It seems cold but it's not. Your odds of survival or being rescued in the open ocean drops dramatically after only a few hours and a man overboard is treated as an enormous emergency. It's likely after x number of hours they had to decide his odds of survival were almost 0 and their odds of finding him the same. With no flotation device or water type outfit, he probably died of hypothermia pretty quickly.

I’ve always wondered how ships collide with other ships, you have huge windows to look out and have a huge sea to operate in but we still manage to hit other ships, like how can’t the captain see another ship from a far distance away and radio them to move out of the way before they get close???

I’m retired Navy and was involved in many underway replenishments. That was part of my duty. Unless you’ve seen it firsthand, it’s hard to believe how close those gigantic ships get to each other to be able to do this. I hate this happened

Im gonna defend our military and say the supply ship was schedule to resupply the destroyer but the torrents were rough and the crew of the destroyer were havin difficulty. The ocean is very unpredictable. The most experienced sailors would tell you this can happen in any fleet

Those maneuvers at sea are usually done safely but there can always be unpredictible elements at work. I participated in some of them back in the 80's. Unfortunate for that lost sailor.

It seems cold but it's not. Your odds of survival or being rescued in the open ocean drops dramatically after only a few hours and a man overboard is treated as an enormous emergency. It's likely after x number of hours they had to decide his odds of survival were almost 0 and their odds of finding him the same. With no flotation device or water type outfit, he probably died of hypothermia pretty quickly.
