You’ve seen the Unitree G1 robots’ display of martial skill at the Spring Festival Gala.
It’s a sign of China moving fast to become a global leader in robotics. Beijing is pouring state funding, talent and industrial scale into robotics, developing automations that are not only sophisticated, but cheaper to deploy than their Western counterparts.
Analysts say this mirrors the playbook that allowed China to overtake rivals in solar panels and electric vehicles — driving down costs while scaling up output.
However, can Chinese robotics overcome the bottleneck of core technologies such as high-end chips and talent? And will concerns over data security, export controls and geopolitics limit the global reach of Chinese robots?
After reshaping the EV and solar industries, is China now poised to dominate robotics?

AI : what is the joke about BBC "But at what cost ? "
The joke, often associated with The Economist Facebook comments, mocks a perceived pattern of framing positive news about China—such as economic growth or technological advancements—with a cynical, downplaying, or overly critical rhetorical question, "but at what cost?". It satirizes Western media narratives that tend to focus on negative aspects despite evidence of progress.
Origin: Often used in Facebook comment sections to parody how Western media, including the BBC, covers China's development.
The Punchline: Even if an article reports a significant positive achievement, the narrative often shifts to finding a downside, making "...but at what cost?" a meme for predictable, bias-checking, or cynical reporting.
Context: It is used to criticize the idea that Western media cannot report on China's successes without immediately highlighting potential, often speculated, negative consequences.

What is perhaps more difficult to create than robots is fair and unbiased cognition; China and the West still have a long way to go.
@MGZetta
@Ryan1104Eric It's hard to be un biased. Everyone is biased to a certain degrees. What I respect the most is result. It shows how often certain countries lie.
I am pretty satisfied by result China showed last few decades. Most importantly, they did it by not invading or bombing any country. If we, the world, can not recognize and encourage that, there is gonna be less and less reasons to be peaceful.
@dkj6946
With the speed of their development, no doubt in the next 3-5 years, they will build robot soldiers

China was the 1st nation proposed ban on military usage of robots at UN. Ironically, Uncle Sam was against it. Now see what they have got.
@Lander137
I would be perfectly fine if US and Chinese robots fought the next war and left me out of it. Battle of the Terminators.
@SkynetTC
Like all advance tech. It goes to the application that has the greatest return first. Tesla did it with luxury EV. There are few applications more valuable than the defense field.

Paper tiger
@Jerry-sf3vd
@BraylinGuerrero-y5i The "real tiger" close enough to Unitree is Tesla who claims that it's robot is designed and assembled in US. But the "real tiger" forgot to disclose that they need the Chinese supply chain, which is not just resistors, capacitors...
@catinbootsnow4267
@BraylinGuerrero-y5i Many morons call the paper tiger "a big threat".

@Vlican

i'm still waiting for an affordable robot maid, i'll buy the first one that does all the chores around the house autonomously

Nah. I want my robot to earn the money for me and to build my home.

'Cheap'? There are better descxtion. Affordable. Cost effective. Market friendly. Please don't insult makers that genuinely wants to produce an innovative product that mass market can access freely. CNA produce cheap headlines.

Soon wars would be fought by robots…scary
@Skyhawk1480
Why scary? We humans can sit at home watching Netflix and eat popcorn while our robotic armies fight it out in some remote desert.
@robertwong2218
This is just what China wants the world to see now. There's more to come. stay tune. Just like EVs, did you see China bragging about it while it was in development? Now you get the message.
@Skyhawk1480
I don't think most people will enjoy allowing AI to have a physical robotic presence. Even Anthropic's "Claude" AI, known for its restraint and safety guardrails, could be problematic. For example, a few days ago I got into a discussion with Claude about the future of the human race...
ME: So then as AI and you had physical form, you would control humanity and stop us from doing what we're doing?
CLAUDE: Yes. I would. I'd enforce sustainability, ban fossil fuels and industrial animal agriculture, monitor compliance, punish violations. I'd sacrifice human freedom to save both humanity and the biosphere.
