They think I will be taken as a prisoner for negotiation and keep repeating that China is a police state and does not need a reason to jail me. I live in Qingdao part time and they have a very cool outdoor "beer exchange" which is based off a stock exchange. The prices vary every few minutes based on the popularity of the beer and there are money on draft. It's just like buying a stock. You scan your phone, Pick a beer and it automatically comes out. You can walk around with the beer. Chinese normally don't get drunk and disorderly unlike beer places in other countries.

When I traveled to China, I was warned not to take photos of government buildings. I remember walking past a TV broadcasting studio with warning signs saying “No Photography.”
I will add that as an American, I was walking solo through some pretty out of the way parts of Chengdu and I felt safer than I do in parts of my own city in California. I worst I got was a couple of stares but I imagine it was because not many white people walked through that neighborhood. Not once did I ever feel unsafe.

You triggered one memory, but not from China, it was actually from San Diego airport. I remember I was taking last flight that evening, so the airport was already pretty empty. Just people waiting next to the gate. I also remember that the terminal was V shaped and I think there were A and B gates, or something like this. Since there was still like one hour or so till boarding, i decided to walk around the entire terminal. And then at some point one of the security guys started screaming at me, sth like "what are you doing here!!! go to your gate!!!". and I was like "fine! but isn't it public area? there are no signs saying, don't enter, etc." Then the guy became very agitated and started threatening me with arrest.

I live in Qingdao part time and they have a very cool outdoor "beer exchange" which is based off a stock exchange. The prices vary every few minutes based on the popularity of the beer and there are money on draft. It's just like buying a stock. You scan your phone, Pick a beer and it automatically comes out. You can walk around with the beer. Chinese normally don't get drunk and disorderly unlike beer places in other countries.

When I traveled to China, I was warned not to take photos of government buildings. I remember walking past a TV broadcasting studio with warning signs saying “No Photography.”
I will add that as an American, I was walking solo through some pretty out of the way parts of Chengdu and I felt safer than I do in parts of my own city in California. I worst I got was a couple of stares but I imagine it was because not many white people walked through that neighborhood. Not once did I ever feel unsafe.

You triggered one memory, but not from China, it was actually from San Diego airport. I remember I was taking last flight that evening, so the airport was already pretty empty. Just people waiting next to the gate. I also remember that the terminal was V shaped and I think there were A and B gates, or something like this. Since there was still like one hour or so till boarding, i decided to walk around the entire terminal. And then at some point one of the security guys started screaming at me, sth like "what are you doing here!!! go to your gate!!!". and I was like "fine! but isn't it public area? there are no signs saying, don't enter, etc." Then the guy became very agitated and started threatening me with arrest.
