As a teacher in stem field myself, I admire professor Jiang’s ability to construct a highly engaging narrative of almost any topic he chooses. However, there is a Chinese saying, if one believes everything one reads in a book, one is better off not reading that book. His teaching style is very linear and causal, a leading to b, b leading to c, therefore very easy to follow. Reality is however nonlinear and multifactorial. Above all, reality is an emerging phenomenon of probabilistic nature. It is satisfying to find an explanation on things for our brain than facing the uncertainty. The point I want to make is let us thank professor Jiang for the exposure of these important topics, but let us all be diligent students, which is to read and most importantly think for yourself. I think professor Jiang would agree with me on this point.

Small correction here professor. Martyrdom as a noble cause is actually a common theme across all sects of Islam, not just Shia. What makes it so central to Shia identity specifically goes back to the succession crisis after the Prophet Muhammad's death in 632 CE. One camp backed Abu Bakr, the Prophet's closest companion, as leader. The other believed leadership should stay within the Prophet's family — with Ali, his cousin and son-in-law, at the helm. The followers of Ali became known as Shiat Ali, the party of Ali.
Ali eventually became the fourth caliph but was assassinated in 661 CE. Then in 680 CE things came to a head at Karbala. Ali's son Husayn refused to pledge loyalty to the Umayyad caliph Yazid, who he saw as a corrupt and illegitimate ruler. He marched with a small group of family and companions and was met by a massive Umayyad army. They were surrounded and slaughtered on a day now known as Ashura. For Shia Muslims, Karbala was the ultimate act of standing up to injustice, even at the cost of your life. That's why martyrdom hits different in Shia theology.

As a teacher in stem field myself, I admire professor Jiang’s ability to construct a highly engaging narrative of almost any topic he chooses. However, there is a Chinese saying, if one believes everything one reads in a book, one is better off not reading that book. His teaching style is very linear and causal, a leading to b, b leading to c, therefore very easy to follow. Reality is however nonlinear and multifactorial. Above all, reality is an emerging phenomenon of probabilistic nature. It is satisfying to find an explanation on things for our brain than facing the uncertainty. The point I want to make is let us thank professor Jiang for the exposure of these important topics, but let us all be diligent students, which is to read and most importantly think for yourself. I think professor Jiang would agree with me on this point.

Small correction here professor. Martyrdom as a noble cause is actually a common theme across all sects of Islam, not just Shia. What makes it so central to Shia identity specifically goes back to the succession crisis after the Prophet Muhammad's death in 632 CE. One camp backed Abu Bakr, the Prophet's closest companion, as leader. The other believed leadership should stay within the Prophet's family — with Ali, his cousin and son-in-law, at the helm. The followers of Ali became known as Shiat Ali, the party of Ali.
Ali eventually became the fourth caliph but was assassinated in 661 CE. Then in 680 CE things came to a head at Karbala. Ali's son Husayn refused to pledge loyalty to the Umayyad caliph Yazid, who he saw as a corrupt and illegitimate ruler. He marched with a small group of family and companions and was met by a massive Umayyad army. They were surrounded and slaughtered on a day now known as Ashura. For Shia Muslims, Karbala was the ultimate act of standing up to injustice, even at the cost of your life. That's why martyrdom hits different in Shia theology.
