself) and then return to my fully charged car and continue.
