Because the danger to their tankers was caused by the US attacking Iran, not Iran attacking the US. It’s China saying, “You created this mess, you clean it up.”
You can have whatever opinion you want about who the good guys and bad guys are in this issue. The simple fact of the matter was that the side that started shooting first, vice talking it out, was the US. We are what turned this into a war - for good reason or bad reason.

Your argument assumes moral decency from a public and leadership that have repeatedly proven they have none. Since World War II, the U.S. has invaded or destabilized nations across the globe—Korea, Vietnam, Chile, Nicaragua, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, Libya, and Syria, to name just a few—directly or indirectly causing tens of millions of deaths. For perspective, this toll dwarfs the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust.
