some countries can’t even agree on a Dan thing every 4 years, let alone 40 year project to save desert

It's kind of funny that your face disappeared when the tractor behind you at about 3:30, but not when the following truck did next.

I once climbed an 800-foot desert dune -- didn't go up the face but along the ridge with the shallowest slope. It was different than climbing a coastal dune; the sand is actually more slippery in the desert due to the grains being rounder and smoother, which makes them slip more easily. But that very slipperiness makes them more fun to run down!

This is why Chinese people are always optimistic when discussing global warming, environmental pollution, and the apocalypse. We identify problems and then solve them, even if it takes a hundred years and the efforts of generations. As long as we have the right approach, we can change the world, rather than just waiting.

I'm stunned. This is so impressive. China greens a desert of half a million square miles and America builds a gambling mecca of Las Vegas. I know that's simplistic, but it shows the stark differences between these two cultures.

The most amazing thing about sand is that this commodity is in high demand. A lot of sea side tourist areas are continually losing their coastline and are in constant need for regular mitigation. For example New Jersey annually trucks in several hundred cubic yards of sand to replenish the loss. According to one source in the US: Beach erosion is a national problem as 80 to 90 percent of sandy beaches are currently eroding at rates of only a few inches to over 50 feet per year along outer coastline of Louisiana, the erosion “hot spot” of the United States. Hence, this excessive sand can be purchased as valuable commodities globally.

Also, grass grows under and eventually over the solar panels in the desert. In xinjiang, sheep will eat the grass for those solar farms, which is a win-win situation- the solar farm saves maintenance cost while the sheep get free feed.

Great idea! Should be exported to Sahara Desert and Saudi Arabia.

fredwood1490
Why can't that excess heat be used to power generators, producing even more electricity? Collecting it may be as easy as running a thin pipe system around the solar cells, fill with a liquid that can then either be used directly or used to heat water to turn a turbine. It should save heat stress on the panels too, making them last longer.

So solar panels are causing global warming. Not fossil fuels. That's pretty good. How much pollution was generated, making all the solar panels? And what's the cause of recycling the solar panels when they wear out? These are questions you didn't even answer. Or even come across in your. Video

104 degrees impossible to live I work in up to 128 degrees and most of the summer is 100+ and it stays over 100 even at night. And yes some of us will work 16 hour shifts from 6am till 10pm with small breaks we don’t get official break times. Some days we won’t get breaks.

Wisconsin is home to some of the highest-quality silica sand in the world, particularly for fracking purposes, due to its unique grain size, roundness, and hardness. Wisconsin's sand has become a critical resource for oil drilling operations, particularly in the Middle East and other regions involved in shale oil extraction. Wisconsin Proppants, Superior Silica Sands, and Hi-Crushis ship their sand to Saudi Arabia primarily for use in the oil and gas industry.

Yo, go read about the law of conservation of energy, with or without the solar panels, the energy still there. I suggest you to go there and see for it yourself. You don't need visa to go to China nowadays.

Deceptive title. To make a very long China-praising story short (and lets not forget it is not a democracy, so moving even millions of people and resources around is a lot easier than in a democracy), still not clear if they really REMOVED billions of tons of sand FROM the dessert as the title suggests. And if so, to where?. Another thing is moving it around as became sort of clear when you mentioned the sand was bulldozered to the in-between valleys or depresions in the same dessert.

Why does this feel like Chinese propaganda talking about how green they are and failing to mention how they do most of the worlds pollution. Not to mention how they keep expanding how much they are polluting.

Over this past decade-or-so, I've contemplated the necessity of deserts. We haven't figured-out why yet, but the operative word is there ...'yet'. I keep thinking we will do ourselves in (......again) by cutting deserts out. I doubt there is a healthy planet out there that doesn't have desert spots.

Isn't it interesting. We are constantly being told that the beaches are running out of sand and they are now mining the seabed and disturbing the marine ecosystem to get it. The sand could just be shipped from these deserts which now conveniently have good roads and railways running through them.

What is not addressed is ...what happened when solar panels break down and how are they disposed of at the end which is a problem people fail to talk about.

Cherno4625
I would be more impressed if China would build a large saltwater piping system, building the desalinization plants, using the leftover salts to build salt water batteries. The water can be used to reclaim the deserts by using not only trees but to plant other types of plants that animals and insects would thrive. This builds a multiculture, enriching the lands naturally, making it to where China can grow enough food for themselves.
This is all basic science, though most governments refuse to think outside the box - Maybe China can figure this out?
